Mysterious Skin

Bill Sage, Brady Corbet, Chase Ellison, Chris Mulkey, Elisabeth Shue

"The summer I was eight years old, five hours disappeared from my life. Five hours, lost, gone without a trace..." These are the words of Brian Lackey, a troubled 18-year-old, growing up in the stifli...( read more  read more... )ngly small town of Hutchinson, KS. Plagued by nightmares, Brian believes that he may have been the victim of an alien abduction. Local Neil McCormick however, is the ultimate beautiful outsider. With a loving but promiscuous mother, Neil is wise beyond his years and curious about his developing sexuality, having found what he perceives to be love from his Little League baseball coach at a very early age. Now, 10 years later, Neil is a teenage hustler, nonchalant about the dangerous path his life is taking. Neil's pursuit of love leads him to New York City, while Brian's voyage of self discovery leads him to Neil -- who helps him to unlock the dark secrets of their past.

This is a great film with a great premise but it suffers slightly from a bit of an anti-climax!

Not an easy film to watch by any means, Mysterious Skin is remarkable simply for its ability to convey many complex and powerful emotions without being manipulative. Some of the material here is downright horrifying, almost to the point of exploitation, but the shock someone as e...( read more)motionally dead as Neil needed was bound to come at a high price. The film is an accurate, insightful look at coping with child abuse, decorated with a unique motif and channeled through a handful of really excellent actors. Is it any surprise that Joseph Gordon-Levitt's career took off after this? He has charisma by the gallon; you can't help but what him while he's on screen. Brady Corbet, in a less showy role, manages to guide himself through a couple of emotional outbursts with perfect accuracy. Araki is also generous to Elisabeth Shue and several other character actors, populating his story with unusual, rich figures. The film is so lived-in and fully conceptualized that you leave it feeling like you've really been part of a different world.

Absolutely worth watching - but be warned again, this is extremely difficult viewing. Mysterious Skin deals heavily with pedophilia (never graphically, but the film is definitely not shy about telling you what happens) and rape, and if you take umbrage to seeing these subjects dealt with, this may be a bumpy ride. I also think, however, that there is no better film to see about the subject than this one. Free of sanctimony, beautifully composed, sensibly acted. A real gem.

i watched this previously and i've included my old brief review at the end of this one. it took me a 2nd viewing to really appreciate it. on the first viewing i think even i was shocked. that's not the point though. it's the purest film i've seen... in the sense that it's not por...( read more)nographic but it's not censored. it's in your face and realistic, like every film probably should be in an ideal world. i'll have to look out for other films by gregg araki. it's one you have to see! even if you can't stomach it... just put up with it, see it through and you'll find it immensely rewarding by the conclusion. the sad thing is church goers and other backwards types will probably class it as the devils work or just highly offensive when it's simply a very good anti child abuse reel.

    last time -

"really well made and focusing on a very tricky subject. follows the paths of two teenage guys dealing with childhood sexual abuse in different ways"

a very strange movie, but I really liked it. "Where normal people have a heart Neal McCormick has a bottomless black hole." it's dialogue like that and sudden, screaming scenes like "I am so sick of this stinkin' little buttcrack of a town." that make it fun to follow down thi...( read more)s quirky little road. Though when you get there, you're like, wtf??

This is the kind of film I don't like watching but end up being glad that I did. It was disturbing from the start. I turned it off a few times. Some of the scene's got to be too much for me. Once I knew where the story was headed is when I really wanted to shut it off. It's not e...( read more)asy sitting through a movie like this. I definetly closed my eye's at certain parts. I cringed throughout the movie. This is the second movie tonight that I have watched with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and I am convinced that he can play any role given to him. In the end, this film was dark, horrifying, and heartbreaking. It was gut wrenching. The acting was extremely good. I do recommend others to see this movie. Just make sure you can handle it.

This movie was upsetting. It was very painful to watch at times. The actors were all amazing. This is one movie that shouldn't be missed.
