Takuji Kitamura delivers this live action adaptation of Tatsuhiko Takimoto's novel Negative Happy Chainsaw Edge. Classified as a horror comedy or a comedic action adventure, this film doesn't live up to the hype. Still, this isn't that bad of a movie.
The concept behind the story has "over the top" written all over it. A beautiful female student battles a hooded chainsaw wielding man. That sure does sound like fun. Well, why isn't this movie fun then? At nearly 1 hour and 50 minutes, the movie is indecisive on what it wants to be. The choices were to be an over the top action comedy or a serious romantic science fiction fantasy. This movie falls right smack in between.

The movie does have its funny moments, but just not enough of them. It also tries to be serious, but becomes bland during the non-action sequences. The opening is quite thrilling and it is a shame it doesn't last for the entire picture.

I'd like to say that there are a bunch of fights and battles, however all of them are short and there are even some where nothing happens. The battle is about to begin and then it skips to the end. Yikes. Why? When the fights are shown, the camerawork and the choreography is good.

The CG is superb and not surprisingly, they only show up in the fights.

Hayato Ichihara overacts and while some will come to hate that, he ends up looking not so bad in this story. Megumi Seki is the beautiful warrior and there is nothing to complain about here. The rest of the supporting cast isn't too bad. It is nice to see Maho Nonami, of 2LDK fame, even though her character is pretty meaningless.

Negative Happy Chainsaw Edge isn't as exciting as the title, however this is still a film to consider watching.
