Great movie that I only saw a few years ago. An interesting story of finding and standing up for yourself.

What can anyone say about this film? So many things that others will never know about it. Daniel Day Lewis is...well, take a wild guess...

A study in the interplay between class, race and nation. Beautifully written film (it should've gotten the Oscar, screw 'Hannah and Her Sisters'). This is one of the only films Daniel Day-Lewis has been in that was set in the present and not based on a book (so, we see him with really bad 80s hairs and clothes dancing to bad 80s music - I can see why he does adapted period pieces...)

This movie really surprised me as a movie made in 1985. (I am not a big fan of 80s movies) I realize, it's Stephen Frears, which explains the difference this film has w/ other 80s movies. Besides the fact that the gorgeous and great Daniel Day-Lewis starred in it, the plot which isn't really a plot is fantastic. My Beautiful Laundrette is a story about characters, people who are outsiders, who struggles and try to fit in in London. There are many great scenes and steamy moments as well! haha

A decent script and direction. Good performances by Gordon Warnecke and Saeed Jaffrey. Daniel Day-Lewis was great. The music was awful. The movie, a little boring. Great photography.

Deals with some very serious issues such as sexuality, rascism and class divide during the Thatcher years, yet I found it not brilliant just OK.

Not hard to see why Daniel Day-Lewis is such a well-loved British icon, seeing his gay (literally) performance in this, one of his earliest films. Good luck for him with the 2008 Best Actor Oscar for 'There Will Be Blood.'

This is a cracking film, not necessarily because of the casting, acting, directing or even the story, although all are good, but because of its value as a document of a moment in time. How long ago it all seems - and thank goodness for that.

such a gorgeous gorgeous film. It isnt just about sexuality.. its also about the thatcher period where rascism was also an issue. I love the relationship between omar and johnny. and i love how there was the father and uncle figure trying to prove themselves.
this is definitely a must watch for anybody.

Quite simply there's two major reasons to see this film. It's Stephen Frears best film and a young Daniel Day-Lewis showing how great an actor he's been since the beginning of his career. The film tackles issues of race, sexuality and other issues in such a real and honest way. Wonderful film.

Stephen Frears is hit and miss with me, but always an intriguing filmmaker. I wish I had written something down after seeing this film as I really liked it, but mostly it just made me want to watch more films with the astonishing Daniel Day-Lewis, who I've been avoiding since The Last of the Mohicans save for The Gangs of New York.

Nothing like the gay kissing scene at the laundry room in context of British working class.
Based on a novel by Hanif Kurieshi.

Very good original film...set in a decaying part of London during the mid-80's of Thatcher's Britain. Tackles sexuality, racism and other taboos with aplomb.

One of only a handful of homegrown 80s hits, this touching film, scripted by Hanif Kureshi, introduced Daniel Day-Lewis and broke barriers with its central gay romance.

A really great watch thought provoking and still an important issue today, particularly in this sh*thole Northern Ireland.

A terrific film involving a Pakistani-Anglo gay couple in 1980's London. From filmmaker Stephen Frears.

THie si teh first Daniel Day-Lewis movie I ever watched and he made quite an impression on me. Frears explores cultural and sexual differences in the very watchable movie.

Very painful story-wise, but again pretty much anything w/ Daniel Day-Lewis in it, (except The Crucible, gag!) is always great! Saeed Jaffrey is also so charismatic. Very very worthwhile movie to watch!

An interesting, gay-flavored flick. Won't recommend it for the story, but if you're a gay boy, it offers some themes you'll probably recognize from the Real World (not the show).

Wonderful film of gay love, exploring social, ethnic, and sexual issues and contradictions. Does not overplay the sexual imagery but shows friendship growing into love and overcoming ethnic and social barriers.

My Beautiful Laundrette is a movie with great characters and a bad script. I kept thinking, what a shame that these wonderful characters were so well developed but the story was not. The whole thing just never came together. Loose ends abound through-out the script that lets down the most interesting cast of characters. The actors gave wonderful performances - but the story-line was all over the place and the ending leaves you feeling as though you left in the middle of the film. I faultered between giving this 2 or 3 stars - but opted for 3 only because the characters were so good - they make it worth sitting out this movie. C

Had to see this one for FTVMS 320. Certainly wasn't one of my favourites. It's ok but is not really about anything, just presents a few weeks in the lives of people living on the outskirts of society in 80's Britian. Some good performances and worth watching just to see a younger Daniel Day Lewis confirming just how good an actor he was on his way to becoming. Having said this I wouldn't have watched this one if it hadn't been on the proscribed viewing list. Might be one of those films that rewards repeat viewings. I'll let you know :)

I enjoyed this film, and I would have given it more stars if it had flown a lot better. Section of it seemed to just jump and it was unclear what was happening.

A skinhead nazi (Daniel Day Lewis) and an Asian bloke fall in love? A beautifull film that leaves you with a warm, fuzzy feeling.
