Mr. 3000

Bernie Mac, Angela Bassett, Michael Rispoli, Brian J. White, Ian Anthony Dale

Bernie Mac is perfectly cast in Mr. 3000, a feel-good baseball comedy that capitalizes on Mac's established comedy persona. He plays Stan Ross, veteran first-baseman for the struggling Milwauke...( read more  read more... )e Brewers, who quit the team during a pennant race and, nine years later, discovers that he's actually three hits short of his 3,000 career-hit claim to fame. When he attempts a comeback to correct his record, his selfish past returns to haunt him, along with a former flame (Angela Bassett, who deserves better roles) who's covering Stan's return to baseball for ESPN. It's strictly formula, but the comedy is consistently entertaining, and director Charles Stone III proves that his 2002 sleeper hit Drumline was no fluke, injecting observant details into a very predictable plotline. Easily recommended, Mr. 3000 makes a good double-header with 1989's hit baseball comedy Major League. --Jeff Shannon

Big Horse Borelli: You know, a lot of people said that Stan only looked out for himself, that he wasn't a team player. But I'm here to tell you, if you get 3000 hits, you don't have to be a team player. If you have a lifetime .314 average, you don't have to be a good guy. If you ...( read more)lead the league in batting for three years, you can be the biggest jerk in the world!

Bernie Mac stars as a baseball player who quit the game after getting his 3000th hit. Problem is, years later, when up for a spot in the hall of fame, it is learned that he is in fact 3 hits shy of 3000. Now, to keep his title as Mr. 3000, he has to get back in the game, despite his past ego making him unlikable.

The movie itself is somewhat formulaic, with an ok enough way of playing itself out, but Bernie Mac is enough of a good presence to make this movie enjoyable.

Tom Arnold: Hey, we're sorry about all that stuff we said before you hit that homer...
Stan: Yeah, you wouldn't be anywhere if it wasn't for Roseanne.

I really can NOT stand Bernie Mac. He really annoys me. I liked the movie concept, but it just wasn't done right.

Interesting premise leads to a disappointingly typical sports comedy.
