Critic Reviews from Rotten Tomatoes

"The kind of pedigreed pulp that gets left off greatest-genre-hits lists yet still inspires motormouthed overpraising from directorial enthusiasts."
‑ David Fear, Time Out New York
"Crisply directed, scripted with gems of hardboiled lines and superbly paced, it's a film of darkness and light that ends up in the snowy mountains of Wyoming..."
‑ Sean Axmaker, Parallax View
"Review Another impressive addition to Tourneur's filmography, and yet another noir with a cynical glint in its exquisite eye."
‑ , Film4
"Not only a nifty late noir but a model of economical filmmaking -- well-sketched atmosphere, deft characterizations, and a 78-minute running time."
‑ J. Hoberman, Village Voice
"In spite of that tantalizing potential, Nightfall will always just be a promising B picture."
‑ Simon Abrams, Slant Magazine
"Splendid adaptation by Stirling Silliphant of David Goodis's 1947 novel."
‑ Dennis Schwartz, Ozus' World Movie Reviews
"A minor film compared to Out of the Past, perhaps, but no less gripping."
‑ Tom Milne, Time Out
"Uneven thriller with some fine set pieces and beautiful photography."
‑ Michael E. Grost, Classic Film and Television
