Plot:
Aging former quarterback Paul Blake (Scott Bakula) registers at Texas State University hoping to realize his dream of playing college ball. But as luck would have it, the school's pigskin program just...( read more

"Paul Blake" (Scott Backula) was a star player on his high school football team with a million-dollar throwing arm. He had a promising college football future until he gave it all up to run the family farm after the death of his father.
Now 34, he gets his chance to play college ball when he is asked to attend Texas State, which has a team that has been destroyed by numerous scandals over the last season that eliminated all but one student (Jason Bateman) from the team.
Now the coaches (Robert Loggia and Hector Elizondo) and "Blake" have to bring the teammates together to turn the team's luck around, while trying to keep TSU's "Dean Elias" (Larry Miller), who tries everything he can to destroy the team since he doesn't even want the sport a part of his school.
This movie has a pretty predictable plot. There is little to no surprise in the script. It doesn't stand out from any other similar movies, and neither does the comedy.
None of the cast really stands out in this film, with exception of Backula, Loggia and Elizondo. If you have seen Miller in other movies, you will see he plays the same type of character in this one. Some of the characters are developed, but not by much.
The subplots, for the most part, is barely touched upon. The romance subplot is probably the best developed of them all, but not by much.
The games were filmed on-field, and none of the shots were spectacular. I think it may have been better if they opted for more angles than what they went for.
Despite the film being pretty predictable, the cast is pretty good to watch. They just aren't given much for the most part. Because of the cast, you can probably handle watching this movie a minimum of twice.
A chazzer/cock-a-roach... Quantum Leap... Sinbad... and Denise Richards... WOW. - "NOT A GOD DAMN THING'S been working for us! Like this goddamn suit doesn't work for me!... and this stinking tie!... and this goddamned shirt! IT DOESN'T WORK FOR ME. YOU KNOW HOW TO PLAY WINNING HARD-NOSED FOOTBALL? YOU PLAY FOOTBALL LIKE ED GENERRO PLAYED FOOTBALL! A guy who gave his life for this football team! He was a 140-pound halfback, and HE PLAYED LIKE A GODDAMN WILDMAN! NO! LIKE A GODDAMN RAMPAGING BEAST!! And that's the way you got to do it! YOU GO OUT THERE! YOU TEAR THEIR FUCKING HEADS OFF, AND YOU SHIT DOWN THEIR NECKS!!... ... Let us pray."
this only gets a reasonable score cos of the cast.there's a great line up here of new and old faces.the film is the usual collection of sports cliches and very predictable, its fun but its been done many many times before.the NFL version of major league.
This was one of the first movies I ever did a review on so it has a place in my heart for that reason. A fun movie if you don't take it too seriously.
A fairly run of the mill sports movie with all the cliches in place, but Bakula and Elizondo are always very likeable.
Very formulaic, there's no new ground being broken here plot-wise, but Necessary Roughness still succeeds as a very entertaining sports comedy, with some good comedic situations, quite a few solid one-liners, and good showings by, among others, Scott Bakula and Rob Schneider (before he wore out his welcome).
Major League but american football its ok but if ya gonna watch a sports comedy watch Major League or Wildcats
Maybe the funniest football movie ever made. Has some great moments, including the exhibition game with the prison team.
I loved this movie when it came out and I was 9 years old. Scott Bakula, Sinbad, and that model, cant think of her name.
Before the movie THE REPLACEMENTS, there was NECESSARY ROUGHNESS, which is a very cool college football movie. Scott Bakula, for the TV series QUANTOM LEAP, gives out a great performance as a washed out football player. Must see movie!
Good comedy with a college in a terrible football team. Model Kathy Ireland's cool for kicking one of other team's player's balls. Opps!
This used to be one of my all-time favourite movies growing up. I think I've seen it 20 times to date. The movie gets worse everytime I see it which explains why this isn't viewed as a better movie than it actually is. This is a great movie for sports fans and younger kids. The story is cute and shows what would happen if all hell went loose for a campus football team - which realistically would NEVER happen. Watch it, don't watch it, you're not missing much but it's not a bad football movie. The Program is better.
I remember that kicker chick was totally hot. But I also recall that if the team is haning in while being totally unable to score, they must have an amazing defense. So maybe they aren't so inept after all.
