My Bloody Valentine Reviews and Ratings

I think the movie is at least worth watching, there were some nice crazy deaths in there. If only the movie was miner centric, he was the best part. It has a nice 80s slasher vibe to it, which gives it a lot of personality that it might not otherwise have.

SUCKISH! DUMB! DUMBEST 80'S HORROR FILM SINCE FRIDAY THE 13TH! THE FIRST FRIDAY THE 13TH WAS TERRIBLE! THIS MOVIE IS TERRIBLE TOO!

And so finally the slasher 'Holy Grail' has been re-discovered and after twenty-eight years of patience, we can finally see the nearly-complete version of this hugely popular early-eighties slasher.

...( read more)My Bloody Valentine original Pictures, Images and Photos

Notorious for being the film most tortured by censors upon its initial release, My Bloody Valentine has become something of a cult classic with a large number of fans. Even the most lukewarm horror enthusiast must admit to being slightly excited by the prospect of witnessing all the notorious gore that has, up until now, only been seen in a set of studio stills. The previously available print was missing over 9 minutes of footage, which thankfully producer John Dunning has now located. The on-line campaign to get the full uncut copy restored and released was one of the largest of its kind and thanks to the efforts of the movie's legions of adoring fans, we now have a special edition disc with nearly all of the glorious splatter intact.

A small mining town in Canada has become famous over the years after a maniacal ex-miner went on a killing spree in the early sixties. He was the only survivor from a fatal accident on Valentine's night that stole the lives of numerous workers and left him having to survive by feeding on the corpses of his colleagues. Harry Warden murdered the supervisors that he considered responsible for the tragedy and stuffed their hearts into candy boxes to remind the townsfolk that their incompetence should never be forgiven. Twenty years later and the town is preparing for its first Valentine's dance since the gruesome massacre, but it seems that it is not only the decorations and romantic spirit that has returned. As a mutilated heart is sent to the local Sheriff with a gruesome warning that there will be more murders, it seems apparent that Harry Warden has come back once again....

My Bloody Valentine is certainly a fine example of all that gave the most popular eighties slashers a significant standing in the annals of horror cinema. It boasts a likable cast that make up for their lack of A-list dramatic credibility with a warmness and depth of character that although laughably cheesy, evokes sympathy from the audience. The love triangle between the three leads is an intriguing sub-plot and the script is strong enough to allow the characters to work their way into the hearts of viewers.

It can also lay claim to arguably the best arsenal of marketable gimmicks ever to be included in a single splatter feature and if the authentic calendar date doesn't induce your interest, then it's impossible to resist the excellent guise for the maniacal killer and the creepy mine location. The gas mask adds an extra dimension to the killer's essential-clichéd heavy breath and the pickaxe makes for an exquisite tool for gory slaughter. You can almost visualise the director's smile upon witnessing for the first time the awesome sight of his bogeyman strolling through the dimly-lighted shaft and stalking his intended victims. In terms of slasher visualisations, it's pure poetry-in-motion and Mihalka understandably milks the possibilities.

Mihalka is no John Carpenter, but he does an impressive job in building suspense and he creates one or two decent jolts. The cast are surprisingly good for complete amateurs and their above-average performances are a rare and welcomed bonus. It was a conscious decision from John Dunning, the producer, to use actors that boasted far more potential than they did impressive CVs, because he wanted to invest heavily in the special effects. Mihalka has said that people don't go to see a slasher movie to witness a 'name' actor. He is right in acknowledging the fact that the amount of money a producer would spend on such a performer just to see him get splattered on the wall is an entirely pointless exercise.

You only need to take a brief look at my review list to see that I am an avid 'slasher-fanatic', but My Bloody Valentine has never been amongst my favourites. I often wondered how the movie could have even been considered to be better than the likes of Intruder, The Prowling or even Curtains, because to me it felt like I wasn't watching the vision that Mihalka had initially intended. Now, with most of the gore intact, the film feels 'complete' and in its entirety it is a completely different concept. Despite popular belief, there were many early slashers that were stylishly produced and genuinely strong entries to the horror catalogue. My Bloody Valentine is one such feature and its well-deserving of its legion of admirers.

The gore effects are as decent as their reputation would lead you to believe and the movie credibly mixes approachable characters and mean-spirited mass-slaughter to create an excellent mix of moods. Unfortunately we are still missing Michael and Harriet's death scene, which was either a decision by Mihalka (perhaps it looked too fake?) or that particular footage was never recovered by Dunning. It doesn't really matter however, because finally we have a copy of My Bloody Valentine that has nearly everything that was intended and Sylvia's remarkably grisly slaughter and the notorious 'pick-axe through the face' are visions that are an iconic part of the whole slasher cycle.

If you are even a half-hearted fan of early eighties stalk and slash flicks then I urge you to part with your pennies for this excellent example of non-franchise slash with panache that sums up everything that was great about the early eighties domination. No collection is complete without this sitting on a shelf next to Joseph Zito's The Prowler and Mark Rosman's The House on Sorority Row. The Harry Warden legacy has finally come full circle.....

This nice little slasher has a simple plot, decent acting, and relatively good special effects. Though, you've got to wonder how many dead bodies it would take before the sheriff would inform people there's a killer on the loose.

  • August 11, 2009

  • August 4, 2009
I loved this movie before and now after seeing the uncut version with the restored gore footage I love it even more.
  • July 30, 2009
Classic 80s horror fare that really doesn't add or take anything away from the genre. Heart in the dryer scene is definitely most memorable.
  • July 28, 2009
I haven't actually seen the original, but the remake is pretty cool in 3D.
  • July 23, 2009
this one scared the crap outta me when i was a kid

If this is what I think oit is.....
  • July 16, 2009
wow that had to have been one of the crappiest movies I've ever seen. Bad acting, bad cinematography, bad everything.
  • July 16, 2009
fuck it was better then the one now. it scared the sit out of me.
  • July 9, 2009
    i love this movie = )
  • June 24, 2009
Quite atmospheric and moody, but until 2009 has suffered the indignity of being violent and having a decent body count, but trimmed to the bare minimum. Unfortunate censorship aside, this is a bleakly entertaining and well-made slasher.
  • June 23, 2009
THAT MOVIE WAS CRAZY..BUT I LIKED IT.
  • June 22, 2009
Good 80's horror flick with an original story.
  • June 18, 2009
One of the most under rated horror movies out there only because it got lost in the early 80s. The coal miner look of the killer is especially original and creepy. The movie's plot is standard slasher film but it is filled with Canadian actors instead. Worth checking out but don'...( read more)t expect it to be like the remake. This one is way more tame obviously.
  • June 15, 2009

    Gorgeous.....
    twisted ending
but not surprised me a lot
  • June 15, 2009
Very bad acting and annoying characters. The premise was good...
  • June 13, 2009
Nearly perfect slasher. Better then the remake. Go Harry!!
  • June 8, 2009
it's kind of as bad as bad can get XD but the idea behind it is good
  • June 8, 2009
The original My Bloody Valentine was a very formulaic slasher film except when it tried to be a soap opera.
  • June 6, 2009
This was a great movie especially given it was made in an era of alot of chessy horror movies.
  • June 5, 2009
It's ultimately joyful to lie down, drowse yourself in a hack 'n' slash teen flick, observing the multiple deaths, howls and goofy interactions between young folks and unbearable officers. That being said,Valentines are frequently promising but this one had one heck of a bloodbath!
  • June 2, 2009
The perennial classic that has spawned a new 3D sequel. If you're interested in seeing what good horror movies were like back in the day, I heartily suggest picking up MBV (1981).
  • May 29, 2009
A lot of the blood and guts were fake looking. But story wise it was at least better than the new film. I like what the valentine cards said that the killer wrote as well. The remake could have used that too.

Some of the dialogue was smart too, like when one girl says some...( read more)thing like "my outfit is so hot I'm that I'm not going to make it out alive at the party". One part is sick where one girl's head goes through a pipe that's squirting water and the water is then coming out of her mouth. The best thing that the remake has going for it is that the killer is scarier. It also had more nudity...lol.

I have one complaint in regard to My Bloody Valentine. Now, by 1981 movies like Halloween and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre were setting the ground rules for slashers to come. This one follows all the rules excpet one, and that's the gore factor. Being that it'...( read more)s a horror movie I can excues the poor acting and the shoddy plot because I'm promised a healthy dose of blood and guts. I hate to be so black and white about it but that's all that makes or breaks a good slasher flick. Friday the 13th has it in spades, with a cool character to boot. As far as Harry Warden and his kills go I'm not impressed. Maybe one or two nifty 80's slasher moments but none worth blubbering about.

This was a classic 80's slasher film

For an older movie this was pretty thrilling. I wasn't expecting much because I wanted to see the newer one first but I am glad I saw this one. The plot had me guessing on who done it and it was real surprise when I found out who the killer was. A simple classic.
  • April 24, 2009
I don't remember the lst time I saw a remake and thought wow this is soo much better than the original but when I watched this it was all confirmed....everything about the 2009 remake was better and that one was in 3-D. This version just sucked.
  • April 15, 2009
so scary......, you will have nightmares
  • April 15, 2009
I really enjoyed this movie. Even with its bad acting. Nice twist ending and some very bloody death scenes. I cant wait to rent the new 3d one.
  • April 15, 2009
Possibly the best slasher the '80s ever produced, 'My Bloody Valentine' has all the blood and camp we so love of this kind of film, but with the inclusion of a few additions and tweaks that elevate it beyond its peers. The story is a well-used genre standard and the characters ar...( read more)e ones we've seen a thousand times before, but the setting and villain are just so effective, all is easily forgiven. The mine, a claustrophobic network of dark tunnels, is the perfect playground for a killer, and murdering Harry Warden, utilizing what is possibly the most ingenious costume and weapon choices possible for a slasher movie psycho, is just the man for the job. It's a brutal, nasty, mean-spirited film that is not afraid to get its hands dirty (seeing the newly released uncut version is a must!), and is necessary viewing for any slasher fan.

    A bit cheesy,but good storyline

A pretty good serial killer story!

A not enough known serial killer movie of the 80's, who could've made a series like a lot others of this period; Friday the 13th, Halloween, Elm Street, Child's Play, Texas Chainsaw...
But thanks to the remake, it'll be discovered by some fans ...( read more)of the remake wanting to watch the old one.
I'm personnally pretty excited to see the remake, specially in 3D. Hope it'll come to me.

The character has everything to be the serial killer of a series of slashers.
A sad bad past, a great mask (gaz mask), good weapons...
And like in Scream for example, he's friend with his victims.

Otherways, the mines are a good set for the action; even very good.
And the city and the rooms out of the mine are excellent too.
Very good choice for a thriller, cause those places can easily be scary.

The good thing is that I totally forgot who was the killer between the 2 times I watched my DVD, so, nothing was spoilt.

I really dug this film! Many aspects make this movie really enjoyable towards horror fans. First off, the killer looks pretty bad ass in the mining suit with the pick axe and the gas mask so you can hear his heavy breathing. Another thing is the entire Valentines gimmick. Now I k...( read more)now your probably thinking that it's a dumb gimmick considering that Halloween and Friday the 13th came out just before it. But look closer. Halloween didn't use any objects associated with the same holiday(Except for the mask, but almost every killer has a mask so it doesn't count in my book) and same goes for Friday the 13th. In My Bloody Valentine, they really played with the input of Valentine's day into the film, but mainly with the Killer's threats like when he find's out a valentines day dance is going to happen, he sends the a human heart in a heart shaped valentines day box and does this throughout the movie. Another thing the killer does is when the old lady holding the dance is killed, he turns all the red hearts in the room upside down which I thought was great and unique. He does more things as well, but the point being: slasher flicks had never had the killer play with the holidays that they were associated until My Bloody Valentine (Keep in mind that I haven't seen Black Christmas yet but will be seeing it soon. If the killer does play with christmas gimmicks, than I'm wrong here, but otherwise, this is true). Not to mention the great and creepy locations they used to make the film great as well as what they added to different locations to make it scary. Many things I've also only seen in My Bloody Valentine that I've never seen in any other movie to date like the coat dropping scene and where the girl gets impalled on a sprinkler through the back of her neck and the killer turns it on and water shoots out of her mouth. Defently the best scene of the movie! That was the other thing as well, the fact that the kills were well executed and unique as well. The characters development wasn't stupid and you got to identify with each one of them and learn about each one which was great. Also the dialogue was pretty good too. Some of the kills you could predict when they were going to happen, but they were still pretty cool. Overall, its a good low budget horror that was filmed in Nova Scotia Canada which is a couple hours from my hometown! But its a good movie all around that every fan of horror should see. I haven't seen My Bloody Valentine 3D but I'm guessing its nothing compared to the original.

This is the old movie. I think that the new one is much better. The plot of this movie is different from the remake but I just liked the story and plot of the new one a lot better.
  • March 21, 2009
A quite old horror / thriller movie from the 80s and there are many classics from that period. It was the first time i saw this movie now and i would probably have enjoyed it more back in the old days but still decent even today probably. There is a remake out now aswell and rema...( read more)kes usually falls behind the originals. Anyway a good slasher movie much similar to "friday the 13th" and other flicks like that.
