I love the show and the commentaries during the film are hilarous, but I've just always had a hard time with Mike Nelson, so the scenes in the spaceship dragged the fun down for me.
As a hardcore "MSTie", I was thrilled when the television show that made a mockery of ridiculous movies appeared on the big screen. Although much shorter than I would have liked it to be, MST3K: The Movie is just as fun as the small screen version...and it made the word "interocetor" a staple in my household.
An absolute hilarious tv show that was made into a hilarious movie. I had a smile on my face and laughed many times through out this movie. Great jokes that hit about ninety percent of the time.
I didn't have cable growing up and our tv only picked up 4 or 5 channels so i didn't get a chance to see MST3K until the movie came out and I've have been hooked ever since.
Very funny movie, although the movie This Island Earth isn't really the worst of the worst. The movie probably has more funny jokes and fewer misfires than the average episode of the show though.
Don't be friends with a Mst3k or Rifftrax fan. Even if they seem nice. If Mike riffs (mike is in all of them) your favorite movie, that friends gonna think. "F*ck my friend I gonna see this Riff even if they like the show. Mike Nelson sure is more important than my friend. I'm gonna ask my friend if I can borrow that movie anyway" This has happened once in my lifetime. His family thinks I'm crazy. Frankly his family is starting to care for other peoples feelings instead of just each other. (And as for Mike) F*ck you Mike Nelson. I don't even know how your wife can still love you after riffing Nestor and Willy Wonka. Horror is acceptional. And some Sci-fi stinks. You're a f*cking jerk Mike Nelson. I highly recomend Quiptracks. It's basically the same as Rifftrax but just with good humor and no perverted humor at all. You can litterly kiss my ass Mike.
I had the opportunity to see this with the cast and crew taking questions afterwards and it was a blast. These guys were genuinely funny and very quick witted. They humiliated more than one questioner that got out of line. I always liked the idea of them poking fun of these movies but thought they should apply it to new movies. Now they have with Rifftracks, but it's a little different. I guess we'll always have the Oscar previews they did, with my favorite MST3K moment from Titanic ("I'm going to sink this bitch!")
Probably not the best that Mystery Science Theater 3000 has produced, but nonetheless a good introduction to the series, and taken on its own merit still an incredibly funny movie.
Oh, man. I've watched this one so many times, I'm surprised my tape hasn't worn through! My mother and I can quote every line - both the MSTers' and the original movie dialog! If you do manage to find it somewhere, pick it up.
A hilarious example of what was the phenomenom MST3K. Sad by the absence of Joel and TV's Frank, but still one of the best "episodes" this team ever put together.
My first exposure to the MST franchise, I had to watch it a second time around to get it better (first time was at night on tv when I was half-asleep) and I'm glad I decided to give it a second chance when I taped it. I had myself in stitches while watching this, I really did. Taking a below average film and subjecting it to ridicule was, at that point, the most original thing I had ever seen or heard and these guys made it seem so easy.
Naturally, after watching episodes of the show, I see things in the movie that could have been improved (like adding the theme song, which is now my favorite theme song to any show ever made) but considering what they had to work with and what came out, I'd say it's a great result regardless.
Despite what some call "dumbed down" commentary, there are still good laughs to be had by all. Recurring jokes such as "The Amazing Rando" and frequent outbursts of "I'm not an alien!" are always amusing. And the host segments are great, as they all relate to their plight of being stuck in space.
If science ever gets around to building robots that aren't glorified slaves, Crow and Servo should be on the top of their to-build lists. I know I want a pair of wisecracking robot buddies like those two
If you, the viewer, are not familiar with Mystery Science Theater 3000, better known as MST3K, I recommend that you rent/buy/borrow, beg, or steal tapes and dvds to become a tad familiar with the concept.
The concept is: riffing a B-or-worse-scifi-movie; the victim, er-- subject, in this case, is "This Island Earth", a classic from the 50's. There's this guy (Mike) who's been shot up to an orbiting space station (the Satellite of Love, or SOL) by a Mad Scientist (Dr. Clayton Forrester). Mike is a replacement test subject (Joel, who made the robots for companionship, escaped), and he and Joel's 'bots (short for ro-bots) ease the stress of being test subjects by making wise@$$ remarks while the movie is running. Then there are little interval segments that attempt to tell a coherent narrative.
The catch is that the bots are actually only puppets made from a gumball machine head, salad bowl, Tupperware interlocking set of flower vases, and armatures from folding adjustable desk lamps. The original actor who voices Crow T. Robot is Trace Beaulieu, who also plays Dr. Forrester . The guy who voices Tom Servo is Kevin Murphy-- well, if you really want to see him, you'll have to find the episodes on tape and go looking for his appearances as other characters.
This movie is just as good as the episodes that have appeared either on Comedy Central or the Sci-Fi Channel, but this time Best Brains, the production company, had more money to make better sets, props, and better staging of gags. The Hubble was great, as was the amusing and embarrassing segment where Dr. Forrester ends up in the Metalunan guy's shower. [aaagghhh!!!]
MST3K: The Movie was what I hoped at the time to be the first in a long line of franchise movies. Too bad that didn't happen but we still have this movie and the episodes of the series to enjoy
I love Mystery Science Theater 3000.....this is a movie adaptation of one of the best shows ever, and there are some great cracks dropped on the movie they "watch," THIS ISLAND EARTH
Really could have gone with a stronger movie but really, really funny. In fact this is the first time I was aware of Mystery Science Theater 3000 because of this movie.
The greatest comedy ever? I would narrow it down to either MST 3K, The UK Office, Seinfeld, or Mr. Show. I think MST would probably get the edge because the majority of my crucial development years (age 10 to 17) were spent watching this show repeatedly with my brother (something I never got remotely tired of). This film version is akin to a clunker episode. The movie they riff on isn't particularly funny. Also, the show was dirt cheap in a charming, knowing way (reflecting the shit movies they watched). The movie has a higher budget but it now comes across as cheap in a bad, TV movie kind of a way. Even so, I never much cared about the sketches...it was always all about the movie for me. And This Island Earth just wasn't the best vehicle for their riffing.
