Nonetheless, before he can spend his retirement with his family, he needs a successor, who he believes to have found in his loyal right hand Nick (Daniel Wu). Nick is already in the business for several years and most importantly is smarter than any of the rest of Kwan's gang. Still, what the drug lord doesn't know is that Nick is actually an undercover cop, who tries for years already to get some clues about the masterminds behind the drug cartel. Until now, Kwan has been exceptionally careful and so every hand knows only what it has to know about the other. However, as Nick is becoming Kwan's successor he finally is introduced to the mechanisms and secrets of the business. At the same time Nick also has to see with his own eyes what impact drugs can have on an individual. He tries to help his drug-addicted neighbor Jane (Zhang Jingchu), a young mother, and her little daughter to cope with life, yet Nick now has to focus on Kwan as the game enters the final stage. Still, will Nick actually be able to put his long-time friend Kwan behind bars when he has to?

An incredibly well made thriller in the vein of Infernal Affairs. This isn't the average cop thriller though, it's a commentary on drugs and the drug world. The film details the farming, the selling and the addiction. Unlike many films though it keeps the story centralised to two...( read more) main characters. It also uses the ingenious plot device of a man training his protege. This makes it acceptable for the exposition as we tour from the inner cities of Hong Kong to the wilds of Thailand. The film also has some incredible moments such as the bungled raid scene. It's funny, dramatic, tense and has VERY unexpected moments. The films only drawback is that it is very heavy handed. The messages are spelled out clearly and sometimes come a bit close to Reefer Madness forehead slapping absurdity. Luckily the performances pull everything together as does the movies final surprising question. It tells us that drugs are bad, but perhaps the emptiness that drugs fill is worse.

Final scene blew an otherwise 5-star effort. Best non-triad HK film in years. Clumsy art but ultimately accessible. Anyway I just wanna say that I hate this new trend of casting non-native Cantonese speakers.

Graphic, well acted film about the heroin trade in the legendary golden triangle from the poppy fields to the junkies doing anything they can for a hit and the businessmen and cops in between. Excellent work from all involved.

Very solid film with great performances and a solid story. I'm a sucker for undercover cop films and this one is right up there with the best. Despite having a pretty lousy final shot (which isn't horrible, it just doesn't fit in with a film of this calibre) this is an excelle...( read more)nt film.

A believable depiction of the heroin world and the darker side of Hong Kong. I've always thought of Andy Lau as the Tom Cruise of HK movies, and he proves to be a better gray-haired "villain" than Cruise in Collateral. It's like Traffic, or Layercake sans glamor, but also stands ...( read more)on its own.

It is a very good story about how drug dealers do not care about their victims and how the drugs destroy peoples' lives. Very sad in many ways and very similar in many ways to the Infernal Affairs trilogy with some of the same players.
