Wow, look how different our cultures are! Yawn.

Great fun, but only if you've had enough exposure to Greek culture to appreciate how good a satire it is, otherwise it's just another American romantic comedy. Filmed in Toronto's Danforth Greek community - it was good to see recognisable locations.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding, is such a funny comedy starring Nia Vardalos, John Corbett, & Lainie Kazan.

This movie shows the good and the bad when a family that is devout Greeks deal with the (Vardalos) getting married to someone that is not of the same heritage....it has many...( read more) funny scenes worth watching.

You may be thinking, 'Four stars for that load of old tosh?', but wait, think about it.
This did a good bit of business in the US and the UK, and there's a reason for that. It's funny. Nia Vardalos has comic timing and charisma by the truckload and John Corbett is extremely good...( read more), too.
Sure, there are some over-used gags in this. but every family has those. If dads swear by something, like the healing qualities of Windex, they will bore us rigid, extolling its virtues 'til the cows come home, and whatever it is that dad swears by, will become the subject of running gags and family in-jokes.
But I will say one negative thing, which is why I've only given the four stars and not five. Some of the characters - Rodney and Harriet, Ian's parents, for example - are a little two-dimensional and charicaturish. You get the feeling that such charicatures are there, merely to be laughed at.
That said, My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a big, fat, bright ray of sunshine. Charm just oozes from the screen. It is as lovely as a big, fat slab of wedding cake.
