Although some parts of this movie are slightly corny, over all this movie is wonderful. It is original, sweet, even creepy at times; this is an amazing movie that no one should miss.
Plot was too simplistic with a typical theme behind it. It was quite visually stunning, although I can imagine if I were a child watching this I would have nightmares. Not suitable for kids, but maybe artsy adults who appreciate these kind of dark visuals.
Well as expected, this film looked absolutely fantastic, a visual feast no less, with the imagery looking just like one of McKean's Sandman covers in motion. Alas, it was all fancy wallpaper slopped over a very thin weedy story, most surprising for Neil Gaiman.
I really wanted to love this film, hoping that it would have been the 'new' Labyrinth, especially with Jim Henson's Creature shop on board, but I have to confess about three quarters of the way through I became bored. After it had finished, I watched it again with the McKean and Gaiman commentary on, which I found a lot more interesting.
It would have worked wonderfully as a short, but even as a not-too-lengthy 101 mins it felt like Mckean had played around with Photoshop and then realised he'd better draft in his mate to work a story into it. A real shame, here's hoping he can make magic with his next film.
It lacked the wonderment I was searching for. Instead of going for the heart, this tried too hard to stimulate my brain. I expected a lot more. Not a terrible movie, but it should not even be used in the same sentence with Labyrinth and Dark Crystal.
Historia sencilla pero efectiva, ademas de ser visualmente de lo mejor que ha habido y por lo mismo diferente a cualquier otra pelicula. Dave McKean y Neil Gaiman no decepcionan jamas.
Mirrormask Has To Be One Of THE BEST Fantasy Movies I've Ever Seen! The Images Are Outstanding! The Acting Is Great! Man...I Hope There's Going To Be A Sequel!
Interesting characters, intriguing setting. My big compaint was that the pacing seemed very uneven. I was half way through the movie before there was a sense of urgency.
excelent story
this alice through the mirror story is so beautiful and full of great creatures
the movie made me cry and smil at the same time...
I totally recommend it!
The fragmented comic-book art of Dave Mckean comes to life in MirrorMask, a simple fantasy tale of a inverted world, and girl on a quest.
The plot is kinda standard with some fantastical twists from screen writer Niel Gaiman(Beawolf, Stardust, The Sandman(comics), which kinda defy description floating collosul golumns, penguine apes with wings, spynx like alley cats who eat books, flying towers, etc. What's really unique about this film is how the heavily augmented digital effects actual make the film feel like a dream(not in a david lynch, Jacob's Ladder way), but like an actual hazzy, fleeting, disconnected way(closer to "Waking Life" and "Alice In Wonderland"). If you like all encompasing visual spectacle and don't mind a simplistic childrens film plot, it's well worth the time. Dave Mckean is a mulit-media master whose singular style translates very well visually, and more than anything else, makes the movie worth seeing.
A very nice magical-realism piece by Gaiman and McKean. The visual art is quite impressive and atmospheric, and the story is appropriate, though a bit conventional. The weaving of visuals, music, plot are perhaps not spot-on in all places, but on the whole I found it a very enjoyable and impressive film.
I think that Dave McKean's artwork looks better in 2 Dimensions. Otherwise this is a very good albeit scary-looking children's movie. It loses points because the story seems to go off track and get away from Gaiman, but the characters are engaging and grounded just enough to keep you with them. Flawed, but not without merit.
This was a difficult movie to watch and get into. The basis for the story is solid and similar in many ways to Pan's Labyrinth...however the quality and experience are very different. MirrorMask digs a lot deeper into the imaginary world. The graphics leave a lot to be desired. The computer animation makes this movie look like a high school computer project. Whatever the goal was, it comes off looking bad. The music is horrible. It manages to distract way too much. The acting by the young girl is solid, but nearly good enough to make up for the rest of this. I would advise against this unless you are looking for something extremely different.
I liked this movie ,very bizarre and still a good fantasy.A really fantastic dreamworld.
As far as acting I did not recognize the people in the movie but thought the young girl did a great job.
From the mind of Neil Gaiman comes the most revolutionary film in the fantasy genre, since Walter Murch's "Return to Oz". The brilliant dual craftsmanship of writer Neil Gaiman and director Dave McKean results in an uncanny visual journey.
Dave McKean's directing debut (the story/script co-written with Neil Gaiman) proves that this revolutionary artist is definitely ready to make the jump to moving pictures. This is one of the most visually unique movies in years.
This is primarily a children's story, but the art probably appeals more to a trained art critic's eye than a kid's as most of it is extremely surreal and slightly dark, even for fantasy. I cannot wait until McKean does a much thematically heavier and loaded storyline that will allow him to do anything, especially if it is creepy, scary, or otherwise visually distressing like some of his graphic novel work. Maybe a Batman movie, or fingers crossed though it'll never happen, a story set in The Sandman universe, written by Gaiman.
Dave Mckean and Neil Gaiman create one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen. I loved every minute of it. If anyone is capable of creating fantasy on the same level as Henson it's going to be Gaiman and Mckean.
Pure eye candy, I was in a diabetic coma, the story was a bit simple but the side by side storytelling was great. Also I am showing it to Ave because bad girls do not kiss boys. You will only get it, if you've seen it.
