I dusted off this movie to show my co-workers this summer and they loved it.......This movie is based on a dark horse comic. This movie has some really funny moments.Mr.Furious.the Shoveler and the Blue Raja decide to recruit more heroes after Captain Amazing is captured by Cassanova Frankenstein.Along with the bowler, the spleen, invisble boy and the terribly mysterious Sphinx they decide to go rescue amazing from the forces of evil.
A guy who throws forks as his super power. Another who hits people with his shovel. A guy who is invisible when absolutely-noone-is-looking. Brilliiant, 'nuf said.
To tell the truth, I didn't like this movie the first time i saw it. Ben Stiller is annoying to me, but a friend made me watch it again and now it almost a cult classic for me. bizarre and off the wall, with surprisingly more depth than initially thought.
The way a spoof movie should be done, creating its own story while still making fun of the genre.... even if the genre of super hero movies hardly existed when it came out.
Very hokey parody of a group of loser superheroes, which was definitely ahead of it's time when it came to making fun of the hero genre.
There is a ton of ad-libbing going on, which leads to a few comedy gems, and pretty consistent quality. As far as comedies go, it's not bad stuff. If you're a big superhero fan, Mystery Men is worth the effort to track down. Otherwise, pass.
I do feel the need to quote Ben Stiller here, "I never thought I'd see Paul Reubens (aka. Pee-Wee Herman) sticking his butt in a limo and letting loose on Geoffrey Rush, Academy Award Winner."
I thought it was funny. Never having read the comic, I thought it was an interesting story. Some of the music was a bit annoying, other than that, I really liked it.
Mystery Men: 'The Shoveler' (William H. Macy) can wield a shovel, 'Mr. Furious' (Ben Stiller) with superhuman strength by his boundless rage; 'The Blue Raja' (Hank Azaria) can throw any silverware with extreme skill; Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear), 'The Bowler' (Janeane Garofalo) wields a magic flying bowling ball holding the skull of her murdered father; 'The Invisible Boy' (Kel Mitchell) have the power of invisibility; 'The Spleen' (Paul Reubens) can aim his highly noxious flatulence; The Sphinx' (Wes Studi) can cut guns in half with his mind; & an eccentric scientist 'Dr. Heller' (Tom Waits)o invents eccentric non-lethal weaponry (the Blamethrower, Clothes Shrinker, Tornado-in-a-Can, etc.). They build out a Herkimer Battle Jitney.
A film with a lot of star power isn't the funniest film, but is defintly one of the best ideas brought to screen in an age where EVERY superhero seems to be getting his own movie lately we got something that was almost completely differant. The story is cool and very well thought out and that provides most of the laughs. The acting is great and each one gives their characters, well...character and you can't help but like them. Even the goofy "serious" villians. The special effects aren't really important, because their is not a whole lot of them to worry about. What is there manages to pass, because your not paying attention to it anyway. So you won't be rolling around the floor in laughter, but it's still worth the sit through, because you'll get a chuckle.
great comic book super hero film perfectly using talents of great actors, william h macy and ben stiller amoung them, as wannabee super heros in a world where super heros are a every day thing, superb comedy, and set pieces,
A much-underrated movie. This has been one of my favorites since it came out (and I've grown to love it even more since then...it's a simple fact that the older you get, the more jokes you understand). I am reluctant to say that this movie would not be as good were it not for its stellar cast, but I think I'll just have to admit it. This movie made me fall in love with Hank Azaria and realize what an outstanding talent he has (the Blue Raja remains my favorite to this day). William H. Macy has never been better, Geoffrey Rush, Ben Stiller, Janeane Garofalo, Greg Kinnear...all fantastic. Upon my most recent viewing, I also gained an appreciation for the dark undertone of the film, too...it simply adds to the bizarre-ness. "Mystery Men" is a hysterical film that's great fun.
Ben Stiller actually was pretty funny back in the day.
What really amazes me about this movie these days, though, is the amazing performance of Eddie Izzard as a fairly important villain.
Also, as with all movies I see that have the lovely Claire Forlani in them, I must note that I would love to get between her legs and...I don't think any of us really want me to continue.
This is one of those movies that's verging on pretty good the first time you see it, but gets stupider and stupider the more you watch it. And I hadn't seen it in a while, so I thought, what the hey, let's watch it again. And it was entertaining enough, I guess, but it's all in the first viewing. If you like your superhero movies campy (a la Batman '66) or vaguely satirical (a la The Incredibles) you'll probably like this one too. So get your fun out of it, and let it be.
An entertaining movie, though it has no substance what so ever. The only thing that I really liked about this movie was the terrific performance of Geoffrey Rush as the hilarious and demented Cassanova Frankenstein.
"I am one pantera's box you do not want to open". I don't get it; this movie is Dumb and Dumber quality, yet people don't like it as much.
REVISE! Upon my latest viewing, some five years later I can see how some of it is unfunny(read:Kel). Still, if you're a fan of Ben Stiller as any non-racist is, than you'll enjoy this as it's like pure Ben Stiller concentrate. SWEET DREAMS...LILAC!
One of my guilty pleasures. It's goofy, but I can't stop laughing! One of the only Ben Stiller movies I've liked, and only because Stiller really doesn't have that big a part in the film. A great comeback for Paul Reubens, and an interesting choice by Geoffrey Rush. What can be better than a film summed up in two words: "loser superheros."
Pretty odd collection of superheros who in fact don't have any sort of super powers (though I guess a fork in the eye would smart). Being a huge fan of Claire Forlani I was happily surprised to see her in a cameo. She wasn't looking as sexy as I would have liked and her role didn't give her much to do but this glimpse was as good as the rest of the tale -nice but not fantastic.
What a great cast and funny!!!! The cast includes Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, William H. Macy, Geoffrey Rush, Janeane Garofalo, Greg Kinnear, Tom Waites and Eddie Izzard. Mystery Men is one of my all time favorite movies. I wish they would make a sequel.
The film 'Mystery Men' has one of the best combination of cast in a comedy film. The film contains amazing talent from the likes of Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, William H. Macy, Geoffrey Rush and Eddie Izzard. And that?s only a few of the talented names whose comedic performances appear in the film. The movie is not your typical superhero movie and really gives some wonderful created characters. The action is based more on the characters comedic powers, but is still very entertaining. As well as having fun characters and a good story, the film also provides beautiful sets and a wonderful disco soundtrack. 'Mystery Men' is one of those comedy films which just don't get much recognition and must be watched.
well,
being a stomach blasting movie, it's not bad as a time passing stuff
the storyline is pretty familier like other comedy comic based movies
but actors did a sharp job to make this movie enough to enjoy
so I'll decommend to grab a DVD and enjoy a very lazy passtime
Most people consider this mediocre, I loved it. It was an underdog hero story, a band of misfit 'heroes' with bizarre un-super powers- where did it fail?
