Undeniably a German respectful modern epic that teaches us lessons about life, family love and the new changes, opportunities and experiences that life may bring to us unexpectedly. DO NOT ignore this.

This is a film of poignant, powerful small moments set in a very large landscape. Unfortunately, many of the themes introduced in these moments are never carried through. For instance, there is a great moment when the exiled Jewish lawyer explains to an African how he was chased from his country. The African nods toward his sacred Mount Kenya, now owned by the British, and says: "When they steal your cow, you know it will be eaten and it will be over. But when they steal your land, it is always there for you to see." What a marvelous avenue to explore ? the parallel between Jewish refugees from Hitler and dispossessed Africans. But it's never taken further. The child is shown to have an immediate connection to the land and the people of Africa. Yet this theme isn't fully developed. Why do the Africans immediately recognize her as a kindred soul? And what does it cost her emotionally to leave Africa? I think the problem is that there are too many stories trying to be told here. Is this about an intellectual, wealthy Jew and his struggle to make it as a poor laborer in an alien country. Is it the story of a frivolous woman who learns maturity and to embrace different cultures? Or is it the child's story? It tries to be all three and many more. The end result is lots of exquisite moments but not a fully satisfying movie.

One of the best films that is able to use a zoom well, where the acting is beautiful, where the editing in terms of audio and even the cuts are fantastic and also, last but not least, breath-taking cinematography.

Winner for Best Foreign Film, Nowhere in Africa is the heartwarming story of a Jewish family who flee to Africa after the Nazis come to power. Culturally rich and beautifully written, Nowhere in Africa quickly became one of my favorites.

Much easier to manage than the book, while maintaining the tone of Stefanie Zweig's novel. This film combines beautiful shots of Kenya with a story of estrangement within a family.

Excellent adapation of semi-autobiography about a German Jewish family who flee from the Nazis, all the way to Kenya. A classic childhood memoir, enriched by several layers of a "fish out of water" elements, such as European city dwellers finding themselves in Africa. (The husband, Walter emigrates first and asks his wife , Jettel, to bring a fridge with her....she brings ballgown instead.)

The beautifully told story of sadness, tragedy and happines set against the most visually compelling scenery. The music score is amazing.

Amazing. It's a different tale of a Jewish family surviving during WWII in Africa. They still have to go through some of the hardships that the Jewish people went through, but they go through it in Africa.

More cruelty to animals! I hate that stuff. But still aside from that a lovely, sometimes funny piece of cinema.

Spectacular. Beautiful. Awe-inspiring. This beautiful film strikes the chords of everyones' hearts not because it's just an emotional piece, but because it captures the honest views of an open-minded Jewish family as they flee to Africa where ethical and inter-language bonds ensue.

    Wondrous, innocent, and unmissable.

Remarkable German movie, but beware of its semi-hardcore nudity! First ever movie to portray Jews having sex, unfortunately... They should bring here Puenktchen & Anton (directed by the same Caroline Link and starring the same Juliane Koehler) instead!
