After series of unfortunate events for colonel Hanks and adorable Leticia, the two caracters collide somehow at the most difficult time of their lives.
The connection remains hidden for Leticia, not knowing she was falling for the person who did actually put her husband on the electric chair.
The final scene is intense and mesmerising, and she could somehow hide the anger and the hysteria, by not confronting the situation.
Couldn't watch the all so called "WOAAH sex scene" because the dvd was sensored :S -
Two stars just for Halle Berry's boobs and P Diddy getting executed. The rest is corny tv melodrama.

i really liked this movie!
it is very powerful and made me cry a bit!
i thought the story line was a bit slow other an that amazing, and the acting was superb!
would totally recogmend it! -
Regret , it is the first word popped out in my head when the credit was playing . Damn! The story just way too short and a bit' blurred also it's emotional but 'weak' . The climax emotion just cut off suddenly when it has just begun to explode .But , 2 thumbs up for Halle Berry's work , she worked hard for this character and i can see it . Sean Combs a.k.a. P Diddy a.k.a. Puff Daddy just so-so but he can't be replaced by someone lower than him . Billy Bob Thronton and Heath Ledger are in the same level in this movie , they weren't 'whoaa' enough . The directing just a lil' bit annoying because of the scenes selection , there were some useless not so pretty scenes showed up and that scenes made the movie longer and made it to be a lullaby.

Monsters Ball is a story of forbidden love and how quickly life can change in an instant. Monsters Ball tells the story of Hank, his son Sonny and his racist father Buck. When Hank and Sonny are set to execute a man with the electric chair, Sonny throws up and it sparks his fathers rage saying that Sonny ruined the mans last walk. After this begin to unravel for Hank and Sonny, and despite his father wishes Hank actually begins to fall in love with a black girl.
Billy Bob Thornton does not shine. He is average at best and luckily for him there are people around him that can steal the show. Billy does a good job of developing the character into someone different but that is where the role stops for him. Billy doesnt seem to be giving it his all, yet the people around him are pulling off some awesome roles.
Wow is all that can be said About the performance of Halle Berry. She completely earns the oscar with her accurate depiction of sex. The most accurate depiction to be seen to date. Great job, and she keeps it going through out and portrays her charcater with such energy and passion that it at some points makes this film hard to watch. Halle is so good that she almost makes this film seem as though it is a depiction of a real life person and that it is no longer a movie but a documentary where cameras are following her character around. A great single performance and it really is underrated.
Heath Ledger has the second best peformance in the film. He is not in the film for a long time, but his scenes are moving and powerful. He spook his lines with such passion and fury that I almost wanted to break down and cry. He delivered his words with so much emotion and sadness that it sent a chill down my spine when I watched this performance. Heath Ledger is a brilliant actor and his performances will live on for many years to come.
Peter Boyles performance was brilliant. He acted to the best of his ability. He has done many works, but probably none as accurate and heart wrenching as this one. He played a dieing elderly man not willing to change his racist ways even after it destroyed his family and took away his grandson. Peter Boyle is awesome, he plays his characters with such belief and enthusiam.
Monsters Ball is heart wrenching, it plays on morals and beliefs, and the idea of a families being driven apart simply because they have a different way of viewing a situation then the rest of there family. Monsters Ball is unique, its slow paced, its awesome, it delivers its point, so much so that by the end of the film you will be left in tears. Monsters Ball is probably one of the best acted films that I have watched.
The story Devlops like our lives do, noone ever knows what is going to happen next, all we can is hope we have taken the right steps to help make for a better future.Monsters Ball is a good film and is not meant for everyone, only watch it if you are looking for a film with a strong message and a good story and some wonderful acting, -
A series of (perhaps overly contrived) tragic events bring together an ex-corrections officer and the widow of a man he had a hand in executing in a thoughtful and well-written drama of finding redemption in breaking with the destructive influences of the past. Billy Bob Thornton gives a typically sturdy performance complimented by oscar winner Halle Berry, but it is Peter Boyle's decrepit yet still belligerently obnoxious patriarch that is the scene stealer. Actually, my main gripe lies in the casting of Berry, because as good as she is, and as crucial to the story the infamous sex scene is, having such a strikingly attractive woman involved can only lead to titillation; as a result the scene feels rather like high end porn. The script also reminded me of Crash in that although well written and thoughtful, it all seemed a little too convenient and all the events leading up to the couple's relationship just felt like the means to an end rather than a believable story. Having said that, it's a sensitively told tale that is nowhere near as depressing as it sounds. That and you get to see Sean "Puffy"/"Puff Daddy"/"P. Diddy"/"talentless twatbag" Combs deep-fried into the bargain. Back of the net!

Heath Ledger is once again wonderful in a prophetic role of his manic depression and sudden, early death.

This film made me notice Heath Ledger. I'll really miss him. Lost a great one. The film itself has a great cast with alot of good moments.
-
The way I see it this is just another "it's hard to be black"-movie. I was extremely disappointed...
-
We all know that Billy Bob is a great actor. What is surprising is that Halle Berry rises to the occasion of matching him. If only she took good scripts more often....

An epic tale of racism, suicide, and the power to overcome those factors. Billy Bob Thorton shows a pretty good role (even though he barely says anything) Heath Ledger does a great job too. But the most astounding performance I've seen in almost all my years of movie watching, was Halle Berry. Who won the Oscar (And she didn't earn it because of the nudity or the 5 minute sex scene).
Beautiful cinematography, and great directing by Foster. -
Halle Berry and Billy Bob WOW!!! So rednecks get all the cutie ladies. It was a good movie but I think it will only be remember for Hallie's sex scene. Did everybody miss the fact that father and son were sharing a hooker.
-
A harsh look at deep south racism yet pulls unlikely twist when lead characters together played realistically by both Halle Berry and Billy Bob Thornton become involved through circumstances very much IN their control. Berry deservedly has been recognized with Oscar but Thornton is just as stellar playing a character who changes his tune for the better in an untraditional fashion way.

Since the tragic death of Heath Ledger I felt it important to see all of his films. The more I see the more I realise that he really was a terrific actor and it was an awful loss. His role in this film is small and he isn't in a lot of the scenes but his talent is quite clearly shown. I wasn't quite sure about Sean Combs' character either. Lets face it he cannot sing and I was thinking he's not going to be able to pull this character off, but he was actually very good. He should quit the singing and do some more acting. About 20 minutes into the film there is a huge shock which I won't mention but it's so huge that my mouth was gaping open for quite a while after. Billy Bob Thornton gives a powerful performance but god is he an asshole. You see his character develop lots during the film. He goes from being a product of his father played by Peter Boyle, who I love as an actor but I cannot stand his character in this film. He is a racist, a masoginist and a biggot. As the film goes on Thornton's character finally realises just how out of line his father is and just how similar he and his father are. I've never been a fan of Halle Berry but I have to say she was excellent in this film. I think this is probably the best example of her acting ability more than any other film. This film is also titled as one of the most overrated films ever and I completely disagree. I find it hard to comprehend the idea of the characters not being convincing. Really great film that is definatly a must see film.

Halle Berry and Billy Bob Thornton play two people that are drawn together by tragedy and grief. They find solace and comfort in each other. Halle Berry got the Oscar award for Best Actress in a leading role. It sure broke grounds for black actresses!!!!
The real story here is the strife and pain racism causes and how it destroys lives.
Why anyone will want to look down on another human being is beyond my comprehension. This is 2008 people, not 1672!!!
Wake up and give people a chance to be successful and be somebody. -
A bit weird... touted at Blockbuster as a Heath Ledger flick.. but he dies w/in the frst 20mins of movie.

MONSTER'S BALL (2001)
directed by Marc Forster
starring Billy Bob Thornton, Halle Berry, Heath LedgerMonster's Ball is trying to deal with many themes, racism among them and grief. Its about a black woman who loses her child and a man who sees his own son shoot himself, they both begin an understanding relationship and slowly, it becomes more. This film is shot in a very realistic way by director Marc Forster, and sometimes even too realistic, bringing some complaints from lots of people, especially about the graphic sex scene between the two protagonists. Of course that scene is very useful to show how vulnerable the characters are and to keep the movie in the same tone as it was from the beginning but its also understandable why people complained about it.
Mosnter's Ball is disturbing and the characters are even more disturbed by their lives. Its a good shot at reality, not sure how accurate it is about the Southern lives, but its quite accurate on the human level.
Halle Berry got lucky, she gives a powerful performance, but the only one of her career, just had good material to deal with and Marc Forster directed her good. Billy Bob Thornton gives a sober performance, almost emotionless and he is quite effective as well. Heath Ledger showed a glimpse of the talent he had and later proved in Brokeback Mountain.
Its highly emotional and it goes deeply into the human soul making this film hard to watch more than once. Far from entertaining, but still a good movie, but not for everyone.

Heath Ledger demonstrates how much his talents will be missed here in an exceptional supporting performance as an unlikely copy of his stern father, a unwavering law enforcer in a corrections facility for lost causes awaiting the electric chair. This is the first movie that drew my attention to Halle Berry's performance, other than being stage dressing in soft pornography she succumbs to the charms of the racist bigot who watched her criminal husband fry .
-
Outstanding performance by Heath Ledger. Personally, I think, his character made the movie. He just takes you on this emotional rollercoaster ride that leaves you wanting to jump in and give his character one big hug. The movie as a whole is very dramatic and real in a sense. that being said, the excessive use of pornographic scenes put me off... seriously, it was too much. 3 stars for Mr. Ledger

Simply hypnotic.
Milo Addica's ability to create minimalistic screenplays ("Birth", "Monster's Ball", "The King") allows Halle Berry, Billy Bob Thornton, Heath Ledger, Peter Boyle and even P. Diddy to showcase their unique talents and wonderful performances.
One of the most haunting ensambles I've ever seen on screen.
It may look like a simple melodrama with a twist (by twist I mean "hardcore sex") but it's absolutely WAY more than that. Don't get fooled by the poster/DVD cover: Halle Berry is everything but glamorous in this, a career defining performance. I still believe in her, specially after seeing this. -
A brilliant and very powerful drama. Halle Berry fully deserved to win an Oscar. Excellent performances all round.
-
What a god awful movie. Ireally don't see what all the fuss is about it. I miss Heath Ledger already though.
-
Some will say itīs boring , others will appreciate only cause Ledger died . To me , I actually neither like Ledger nor Berry nor other movies of em . But in this one , they all acted really impressing and thereīs something magical about this movie .
-
Gripping drama with class performances by Berry, Thornton, and Ledger . But However contemplative the raised issues are, the film is quite short questioning wether it was intentional or if they lost direction to take it further.
