Monty Python's Life of Brian

Graham Chapman, Michael Palin, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle

Brian is born in a stable on Christmas, right next to You Know Who. The wise men appear and begin to distribute gifts. The star moves further, so they take it all back and move on. This is how Brian...( read more  read more... )'s life goes. The Jews are looking for a release from the Romans, Spiritual and political decay, keep looking for signs and a group decides Brian is the Messiah. He cannot convince them he is not. He joins the Peoples' Front of Judea, one of several dozen separatist groups who actually do nothing, but really hate the Romans. While not about Jesus, it is about those who hadn't time, or interest to listen to his message. Many Political and Social comments.

I'm sure I'm about to make a lot of enemies here, but I just didn't find this film all that funny. Sure it had its moments -- the stoning scene, the crucifixion scene where everyone is whistling while Eric Idle sings "Always Look on the Bright Side". But I don't think it lives up...( read more) to Python's reputation. Maybe the problem for me is the whole premise of the story. Satirizing something that seems so ridiculous to begin with seems redundant, and a bit dated to be honest. Many MANY efforts, both fictional and non-fiction, have been made since Life of Brian was released to show how stupid (and sometimes dangerous) it is to follow someone based on scant evidence of their credentials. Maybe if I had seen this years ago when I wasn't so jaded, I may have found it funnier. But now all I can say is "good try."

I love this film so much, it's absolutely hilarious. Best not watch it with a bible basher though, as I mistakenly have done in the past. It can get very awkward!

The best film of the ineffable Monty Python troupe. It does for religion what Dr. Strangelove did for politics.

    An apostasy of biblical proportions.

THIS is on the IMDb Top 250 list?! If I offend anyone, excuse me. But I thought most of - no, scrap that - all of the jokes were so bad I actually wanted to cry. Even John Cleese, who, we all agree, can be a comedic genius, has nothing witty to say. I feel sorry for the guy that ...( read more)was cast in the pitiful role of Brian's mother. You poor sod.

Each joke (or attempt at one) is repeated about four times. There's only so many times 'People's Front of Judea' (or Judean People's Front; whatever) or 'Biggus Dickus' can be funny (none, in my case). I like my satire subtle, not thrown into my face.

As much as I try, there is absolutely nothing good to say. The longest 90 minutes of my life. I wonder why I sat through all of them? The world is a funny place.

Monty Python's best movie. Graham Chapman's performance is legendary. A singular storyline and a serious subject make for the perfect farce. Contrary to popular belief, it does not once make fun of Jesus.
