Horrifying and merciless. An OK Stephen King adaptation which could have been better, but the film delivers the goods.

    46/100

Stephen King adaptations're usually not worth a shit ("Misery" and "Apt Pupil" being the exceptions) with awful Kubrick's "Shining" in front row and I can understand King's frustrations he expressed in many occasions throughout the years. Is it really so difficult to catch the es...( read more)sence of King's writing? Appearently. "Needful Things" doesn't do a full justice to its source material, but it is throughoutly entertaining.

Decent drama about human nature with its greed, selfishness and jealousy, superbly acted all around with my favourite J. T. Walsh's performance.

Stephen King is a masterful storyteller. Enough said.

Set in the small township of Castle Rock - a fictional location created by Stephen King - 'Needful Things' is the tale of an antiques shop run by Leland Gaunt, the Devil himself, played by Max Von Sydow. As the proprietor of the New England business, Gaunt gets his claws into the...( read more) town, just as antiques dealer Straker did in the King masterpiece 'Salem's Lot'.

Sheriff Alan Pangborn (Ed Harris, 'The Creepshow' & 'The Stand') does not buy the salesman's evil pitch. He sees straight through Gaunt's evil plan immediately.

Incidentally, Pangborn also turns up in King's 'The Dark Half' and is played in the subsequent movie by Michael Rooker. Ace Merril from 'Stand By Me' also appears in King's novel but is omitted from the movie. In fact there is much missing from the movie that can be found in the novel, but this is always the case with Stephen King adaptations. The movie does not let fans down, though ... the characters are well acted, dark and moody ...

Gaunt practically buys his way into the township, offering the residents antiques of their choice in return for payment of their souls. It is up to Pangborn and Polly Chambers (relation of Chris Chambers in 'Stand By Me' aka 'The Body') played by Bonnie Bedelia ('Salem's Lot') and schoolboy Brian Rusk to bring down Gaunt.

Typically 'Needful Things' is set in small-town Stephen King Maine --- a part of the world that will forever be associated with the horror author. The scenery is stunning, especially the coastline. There is plenty of action as well as a thriller feel and some very amusing moments too. Fans of 'Salem's Lot' will identify with this film, notably the similarities in story and characters. Evil invades a small town, slowly influencing its inhabitants, especially the obligatory young boy (related to King's own childhood escapades perhaps?) So enter 'Needful Things' and indulge your curiosity. But a little curiosity shop this is not. Probably one of the better Stephen King adaptations.

Like they say; some King adaptations hit, others miss. This one does hit! I loved the book when I read it, loved the m?vie too. Very good.
  • June 3, 2009
My favourite Stephen King story, not a bad adaptation. Max Von Sydow plays an excellent part.
  • May 22, 2009
    Taki tam, Kingowy filmik.
  • May 2, 2009
A pretty good adaptation of the King book. The cast does a really good job and Sydow as the devil works really well. If you like the movie I recommend you read the book as a lot more happens in the story than they are able to put on screen.

la idea es buena pero como serlo si es una adptacion de una novela de Stephen King ya en la pantalla no es muy especial pero aun así es entretenida

    AMAZING IDEA THOUGH.

    Stephen King at his finest.
  • December 25, 2008
Would like to see the extended cut of this movie. Max Von Sydow is brilliant as the devil incarnate. An interesting turn for the man who play Father Merrin in the Exorcist. Also enjoyed watching ed harris as the cop

I've never read the book but this was a okay film. Has a scary enough story and a good cast.

Finally a King adaptation worth seeing....
  • November 6, 2008
This is a very poor adaptaion of a fairly decent Stephen King story. Max Von Sydow is great as the uber-creepy villian but the praise for this ends here.

What would you sell your soul for?
  • October 21, 2008
I'm really not interested in seeing it, but since JT was in it, I may have to.
  • October 13, 2008
This was kind of boring but I wasn't paying attention 100%. Most definitely is from 1993 though.
  • October 12, 2008
I tried to read the book and couldn't as I got a good ways into it and still nothing had happened. i missed the begining of this film and only got to see maybe the second half but from what I saw I think I liked it better then the part of the book I read. it's supposed to be a horror movie but i didn't find it scary at all :/ But it's still watchable
  • August 3, 2008
Whimsical good fun. Certainly not on the same level of quality as Carrie, The Shining or 1408, but a good, solid romp through the horror genre. Lots of fun to be had here, if you let yourself.
  • July 27, 2008
I actually didn't like the movie the first time I watched it, but now I love it Max Von Sydow is just a creepy old man and is well casted in this temptation to evil movie.
  • July 12, 2008
I found this film to have a very interesting concept about the devil and the temptation he brings with him. It also nods at one of the books in The Bible, depicting Satan as a trusting individual and everybody will believe him. The devil has a name and that is Leland Gaunt, who i...( read more)s played by Max von Sydow, who does a wonderful job as Gaunt. It funny to see somebody who played a priest and now plays the devil. I also like Ed Harris' performance as the protagonist, Sheriff Alan Pangborn. Its interesting to see how people are too trusting and are willing to believe anything or do anything for somebody. It shows how fragile people are. Its not a horror film by any means but a really suspenseful thriller, and another wonderful Stephen King adaptation. I'll have to read the book to see how different it is.
  • July 5, 2008
Not very scary as much as it is a slightly suspenseful story about the devil who opens a shop in a small town. Not one of the best Stephen King movies, the book was much better. At least it is not the worst of his movies either. It does have it's moments.
  • July 1, 2008
    This movie was good.
  • June 30, 2008
I love Max Von Sydow in this. It's just fun to watch him play Devils Advocate and wreak havoc through small favors and bartering. Stephen King at his best, is great at tacking conventional pulp horror premises (surrounded by mist and monsters, going ...(read more)insane in a haun...( read more)ted hotel, a fatman cursed by gyspies to lose weight, a teleknetic high school comming of age story) or in this case making a deal with the devil. It's a movie to break for if your flipping through the channels without aim.
  • June 11, 2008
A Very good movie with alot of great actors.Ironically Max Von Sydown plays Satan in this and a priest in The Exorcist lol
  • June 10, 2008
I wish I could watch every movie ever made but I sadly don't have the time. I'm not interested in this movie because I don't think I'll like it or don't know enough about it to think I might like it. I may still end up seeing it some day though.
  • June 8, 2008
great king book and a fair job of adapting it to screen
  • June 3, 2008
An ok adaptation of a King story. Syndow does a great job.
  • June 1, 2008
Faithful adaptation of the book. Still, not Stephen King's best work by any means...
  • May 19, 2008
Ed Harris did a great job, and this is one of my favorite King stories.
  • March 24, 2008
This movie had potential, but fell through the cracks. To bad.
  • February 26, 2008
One of the better Stephen King movies.
  • February 22, 2008
    Great Stephen King classic:)
  • February 20, 2008
