Needful Things

Amanda Plummer, Bonnie Bedelia, Duncan Fraser

Stephen King adaptations are strictly hit-or-miss propositions, and this supernatural thriller from 1993 is definitely a "miss," based on one of King's lesser novels and starring Max von Sydow as the ...( read more  read more... )evil proprietor of a small-town antique shop named "Needful Things." That's the place where anyone can go to find the one thing they cherish the most (the town's aging jock finds his old, high-school letterman's jacket there, for example), but of course there's a price for such priceless keepsakes. Yep, that's right ... von Sydow is Satan, and his customers pay for "needful things" with their souls. The sheriff (Ed Harris) catches onto this hellish predicament, and, well ... let's just say things go downhill from there, with von Sydow delivering sardonic wisecracks as he wreaks devilish havoc on the town. Lots of stuff gets blown to bits, by which time this movie has long since worn out its welcome. Harris and von Sydow do their best to liven up the dreary scenario (directed by Charlton Heston's son, Fraser), but this is strictly for die-hard King fans, and even then the recommendation is marginal. --Jeff Shannon

Whimsical good fun. Certainly not on the same level of quality as Carrie, The Shining or 1408, but a good, solid romp through the horror genre. Lots of fun to be had here, if you let yourself.

Yet more of Stephen King's brand of Twilight Zone hokeyness is transferred to the silver screen, and it's a similarly lame experience. Max Von Sydow slums it as a shop keeper who sells the usual small town stereotypes their hearts desire in return fo.r pranks that set the townsfo... ...( read more )

Dude, the guy in this movie is one of the greatest villains ever. Demanding favors and playing people off against each other; he didn't even need to be supernatural in origin for him to be frightening. The villain isn't so much him though, as it is human pettiness, greed and weak... ...( read more )

All this Stephen King "set in a small New England town" stuff can get a bit humdrum after a while, but this is one of the better "the devil comes to town..." stories.

Like they say; some King adaptations hit, others miss. This one does hit! I loved the book when I read it, loved the m?vie too. Very good.
