Anna Fridriksdottir, Elín Hansdóttir, Hjalti Rognvaldsson

Hairless, gaunt, and pallid, the title character of Noi is an Icelandic slacker, a smart but alienated high school boy with a boozing dad and meager prospects. His small-town life brightens a...( read more  read more... ) bit when he meets Iris, the daughter of a local bookstore owner, who's vacationing from the city. For their first date, they break into a museum and kiss in front of a taxidermed polar bear. But Noi's life continues its downward turn; he's expelled from school and gets a job as a gravedigger, prompting a desperate gesture. Noi is sort of a collision between Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Scandinavian nihilism (the bookstore owner quotes the dour philosopher Kierkegaard). Fortunately, the bleak events are carried out with skewed humor and sly visual flair. The restlessness and despair of adolescence are captured with honesty and sympathy. --Bret Fetzer

Thankfully there's enough substance here to keep you interested till the end & you can feel the boredom & dissatisfaction of the main character, I also liked the humorous nihilstic tone of the movie

I really liked the strangeness of the main character, the cinematography, the acting, the direction. Noi is a real enjoyment to watch.

No Future in Iceland: A bleak, depressing movie for when you're feeling too happy (?)

A story of a simple and smart guy living so much lonely in a word of ordinary (and almost times stupid) people. The movie have a great photography and a original script.

Unique and mesmerizing debut from Dagur Kari. The setting of this small Icelandic town is stunning and at times almost surreal. We follow Noi as he searches for meaning in the bleakness of his surroundings and circumstances. It's a slice of life type of film, and the reason it wa...( read more)s entertaining to me, is that Noi lives a life that most of us would never experience in person or even in most other films; it's quite unique. If slower methodical movies don't bother you; I definitely recommend this one... a hidden gem in every sense of the word.

I wish I could watch every movie ever made but I sadly don't have the time. I'm not interested in this movie because I don't think I'll like it or don't know enough about it to think I might like it. I may still end up seeing it some day though.
