I was laughing at how silly this movie was! This isn't a family film at all. I will say the kids are gonna dig the hell out of this. The adults are gonna hate it. Dustin Hoffman plays his character well. Natalie Portman - not so good. Jaon Bateman was decent. The story was crap. ...( read more)A toy store that is a living thing and turns black when it's unhappy. That's pure dumb! Some of the stuff is so stupid that you just start to hate this movie. Living toys - if they were trying to make another Toy Story, they weren't even half as close to how good Toy Story was. Overall, there are some good elements, but it's still only for kids.

i watched this film with my family for family movie night fully expecting not to like it, i was pleasantly suprised. its been widely panned, but this is one of those rare occasions that i just dont think critics are opening their minds enough to see the wonderment and creativity...( read more) offered by a film like this. maybe if more critics watched this film in their living rooms with little kids they would get it. its a delightful film that actually works on many levels, where being silly for the sake of silly made sense rather than annoyed. im glad my kids made me watch it and i know i will revisit this film at some point.

Jason Bateman gets around inthe movies doean't he??!! I wouldn't mind seeing a movie where he finally takes the lead!

Its a great cast, well acted and a great story for the family to watch! Although, theres probably a million things wrong with this movie, i still loved it!

Zach Helm's whimsical, magical, thoughtful and sometimes pretty funny family film surprised me with its charm and relative insight; I enjoyed it quite a bit more than I ever could've expected. Dustin Hoffman is Mr. Magorium, the "eccentric" old man (indeed, some reports suggest h...( read more)e's 243 years old!) who runs his magical toy store in a tiny corner of New York City. Helping him is piano prodigy turned store manager Molly Mahoney (Natalie Portman), who has forsaken her burgeoning career as a composer and pianist for long hours tending to Mr. Magorium's quirks, his wild imagination, and the store which has eminated from such things. Helping both of them is young Eric Applebaum (Zach Mills), a smart, quirky 9-year-old devoid of friends (outside of the store) who even puts off his fellow children when he plays around them inside the store. Mr. Magorium is "departing" and needs to assess the value of his life's work, so he hires "the mutant" Henry Weston (Jason Bateman, in the same season as "Juno"), an accountant who works all day and has no fun. Gradually, little by little, he becomes first Eric's friend, then Molly's, and begins to possibly see a twinkle of the wonderment the store has to offer. How immersed in the adult world of work and paper would you have to be to miss a door with a handle which seems to shift the rooms behind it, a gigantic ball, a live pet zebra, books which seemingly give you whatever you're searching for (actually make things materialize from the page) and fish mobiles with live, fresh fish? Such is Henry's lot in life until he walks into Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium. The plot concerns Henry's change from uptight adult to chidlike waif, and Molly's shift from childlike waif and follower of Mr. Magorium's whims to full-fledged adult with belief in herself, and young Eric's shift from odd loner to...odd loner with friends? The film is the directorial debut of screenwriter Zach Helm, who previously wrote Marc Forster's "Stranger Than Fiction" (2006). That also involved occult-power-imbued objects and uptight accountants getting loose and finding their inner sparks and Dustin Hoffman as a quirky old eccentric. What Helm lacks in craft, he more than makes up for in spirit, imagination and whimsy. This film, then, is a remarkable construction. From the set design, to the cinematography to just the general energy level of the story, this is the kind of movie where hyperkinetic doesn't really begin to cover it; it practically oozes sugar and light. That being said, it is fun and sweet and thoughtful and surprisingly grown up for a G-rated family film. But it is a family film, and one adults might possibly enjoy just as much as their offspring.

Plot: Imagine Willie Wonka less the chocolate.
Acting: No stretching here unless you count Dustin Hoffman?s weird lisp.
Special Effects: Very impressive. It is a magical toy store after all.

The Skinny: A story of what to do when you no longer believe in yourself.
Cinemati...( read more)cally beautiful, this children?s movie, deep down, is about believing in yourself and what you?re capable of. Basically this flick focuses on Mahoney who works for Mr. Magorium who owns a magical toy store. Mahoney was considered a musical genius as a kid but now at age 23 still awaits the inspiration to finish her first great creation as an adult. In a sense, she feels stuck as the manager of a toy store. Which really is not that bad when the toy store is as flickin? cool as Mr. Magorium?s. When inside the store, everywhere you look magic happens. From a door that leads to a room where the contents can be changed by the turn of a dial, to a big book that contains all of the store?s inventory within its pages and all one must do is ask for the toy and turn to the appropriate page and poof it appears. The store itself ends up taking on a bigger personality then the characters and the special effects do a wonderful job of expressing this.

The story admittedly, is a bit tired. We have the eccentric toy maker Mr. Magorium, played by Dustin Hoffman who kind of looks like a cross between Albert Einstein and Mark Twain.

Mr. Magorium desperately wants to leave his legacy to his most trusted employee, the store manager Molly Mahoney who as previously mentioned is the musical genius with writer?s block played by Natalie Portman. Also, along for the ride, we have the lonely kid who constantly is hanging around wearing a different hat for everyday of the week but surprisingly has no friends his own age. Oh, and Mahoney and the kid look like they could be brothers.

In order to appraise the store?s worth, Mr. Magorium must call upon the help of a bean counter. Playing what Mr. Magorium calls a ?mutant? is Jason Bateman. Personally, The Flicker thinks they severely under-utilize Bateman?s comedic genius here but I guess he is playing an accountant.

    The Verdict:
Even though the plot is predictable, (the old guy is crazy yet has tremendously insightful advise, the stuck in a rut 20 something finds out she can believe in herself, the boring workaholic rediscovers his youth and sense of humor, and the lonely kid does make a friend) I would recommend this for family viewing. The story is cute, it reminds me of a cross between Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Toys, and the magical effects will keep the chitlins engaged. Also the content is way tame, the worst language found through the whole flick is the word crap. So, with a good lesson to teach your kids this flick gets 3 flicks on The Flicker scale.

This is a very heart-warming, smile-inducing, and flat out good movie. It was admittedly aimed more toward children, but I found some stuff in there that was pointed right at me. For example, there's the line "Your life is an occasion. Rise to it." I agree 100%. "Heck yeah."

I loved it! The first hour was gone before I knew. It's very funny and amusing. I was afraid it could be very childish but it wasn't. It's just great.

What a surprising and lovely film! I had no idea what I was in for when I went to see this movie. I read that someone said this movie could be described as a mix between "Night At The Museum" and "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory", and I think that is a good description. Some good moments and special effects, however not the strongest storyline or memorable characters/acting performances. Worth a view with the kids, but not for a single 'grown-up' like myself.

This turned out to be a fun and quirky film. Dustin Hoffman is Mr.Magorium who owns a magical toy store and has been around for over 200 years. He is a quirky and fun character. Natalie Portman was beautiful and charming throughout the film. Jason Bateman was funny as the mutant(wait I meant accountant). Even young actor Zach Mills was quite good in this. Take out Dustin Hoffman and the bookmaker. The rest was good enough to make a movie on its own. Funny the mother didn't peg Bateman's character as a pedophile.
