A very funny alternative to the current superhero trend!

With a different director, this coulda been a contender. It is a flawed masterpiece (that's right, I said the word 'masterpiece' in conjunction with this film). Despite some dodgy editing alongside a director known for making commercials (and it shows!), it actually has many inge...( read more)nious concepts. The idea that Champion City's most successful superhero is obsessed with his own celebrity and is therefore portrayed as a bad guy ties in perfectly with the anti-capitalist themes in the film. The problems arise when the style of comedy reaches juvenile level, and though at times that brand of humour is funny there is perhaps a little too much of it. There are, however, many hilarious moments, some of which are incredibly subtle for such an 'in your face' production. For example, when Captain Amazing is complaining to his agent about losing his pepsi endorsement he talks about what it means to him, in his heart, and he promptly hits his chest where his heart would be only to hear the hollow sound of his suit's exterior. Pure anti-capitalism! Finally, a mention of the cast. The film has a wonderful cast: Ben Stiller, Bill Macy, Hank Azaria, Greg Kinnear, Geoffrey Rush, Jeanne Garofalo, Eddie Izzard, Paul (Pee-wee Herman) Reubens and, best of all, the deep-voiced singing legend that is Tom Waits. So, a masterpiece? a silly but funny superhero spoof? or a superhero spoof that is unsure what it really wants to be? It is rather open to interpretation but one thing is for sure, it's funny!

Ohh this is sooo good, before Stiller hit the big time, this is such a good comedy, great cast, great ideas, alittle camp but that just adds to the look and feel. Ever heard of a comic book hero called 'The Tick'?? well this is the closest thing to the live action movie. If you k...( read more)now what Im talking about you'll know what to expect, if you don't then you might not like this.

"We're not your classic heros. We're the other guys."

Kinka Usher. Ever heard of him? He's a commercial director who got a shot to make a feature film. So, have you heard of him? If you haven't, I guess the main reason is that he hasn't been given a second chance because this fi...( read more)lm, "Mystery Men" is probably one of the worst films I've ever seen.

A bunch of people who have very unimpressive superpowers, form a group to fight the evil supervillain called Casanova Frankenstein. What powers do they have then? One is good at shovelling, the fellow with the stupid accent can throw forks, the one who got a gypsy curse can fart like none other. Mr Furious should be able to release his fury when mad. The girl in the group can throw a bowling ball. Amazing! Simply amazing!

"My name is Spleen. If you want to know my powers, pull my finger."

I don't know if the filmmakers intention was to make a seriously funny film that makes fun of the whole superhero genre. If so, the director and the producers have failed big time. I can't even categorize this as a parody because it simply is so bad, filmmaking at its worst. Think of it that the budget was nearly 70 million US dollars. Most of the money may have been put to the art direction. They've tried to create a Gotham City like metropolis but Champion City looks like something from a cheap TV series.

I feel sorry for all the actors who've contributed to the outcome of the movie. The acting is a perfect example to be shown at acting courses of how not to act. And think of it that there was a lot of comedic talent in the cast, like Hank Azaria and Ben Stiller but nothing funny here....

A two hour long parody of superheroes with many intolerably bad scenes? Please, avoid.

The movie has quite a bit of stupid juvenile humor, but also spoofs superhero movies pretty well. This is the only movie that the director made, a special feature stated that he directed a whole bunch of commercials before. This came out the same summer as Smash Mouth's All Sta...( read more)r song, a much more memorable tune used here than the one theme song performed by Invisible Boy (Kel Mitchell), probably the weakest actor in the bunch. There are cameo appearances by Dane Cook, Artie Lange, and a couple other faces that may be recognized. Hip-hop artist Pras, comedian Eddie Izzard, and actresses Lena Olin and Claire Forlani have good light supporting roles. Wes Studi plays a good mysterious (just on the edge of confusing) wise man coaching the misfit heroes to work as a team. Tom Waits plays a funny genius inventor of non-lethal weapons for the wannabees to use to strengthen their forces. Greg Kinnear plays the well loved and respected celebrity superhero, whose costume proudly displays his company sponsors like a stock car, and who is captured by the super villain in a screwed up publicity ploy. This role comes a couple years after his Oscar nom for As Good As It Gets. Geoffrey Rush plays the super villain Casanova Frankenstein who is a strange combination of Gothic Romantic period language and 70's disco style. This world is mixed culturally and full of people or gangs with weird themes or styles or powers. Frankenstein's world domination plot brings to mind The Warriors and includes some pretty ridiculous special effects in a giant ray gun. This role comes three years after Rush's Oscar win for Shine and a year after his Oscar nom for Shakespeare in Love. The rest of the Mystery Men team is comprised of a strange grouping of comedians. Paul "Pee-Wee Herman" Reubens is gross, smelly, and loud mouthed. Janeane Garofalo plays a goth girl with a magical bowling ball that has her dead superhero father's skull inside. Hank Azaria (about a decade into The Simpson's run) plays with a funny British accent, throws forks, and still lives at home with mommy. William H. Macy (a year after appearing in Pleasantville) plays a strong, reliable family man who fights with a shovel and is the glue that holds the team together. Ben Stiller (who had incredible success with There's Something About Mary the year before) plays a guy who has the lame super power of getting really angry and throwing a tantrum but does not turn into a Hulk like creature, and who cynically leaves the group that he was motivated to build in the first place. I don't uniformly love all of Stiller's performances, but this one was ok. Still I like that this movie is bizarre and imperfect, yet a little sweet and cartoonishly funny.

Pretty funny superhero film - each with their own ridiculous name.

How the heck did they convince these actors to make this movie?

Couldn't really get behind this one, although I did try. Too hokey. Too hard to associate with the characters or the setting.
