In the late 1980s, three close friends of the filmmaker -- Anna, Claudia and Uli -decided to relocate to New York, and von Praunheim made a film about their adventures, Uberleben in New York (aka Survival in New York), which painted a striking portrait of New York as the city was ravaged by crime, drugs and AIDS. Twenty years later, von Praunheim returned to New York City to see what became of his friends, and he reconnects with Anna and Claudia (Uli having moved to the West Coast) in the documentary New York Memories. The film chronicles two decades in the life of the women, as well as a city that's cleaner and safer than it has been in years but has lost much of the transgressive excitement it held in its glory days. New York Memories was an official selection at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
