While her younger sister Claire (Hedda Carney) gets along with her new classmates, Jesse sticks out like a sore thumb and becomes a target for bullies and the girls at the top of the school's social pecking order. However, Jesse begins to find her niche when the school's science teacher encourages her to pursue her interest in insects, and he makes friends with a handful of fellow science nerds. Jesse also finds a confidante in Howie (Reese Romagnoli), a neighbor boy whose family is more than a bit dysfunctional, but as adolescence begins to make its presence felt in her circle of friends, Jesse finds yet another area in which she's awkward and unsure as she tries to come to terms with her feelings about boys and girls.
