Critic Reviews
-
Vadim Rizov, Time Out
Diaz is a whiny irrelevance, but sharp supporting work from Alec Baldwin and Joan Cusack makes the proceedings tolerable for boyfriends.
-
Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times
Where restraint might have raised up My Sister's Keeper, a heavy hand has brought it down.
-
Ben Lyons, At the Movies
I found the movie to be really tough and challenging and enjoyable.
-
Ben Mankiewicz, At the Movies
I have a heart. I just don't want schlock.
-
Lou Lumenick, New York Post
My Sister's Keeper targets tear ducts so ruthlessly, it might as well be sponsored by Kleenex.
-
Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune
Uneven but deeply moving.
-
Sarah Sluis, Film Journal International
Tearjerker that aims for rarefied feelings as well as knee-jerk, sentimental moments.
-
Kevin Carr, 7M Pictures
On a second viewing, this became worse, and I began to resent the film for how gratuitous it became.
-
Simon Miraudo, Quickflix
My Sister's Keeper is a committee-approved nerve-snapper that, much like its main character, has been genetically engineered to MAKE! YOU! CRY!
-
Felix Vasquez Jr., Cinema Crazed
Strong performances, and a subtle script make director Cassavetes film one of the better tearjerkers of the year...
-
Rubin Safaya, Cinemalogue.com
The film has its flaws and swims in meticulously crafted schmaltz... yet also has well-conceived tender moments hiding in the fringes.
-
Christian Toto, What Would Toto Watch?
My Sister's Keeper demands nothing less than a tidal wave of tears.
-
John J. Puccio, Movie Metropolis
...blatantly, shamelessly gushy and gooey, playing false at every move with every character. (Blu-ray Edition)
-
Mike McGranaghan, Aisle Seat
The film has a profound and compelling premise. Regrettably, it seems intent on being about everything but that premise.
-
John J. Puccio, Movie Metropolis
I tried to keep an open mind, hoping something would win me over. It didn't happen.
-
Kam Williams, Sly Fox
A gut-wrenching tearjerker with a decent chance of landing on this critic's annual 10 Best List.
-
Prairie Miller, NewsBlaze
Remarkable in concept and utterly exquisite in its execution, this domestic drama at the deeply conflicted crossroads of family wounds and medical healing, would have baffled even Solomon as to the ultimate value of a child.
-
Daniel M. Kimmel, New England Movies Weekly
[I]ntelligent, moving and even occasionally funny, although you might want to bring along a few tissues just in case.
-
Jason Di Rosso, MovieTime, ABC Radio National
Cassavetes...shows great skill in weaving bright moments -- even an adolescent romance -- into the gloom. It's still bittersweet, but like mass-produced crème caramel, never too bitter.
-
Jenni Dawes, FILMINK (Australia)
[Cassavetes] refuses to let the material speak for itself, putting a famous-for-making-women-cry song behind almost every scene, and lingering on every sentimental moment.

He's probably tired of people comparing him to his parents and I really shouldn't but I can't help it. How the hell can the Son of one of America's greatest directors/writers and 2 of the greatest actors of all time write/direct such an awful and terribly acted film? The initial story was strong but was soon almost forgotten about, like it drew the crowd in but didn't live up to its promise. It's so heavy handed that instead of feeling any empathy for any of the characters I just gave up caring. Some of the depictions of cancer patients and medical staff are verging on unforgivable and are at best insulting. Don't get me started on awful acting either, I can't be bothered to write any more about this film - a lazy review of a lazy film, not recommended.

It is such a pity to see Nick Cassavetes, whose debut She's So Lovely was such an promising work, to make something this calculated, sugary and most of all manipulated. My Sister's Keeper is a film so over the top with melodrama that even my own words cannot describe how insultingly far it goes while trying to pull out tears from audience. Sure, the subject matter here is very poignant but it just not deserve this kind of pitiless approach. Cassavetes wallows in his images of children vomiting blood and needles injected to their body and some of them with corny slow-motion effect. And while not showing us these manipulative images he tries to approach this story like an relaxed family trip. This must be one of the most uneven film experiences i've sat through for a long time. From once talented director has now emerged an wannabe indie-director whose career has gone completely off the tracks. This is a miscalculation so huge that miracles need to happen for Cassavetes himself to redeem his career. I hope i could say something good about this film, but unfortunately i can't find any.

A very depressind and sad movie, but good performances from Diaz and the kids, but other than that this movie is depressing and very forgettable, at least to me, maybe if I had experience with someone with cancer then i would have liked it better.

One of the most heartbreaking films I have ever watched. The ending is so unexpected. It changes your views completely.

It got to the point that the girl hiring a lawyer to show her parents that she has the right of her body and that they could make her giver some of body unless she gives her permission.
Pros
Good acting and plot
It made me cry sometimes.
Con
It could be slow sometimes.
If you like a really good drama or a tearjerker, you should give this a try.

Much like the book of the same title, My Sister's Keeper is an instant audience grabber which gets beautiful and powerful performances from everyone in the cast. It's a tissue-filled, heart-wrenching, and powerful film.
-
A subject that really gets me, but a pretty mediocre film.
-
Very good movie for such a sad subject.
-
One of Cameron Diaz's best performances!
-
Good performances, very touching, and good natured, but because it did not stay true to points in book that were essential, I have to take off points.
-
so disappointing i was expecting to cry, which didnt happen and i just didnt enjoy it as much as i thought i would i mean it was entertaining and interesting but not my sort of movie it would seem!
-
A Very routine and manipulative tear-jerker thats just worth recommending for some decent performances and a few marginally powerful scenes. MY SISTER'S KEEPER is a decent film, and worth checking out if your in the mood for this type of fluff.

Abigail Breslin and Sofia Vassilieva deliver superb performances as the two sisters, but in the other corner is Cameron Diaz as the mother, in a piece of stunt casting that hasn't paid off. It's a role made for someone like Toni Collette or Laura Linney; Diaz simply doesn't have the acting chops to carry it off. Her attempt at on-cue crying is positively risible.

My Sister's Keeper glosses its subject until it glistens. No matter what is happening, it has to look beautiful and harmonious. It's just too much. I was never that emotionally involved with the characters & story because the director (Cassavetes) is constantly trying to pull at your heart strings and it gets annoying. There are a few touching scenes, like the romance between Kate and Taylor, but there's also too much of the tear-jerking kind. The movie needed a softer approach despite some decent performances. It also doesn't go deep enough into the moral and ethical questions that it raises because of the ending.

Now, this one's a huge disappointment. The plot had extremely extraordinary potential to strike a chord in the viewer's heart, but unfortunately it fell into uncompetitive hands. Had it being exploited to the fullest, it surely would have been one of the biggest hits of the year. The performances by almost all the actors were first-rate. However, it's the execution & screenplay of the movie that play a key role in drowning & ruining it miserably. The movie surely had its moments, but they were too few to be taken into consideration. What should have been a tearjerker family drama ends up as a mediocre emotional drama. "BAGHBAN" famed director Ravi Chopra'd probably have handled this far better. An excellent opportunity (& plot) gone haywire!!!

I did not expect to like My Sister's Keeper at all. It looked manipulative, contrived, far-fetched, and predictable. Seriously, its a Jodi Picoult book. And its all those things, but really pretty good. I really did not like the monologues that much. They just didn't really flow, and didn't feel natural at all. I really liked the way it was directed and presented, though. I guess, this just kind of falls between the film that are just good, and those that really are great. Its not a masterpiece in any sense of the word; but it grabs the heartstrings and teases the emotions pretty much from start to finish, and that's got to count for something.
-
Every bit as contrived and draggy as I had anticipated but somehow still had the capacity to make me cry. I blame Abigail Breslin.

Rather than rely on them to bring forth the emotional punch necessary, he decides that he isn't a film-maker, but a DJ instead. Playing some terribly bland and soul destroying piece of acoustic shit. I didn't come here for a selection of terrible music videos. He also has a way of shooting every scene with bright light coming through the windows, creating nauseating orange glows, EVERYWHERE! The performances may have been good. It's impossible to judge them through Cassavetes' inept storytelling. Baldwin's lawyer, the most interesting character in the book, is sidelined and as a final insult the ending changes the entire tone and message of the story. Such a great premise was squandered here.
