The special effects weren't that great either but decent."The Mutant Chronicles" is a stylish adventure with a dark cinematography that recalls "Dark City" and "Metropolis" and interesting concepts of war in the trenches (like in World War I) and riveted flying machines (burning coal, like the ships in the beginning of the Twentieth Century). In the end, "The Mutant Chronicles" is neither a masterpiece nor a bad movie. It's the year 2707. Earth's natural resources have been exhausted by mankind. Battle rages between the soldiers of four leading Corporations: the Capitol, Bauhaus, Mishima and Imperial. Mitch Hunter (Thomas Jane) and Nathan Rooker (Sean Pertwee), battle hardened Capitol soldiers, fight a desperate battle against a Bauhaus advance. When an errant shell destroys an ancient stone seal, they find themselves facing a new enemy: hideous necromutants, with boneblades that grow from their arms. Mitch barely manages to escape. Nathan does not. The mutants multiply by millions and they destroy all before them. The Corporations' leader, Constantine (John Malkovich), is about to abandon the planet and leave countless innocents to their desperate fate, when he is approached by Brother Samuel (Ron Perlman), leader of the Brotherhood, an ancient monastic order. Samuel is the keeper of the Chronicles, a book that prophesies both the rise of the Mutants, and of the 'Deliverer' that will destroy them. Samuel believes he is that Deliverer destined to journey deep into the earth and destroy the source of the mutant scourge. He manages to recruit Mitch, along with a handful of like-minded soldiers: Maximillian von Steiner (Benno Fürmann), honor bound Bauhaus officer; sword wielding Severian (Anna Walton); street fighter Cpl. Jesus 'El Jesus' de Barrera (Luis Echegaray); fearless beauty Valerie Duval (Devon Aoki); and stoic warrior Cpl. Juba Kim Wu (Tom Wu) . "Mutant Chronicle" follows Mitch and Samuel's mission to venture into the very heart of the darkness in an attempt to save the planet from marauding hordes of deathless mutants. They all will be dying as they plundge themselves into the "Hidden City", now crammed with mutants. Mitch Hunter will be the final hero: he will succeed in closing the seal forever more, but not without getting himself infected and having to use Brother Samuel's mutant-transformed body as a kind of tool.

  Set 700 years in the future as humankind face extermination at the hands of sadistic mutants who have been unleashed from their underground dwelling. It's an odd but interesting and enjoyable film with lots of action and bloody carnage. Made on a fairly low-budget the film relies on clever use of CGI and minature work to achieve its futuristic setting, though it's quite obvious the movie doesn't have the same polish that other bigger budget CGI-fests have. It has its flaws no doubt, but this is still a damn entertaining action-horror that passes the time very well.

  Mutant Chronicles has been dubbed a new Blade Runner. However the film lacks anything great. The film is very bad, and the action scenes are very poorly done. Theres so much going on at times that you don't know what really is going on, and you have a hard time following the story. This is a pointless film with bad acting, bad script, bad special effects and bad directing. Violent, gory and irritating, Mutant Chronicles relies more on it's blood and guts to tell it's story, which ultimately fails because I found that the story was pretty much absent. John Malkovich has a brief appearance and he seems out of his element. Malkovich seemed bored throughout and seemed like he was in a dream. But considering that this film stars Ron Perlman who is I think one of the worst actors possible, it's only natural that this film would be bad. Mutant Chronicles has a depressing, muddy look to the overall picture. The action scenes seem rushed and like I said are very hard to follow. The acting is terrible and considering this cast, you can expect something nothing less really. Even Malkovich who is tremendously talented was bad. Mutant Chronicles was a wasted opportunity to create something pretty good. The film had a lot of potential, but it ultimately fails to do the terrible cast, bad script and bad special effects. Most of the film seems like a rehash of different action horror films, but this one is done very badly and the results in the end are very bad. Mutant Chronicles should be avoided.

  Shot in the same style as 300, Sin City and with a good cast assembled I expected great things.....unfortunately I didn't find them here. The story wasn't great or original and although set in 2707 it looked more like 1900? It just wasn't that interesting and fails to hold your attention. Probably sounded a great idea on paper, but this is what can go wrong with a SFX led film. Watch either of the Hellboy films again instead.

  I didn't expect much when I saw the title, the name mutant in the title is never a good sign, but I was surprised. The atmosphere was really great, being a historian I enjoyed the weird mix of Great War, cyberpunk and post-WWII United States. Reminded me of <i>Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow</i>, just not that shiny. It's like <i>Chronicles of Riddicks</i> meets <i>The Dirty Dozen</i> meets <i>Gears of War</i>!! Tension is used effectively and the film moves quickly enough, Thomas Jane is still good to watch. Also Sean Pertwee puts in a solid performance as well. There is plenty of action, some great fight scenes, and some creepy moments - but that's your lot!

  A very high liking for sci-fi films is needed to really enjoy <i>Mutant Chronicles</i>. It's very stylish in a <i>Sky Captain</i> kind of way. The action is gruesome and quite good. The film boasts a solid cast with Thomas Jane, Ron Perlman, John Malkovich, and Asian swordsmen Devon Aoki and Aaron Yoo. Character development for our heroes was a little slim, but it gave enough information to distinguish them and to make some sort of connection. The dialog was a little cheesy at times, and the plot was fairly one dimensional and predictable, but overall it's a pretty well made sci-fi action caper. It's nothing to write home about, but it's a solid way to spend 2 hours for avid fans of the genre.

  Nothing more than a bigger-budgeted Sci-Fi Ch-- excuse me, Syfy Channyl movie of the week. Had alot of potential but falls short in every catagory. Wait for cable and when there's absolutely nothing else to watch.

  Not good, not bad, certainly not original. Stylish in the vein of Sky Captain. Clearly a labor of love for those involved, but the end result isn't as compelling as you would hope.

While the story was predictable, there was enough going on visually to make up for it. Ultimately it felt like story (and characters) would have been better served on a more "epic" scale. Like as a (mini) series perhaps? Still...I think fans of sci-fi and horror will enjoy this.

  Now this is a good film :) Just saw it and its great fun and actually pretty bleak. Does anyone remember an Amiga computer game called 'The Chaos Engine' ?? well think of this film as along those lines in plot and design. The whole film is in a futuristic, punk steam, Victorian, heavy metal retro look, hard to explain but it works really well. You have a combination of spaceships, WW1 style trench warfare, uniforms and weaponary with a slight futuristic twist, lots of steam powered vehicles (including the spaceships), cities that are futuristic and old fashioned yet fused together and throw in some Matrix machine ideas and even alittle bit of Warhammer (spacewar) and you have a very good and original sci-fi flick. The cast is perfect for the film, plenty of character actors that just set the whole thing of so well, Ron 'Hellboy' Pearlman showing he can do no wrong at the mo :) The action is your typical guns n swords fare but the cast make it look and feel new. Some great design work on the weaponary and armoured vehicles in this film, really adds to the feel and time of the setting, it also helps the cast elevate the film despite it being kinda b-movieish. The whole film is a great rollercoaster ride with plenty of tense moments and gore as the team go further underground to destroy the 'machine'. What actually sets it apart from most stuff out there is the way its been filmed, much like Sin City it seems to have been done with a tonne of cgi and greenscreen backdrops. Not much colour either, mainly blacks, greys and browns, but this makes the reds look so much better when the killing happens, brings the comicbook feel alive and in your face, looks good mostly and the parts that do look abit fake tend to add to its charm. Just afew things make you think, why despite the world being set in the year 2707 is the everything like it was around the time of WW1? it seems things have gone backwards. Who built the machine and why? why send it to earth? The mutants aren't too good looking. Just like many other zombie films and abit too much like Blade 2 for my liking, they don't offer much in the looks department for design, kinda simple looking. And lastly the ending is an anti climax really, doesn't explain what happens too well and ends very sharply, shame. This film gives the new T4 a run for its money I tell ya that :)

  Watching this I could have sworn it was made for the Sci-Fi Channel. Or maybe part of the Asylum releases. Maybe Uwe Boll has a hand in crafting it? Apparently not. It's just a really terrible film.It looks like cut-scenes from Gears of War but less polished. It's grim and no fun. The blood effects look like they have come from Mortal Kombat for the Mega Drive. Green screen can look brilliant, sometimes even beautiful. Here it abuses an awful plot about something stupid and mutants. The cast may lure you into a false sense of security but when you think about it they have all had some crap in their day. Malkovich and Eragon spring to mind. Had it been a bit cheesy in a self deprecating kind of way I could have enjoyed it at least a little bit. Some dialogue was so bad I burst out laughing, but just 10 minutes later can't remember it. The kind of film that raises questions not about the story (though that is quite befuddling), but about how/why it was made.

  <i>The Mutant Chronicles</i> is better than many people make it seem. Yes, it is around the B movie level, but that doesn't make it a piece of crap.</p><p>The story isn't anything out of the ordinary, but I do love futuristic science fiction films. The first half an hour or so provides the most detail when it comes to the story and after that it becomes a walk in the park, which is normal for a movie like this.</p><p>The beginning and end has the most action, while the middle has some small spurts. At 1 hour and 40 minutes, there is definitely more room for it. The fights aren't award winning, but I've seen much worse sword and gun play. The futuristic design of the guns are nice and they look good when fired, but the sound effects are missing that extra something to make them feel extraordinary.</p><p>The weakest part of this film is the CG. Thankfully, this is not <i>Speed Racer</i>. Still, this movie is futuristic and there is a decent amount of CG to go around. It is not that all the CG is awful because there are times where the CG is good. There are just many more times where it is unimpressive.</p><p>The cast is made up of many recognizable faces and unlike some other films (i.e. <i>In the Name of the King</i>) it does wonders. Thomas Jane does enough to take the lead, even though Ron Perlman, who is great, carries a good portion of this film. I don't know why John Malkovich is in this picture and I'll just leave it at that. The two major female characters belong to Devon Aoki and Anna Walton, from <i>Hellboy II</i> fame. Both do good jobs and, what do you know, they both kick the most ass. Sean Pertwee puts on a good performance as he usually does and Pras, from the Fugees, even does a nice job with his small part.</p><p>Don't be fooled by the negativity of this film. If you like futuristic science fiction flicks, <i>The Mutant Chronicles</i> has stuff to offer. Just don't expect a masterpiece.

A steampunk zombie flick with a great cast. Familiar and predictable as far as apocalyptic monster films go, but steampunk films are so rare it makes for an interesting hybrid. The CG effects will give some useless whiners fodder but I found them more than acceptable and the visuals have their own style, echoing the desaturated Frank Miller adaptations with spot colour (guess which colour gets the most attention). The plot has an interesting premise but ultimately it's a bit scatty, the characters never quite get established, and the dialogue would've benefited from a venture into the realms of wit. But, hell, it's a zombie flick so parking the expectations will go a long way towards enjoying it. The main thing is that there's a charismatic cast, big guns, lots of carnage, and a very cool steampunk backdrop. It's not a defining moment in Hollywood, but it is makes for a good popcorn-and- pizza no- brainer action flick. <b>3/5</b>

  A "Star Wars" wanna be, but I did find it pretty interesting. The first 30 minutes were epic, and the blood\gore were pretty awesome as well. The acting and effects were ok, but that doesn't stop this sci-fi horror film from being a great flick.

  This movie is derivative, full of clichés, underdeveloped characters, but its still great fun and full of B movie goodness. <i>Thomas Jane</i> is still good to watch and <i>Sean Pertwee</i> puts in a solid performance as well. There is plenty of action, some great fight scenes, and some creepy moments. The whole retro mix of world war I and future technology is truly worth watching alone.
