Worth a second viewing. Inspiring true to life story.
  • June 11, 2009
Daniel Day-Lewis amazes me. Every performance from him seems like he is giving his whole life into that role. This is no different. you might think that a movie like this would sensationalize Cristy's disability but it actually does the exact opposite. It is a glorious celebratio...( read more)n of his life which by no means asks you to feel sorry for him. He is just a regular person who is just as capable of doing something great with his life as anyone else is. That is the attitude that sets this apart from other films like this such as "Radio" that focus too much on the illness and not what's inside the individual.

Wonderful work by Day-Lewis. Look at this role, and then compare it to his character in There Will Be Blood or Gangs of New York. Wonderful!

I feel like an a-hole for not praising it, but it was just another movie about a cripple. Day-Lewis was good, though.

Christy Brown was born in Ireland, 1932 with a severe form of Cerebral Palsy. His doctors, neighbours and even his father assumed that because of his physical disability, he must therefore be disabled in the mind also. His Mother Bridget, however, did not believe this, and throug...( read more)h years of patience, communication and maternal love, Christy finally became able to show his intelligence by communicating with chalk, held between the toes of his left foot. From then on, Christy began to paint, write and read in copious amounts, proving that the body really is nothing in comparison to the mind. 'My Left Foot' is based on the true story of Christy Brown. The facts behind this drama make it an incredibly compelling and moving picture to watch. Its portrayals of disability and a societies reaction to it are affecting, credible and impressive. Director Jim Sheridan aims for realism at all times and this makes the film all the more emotive. Daniel Day-Lewis is a revelation in the lead role. He never slips out of character in the whole 99 minutes of screen time, and this alone more than warrants the academy award that he received at the Oscar's of 1989. Brenda Fricker too, gives a sterling performance as Christy's mother, and the supporting cast are all on top form. 'My Left Foot' is an inspiring story of one mans attempt to communicate his emotions, be respected and understood. Brilliant stuff.

To say that Daniel Day Lewis gives a jaw dropping performance would be an understatement. I actually got sqirmy thinking about how he had to put that record on, write, move around, all by his left foot. Hugh O'Conor is just as good as the younger Christy. It made me feel extremel...( read more)y lazy as well. This guy has done more with his left foot than I have ever done. Also, loved the relationship of Christy and his father. Really great stuff.

Daniel Day-Lewis may be the greatest actor of our time. This performance solidified it 20 years ago. I would like to see any actors who make blockbusters to try and act in this role. Tom Cruise, Arnold, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and even the great Johnny Depp could not pull this ...( read more)off. The story is great, the acting is great, the music is great, what more could you ask for? (There's no explosions, so most American's would not like it).

A phonominal true story brought to life by the fantastic performances of Daniel Day Lewis and Brenda Fricker.

DDL takes performing to a whole new level that has not been seen since early brando and de niro. The film doesn't attempt to be a feel good one, it allows the audience to see exactly what they want, allowing us to make the final judgement on how they want to see Christy.
