I always have a thing for animated movie.. and Monsters, Inc. is (in my opinion) the greatest of all. The story, the characters and everything are so lovable and just "right". Boo is so cute.. and the friendship between Mike and Sulley is adorable.

Sulley: Mike, this isn't Boo's door.
    Mike: Boo? What's Boo?
Sulley: That's... what I decided to call her. Is there a problem?
Mike: Sulley, you're not supposed to name it. Once you name it, you start getting attached to it. Now put that thing back where it came from or so h...( read more)elp me...
[Mike pauses, realizing that they suddenly have the attention of the entire scare floor]
Mike: Oh, hey. We're rehearsing a - a scene for the upcoming company play called uh, Put That Thing Back Where It Came From Or So Help Me. It's a musical.

The fourth film from Pixar is just as full of originality and imagination as all there other features. Here, the subject of what goes bump in the night is addressed. The animation is very good looking and vibrant with its color. The voice cast is top notch, with great chemistry between John Goodman and Billy Crystal. A quality Randy Newman score. And a truly original idea for its story, complete with all sorts of original creature/monster designs.

Mike: Can I borrow your odorant?
Sulley: Yeah, I got, uh, Smelly Garbage or Old Dumpster.
Mike: You got, uh, Low Tide?
    Sulley: No.
    Mike: How about Wet Dog?
    Sulley: Yep. Stink it up.

What would happen if it turned out that there actually was a monster in your closet? In this film, not only is that the jumping off point for the story, but it actually sets up an entirely different world consisting of a monster society that depends on scaring children at night, in order to collect the screams that they emit as a source of energy. The top scarer for the company, Monster's Inc, is Sully, voiced by Goodman, aided by his best friend Mike, voiced by Crystal.

The catch for the society is that everyone believes kids to be very toxic to their environment, and coming into physical contact with one would destroy them. So of course, a little girl stumbles her way into the society, with Mike and Sully working hard to get her back safely without upsetting things.

The voice cast also includes Steve Buscemi as the villainous Randall, James Coburn, Jennifer Tilly, Frank Oz, and Bonnie Hunt.

The thing I enjoy most about this feature is how it develops its world. Its very much a slapstick comedy, but great effort has been made to have a whole universe set up to really get the viewer involved in the day-to-day of this world. Seeing all the various monsters and settings in this film is quite engaging. There is certainly a standard buddy plot with some adventure thorwn in at its core, but Pixar has a knack for developing quality stories, with well developed lead characters.

The animation was certainly a big leap forward for Pixar from A Bug's Life and the Toy Story films. Here there are numerous elements involving textures of all the monsters, namely the movement of Sully's hair and the effect of his weight, that is noticeable and beneficial to the feel of the film. And the use of all kinds of colors is certainly effective in making this a very vibrant film to look at.

Finally, while the story never really develops into something as engrossing or moving as some of Pixars superior features, the relationship that forms between Sully and the little girl, Boo, certainly brings in a quality emotional bond that resonates.

Randall: Where is it, you little one-eyed cretin?
Mike: Okay, first of all, it's "creetin". If you're going to threaten me, do it properly. Second of all, you're nuts if you think kidnapping ME is going to help YOU cheat your way to the top.
Randall: [chuckles evilly] You still think this is about that stupid scare record?
Mike: Well... I did. Right up until you... chuckled... like that... And now I'm thinking I should just get out of here.

Pixar is back with yet another timeless, unforgettable and unique animated classic masterpiece, aimed for both children and adults. In fact, Shrek (2001), which was released the same year, was the first winner for the inaugural Best Animated Feature Film category of the Ac...( read more)ademy Awards in 2002. Monsters, Inc. was nominated for such category as well along with Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (2001). The reason why this last film was nominated is because there was no other animated film that year, so it received that honor. Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (2001) was not nominated until the following year, deservedly winning the Oscar. Monsters, Inc. was nominated for 4 Academy Awards including Best Animated Feature, Best Music, Original Score, Best Sound Editing and Best Music, Original Song for the song "If I Didn't Have You", winning only the last one. In my opinion, it should have also won for Best Animated Feature since it was better and more clever and creative than Shrek (2001), which mainly relied in crude humor and endless classic fairy tales spoofs.

This is the fourth entry in the Pixar filmography after Toy Story (1995), A Bug's Life (1998) and Toy Story 2 (1999). Monsters, Inc. has an improved animation and a monstrous creativity throughout. The story takes place in Monstropolis (name that came from the mother of sci-fi films, Metropolis (1927)), a city where the energy supply comes from the screaming of children when expressing an emotion. The protagonists, Mike Wazowski, a one-eyed round-shaped green little monster and James P. Sullivan, a big, strong horned monster with more than 2,000,000 hairs, work in the company that is in charge of distributing this energy to Monstropolis, but chaos and fun ensue when a tender little girl called Boo manages to enter the monster world, since children are believed to be deadly.

The film manages a comical concept in a brilliant way. Since most of us go through that typical fobia/fear towards dark and monsters hidden in the closet or under the bed, the irony of the film comes from the fact that monsters are also afraid of children, perhaps even more than children are towards them. The film has an incredible and very detailed visual style and the story is brilliantly original. It effectively mixes science fiction with fantasy, since monsters of all sizes and colors have the ability of traveling to any part of the world thanks to the technology they have created.

The previous Pixar films focused more on the character development and the fun of the situations all of the characters were put in, but this time, whereas the film has less depth and dramatic quality, the amazing new world this film creates with an unbelievable unique and creative style makes up for it. The monsters' design is extremelly well done and very different for each monster, not only creating variety, but also distinguishing both male and female monsters. The humans' design, being most of them practically children and young teens, improved a lot over the past years, which definitely got worse in Finding Nemo (2003) and The Incredibles (2004).

This film also has one of the cuttest and most tender characters Pixar has ever created along with Nemo and WALL·E. Boo (whose real name is actually Mary) adds a lot of laughs and heartwarming moments to the film. It is a magical and very pure character, and the most amazing and wonderful thing about her is that she ends up defeating her own fear towards the monster that was assigned to her, who is the antagonist Randall.

Monsters, Inc. is another successful entry to the wonderful Pixar series so far. It is very underrated in my opinion. It is definitely not their best work, but it is not the worse either. Worth watching for any kind of audience, since even adults are assured to have a couple of good laughs, since this brilliant piece of animation has also the same characteristic of past films which is the mix of different types of humor for all ages.

FUN STUFF: Did you know that this film references some past Pixar short projects, such as Luxo Jr. (1986) and Red's Dream (1987)? It also references previous Pixar feature films such as Toy Story (1995), Toy Story 2 (1999) and a film which hadn't been released yet, Finding Nemo (2003)! The famous Luxo ball, a Jesse doll, a Nemo toy, a Pizza Planet Truck and the trailer from A Bug's Life (1998) are featured here. Can you find the number A-113?

    84/100

John Goodman and Billy Crystal, where can you go wrong with that, humour for any age and with a sweet story and continous gagas to keep it flowing makes it a brilliant computer animated film.
