Monty Python's Life of Brian Reviews and Ratings

  • November 5, 2009
I'm sure I'm about to make a lot of enemies here, but I just didn't find this film all that funny. Sure it had its moments -- the stoning scene, the crucifixion scene where everyone is whistling while Eric Idle sings "Always Look on the Bright Side". But I don't think it lives up...( read more) to Python's reputation. Maybe the problem for me is the whole premise of the story. Satirizing something that seems so ridiculous to begin with seems redundant, and a bit dated to be honest. Many MANY efforts, both fictional and non-fiction, have been made since Life of Brian was released to show how stupid (and sometimes dangerous) it is to follow someone based on scant evidence of their credentials. Maybe if I had seen this years ago when I wasn't so jaded, I may have found it funnier. But now all I can say is "good try."

It was pretty funny, but somehow I prefer Holy Grail.

Monty Python's best movie. Graham Chapman's performance is legendary. A singular storyline and a serious subject make for the perfect farce. Contrary to popular belief, it does not once make fun of Jesus.

A star moves and three wise men approach a vi...( read more)llage. They come bearing gifts for the one who will become the future Messiah. If only there were numbers on the stables that way the wise men wouldn't have entered the wrong one. Instead of Jesus, they meet baby Brian. Born a Jew and later discovered in adulthood to be a Roman instead. His mother was, at first, raped by a Roman and I assume wanted it to continue. The Roman was Naughtius Maximus not Biggus Dickus or Pontius Pilate.

Judith is apart of the Peoples Front of Judea and Brian loves her and hates the Roman's even though he is one. So he decides to join. Their plans to kidnap Pilate's wife turns out to be a failure when another group with the same plan wants to kidnap her as well. Both groups fight and Brian is the last man standing, captured and brought to Pontius Pilate.

When the guards are stuck laughing at Pilate's speech impediment, Brian escapes. He hides alongside a group of crap prophets and tries to dispense his own prophecy which gets a lot of attention. The people begin to look to him and decide that he's the messiah. Even Judith is willing to sleep with him on account of this revelation which really baffles Brian.

When Brian is captured by the Roman's he's scheduled to be crucified. Hung up on the cross, along with many other basterds, he and everybody break out into a song to lift their spirits up. You can always look at the bright side of life because just think they might've been stoned to death and that's just wrong. Being crucified though is much better because you're out in the open air with other people. You can even get a tan and catch up on your times tables. 2x2=4, 2x3=6....

probably the best comedy of all times. witty, obscene, political, atheist, and incurably optimistic satire that cracks you up every single time. arguably, the best work by the Monty Pythons ever!
  • October 18, 2009
I just can't like those Monty Python period movies, just not my style
  • October 14, 2009
    More hilalarious scenes
  • October 11, 2009
I don't know how you can't like this film, comedy at its best.
  • September 19, 2009
Irreverent and acid, I've never felt so heretic in my whole life. It was so worth it.
  • September 18, 2009
Life of Brian is another crazy Monty Python film with the same crude and dark humor and unbelievable creative situations dealing with famous and controversial topics. However, this comes to be somewhat insulting at times from my religious point of view. Although it is meant to be...( read more) taken as a comedy, it fails on that point. Overall, it is a good, still distinguishable and hyperactive crazy flick.

    83/100

I love this film so much, it's absolutely hilarious. Best not watch it with a bible basher though, as I mistakenly have done in the past. It can get very awkward!
  • September 13, 2009
Je ne suis pas un grand fan des longs métrages des Monty Python... mais là, je m'incline!!!
  • September 10, 2009
If you love comedy and haven't yet experienced a Monty Python's Life of Brian movie, you're missing out.
A beautiful film, a perfect comedy
  • September 8, 2009
Obviously, is nothing compared to the Holy Grail. a funny film, though
  • September 5, 2009
Apesar de tratar de judeus e romanos, traz ironias incrivelmente fodas que podemos relacionar com os dias atuais. É a humanidade caricaturada.
  • September 3, 2009
Funnier than 'The Holy Grail', and with a bigger budget, 'Monty Python's Life of Brian' is a generally better movie.
  • September 2, 2009
    the funniest film bar none
  • August 30, 2009
    I love this movie..A Classic..must see!
  • August 28, 2009
Maybe the best Monty Python movie. There are a lot of very funny and memorable scenes.
  • August 18, 2009
one of the best films EVER. hilarious! :D
  • August 17, 2009
Funny, and not as offensive as people make it out to be.
  • August 15, 2009
It was funny, but at times the jokes were repetitive and sad to say, uninteresting. It didn't have that same quirky charm as Holy Grail, but it still is quotable.
  • August 14, 2009
One of my absolute all time favorites. Love the Monty Python gang.
  • August 11, 2009
i ddidnt finish but it was acutaly funny the parts i understood anyways
  • August 10, 2009
Satire of the religious impulse, political correctness and anything else comedy giants the Pythons can think of. Fearlessly dazzling everyone by their effrontery, and preeminently clever humor, abundant in now celebrated set-pieces, putting biblical times into modern context.
  • August 5, 2009
    Really funny. Bloody Romans!
  • August 2, 2009
one of the most politically incorrect comedies in history, life of brian once again delves into the nuttiness which makes monty python so very funny.
  • July 31, 2009
Best Monty Python movie ever! A nice approach on the riddiculous and absurd points in the "3 big religions" - and a nice parody of all those tendencies of new messiahs in the Roman days...
  • July 29, 2009
I love it, it's just too funny. I'd say it is a close 2nd to my favourite Monty Python movies (the first being the Holy Grail, of course.)
  • July 25, 2009
I dont know why I keep watching these movies. They really just arent my kind of humor. I dont find them very funny. Honestly I was rather bored with this whole movie until the last scene. I think this will be the last Monty Python I watch. Sorry to all those who love them, I gues...( read more)s I just have different tastes.
  • July 23, 2009
An extremely funny movie with as many classic quotes to rival Star Wars. Religion is funny and the Monty Python crew don't hold back here. You will not be disappointed here, unless you are really easily offended!
  • July 18, 2009
    hahaha sum damn funny shit
  • July 17, 2009
Still the funniest movie after all this time
  • July 13, 2009
Controversial, misunderstood in all sorts of ways and viewpoints, and funnier than an unexpected dip in a duck pond.
  • July 7, 2009
A controversial and brilliant comedy that pissed of christians around the globe. Excellent.
  • July 4, 2009
A bigger budget and a hell of a lot better than their first Holy Grail. The Insane wacky humour hasn't been lost in this brilliant follow up. A piss take to Jesus himself about a guy mistaken to the real messiah. Great one-liners and performances from the cast playing different c...( read more)haracters, it's hard NOT to like this awesome film.
  • June 30, 2009

  • June 28, 2009
hes not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy!
  • June 27, 2009
Pretty average....Definitely not worth the rave reviews it has gotten!! I liked Monty Python and the Holy Grail better...This one has a much better ending than MP&THG though!!
  • June 25, 2009
    I watch it every Christmas....
  • June 23, 2009
If you want blasphemy with humor, you can't beat it. But if you spent any time with activists, revolutionaries, and feminists, you'd totally understand how funny this is.
  • June 22, 2009
loved this since I was 16, still do. for sure a stoner movie
