Basketball isn't fun to watch, so the basketball element of this movie shits me. So do the characters (other than Josh Hartnett's character). However the plot was pretty cool I guess and the ending was really good and probably made me rate the movie higher than I should. Julia Stiles is ugly.
I was shocked at how this movie turned out I had never heard of the story before...and just think it is great didn't see how Mekhi Phifer was so easily influenced, by the otherers he should have trusted his relationship more or just asked his girlfriend for the truth. This one ended tragically.
I thought this movie was rather good and fairly accurate to the Shakespeare play. I thought the acting was good, and the renditions were great to make it modern. There was some good trickery and lessons here, and the ending was great with an awesome final lines.
Pretty risible really - a modern day updating of Shakespeare's Othello that fails to make any kind of impact, O features drippy, unlikeable performances (Mekhi Phifer aside, who is excellent), terrible dialogue, increasingly hard to swallow coincidences and scenes that go on far too long. There's no tragedy here, just unintentional comedy. And the classroom 'Shakespeare' scene is utter wank; psuedo-irony towelled on without any skill. Terrible.
A very powerful and extremely well-cast and well acted film. It is a modern take on Shakespeare's Othello, but, instead of doing it word for word, the main themes and feelings are translated on the screen, making for a better film than what it would have been if it had been a straight adaptation.
In this modern version of Shakespeare's 'Othello', Odin James is the black star of the basketball team at an otherwise white boarding school. He is headed for big time with his sport and is in love with Desi, the most popular girl in school. Meanwhile, Hugo is the coach's son, but he is outshone on court by Odin, and his father says he thinks of Odin as a son as well. Hugo's feelings of envy and neglect lead him to construct a plot to make Odin doubt Desi's love for him, a plot which Hugo is willing to take to its most extreme consequences.
Unfortuantly I was supposed to see it in english but the dvd believe it or not was only french. thank goodness i understand french. it would have been better in english, but it was still okay. It makes you mad cause you know that its based on Shakespeare's Othello and you know what's going to happen in the end but it was still cool to watch. BTW this is the longest comment I have ever written. LOL
Ok, here's one shakespherian remake that actually does the play write justice. Othello or O are both equally incredible. Other then the fact the julia styles has been in every remake known to man ( O, Hamlet, 10 things I hate about you) josh heartnett's dark dramtic side shone through
Interesting translation of Shakespeare. Good way to get teens interested in the story and translate it to modern times. I was impressed this was directed by Tim Blake Nelson- before I had only known him as an actor, this would make me look to see if he has directed more films.
Saw this a little while ago so not entirely sure on my opinion, but I just remember it being a little more violent and depressing than I was expecting! It was good, but nowhere near as good as I'd thought it'd be.
What a pile of pap.
I am really disappointed with this, i adore Julia Stiles, and lets face it, JOSH HARTNETT mmmmm..
Anyway...
I was an odd film, i liked the idea of setting it inte highschool, but, something was missing, and it was really crass...i can't put my finger on it to be honest...
If you people can get over the "Shakesperean Othello" part of this movie adaption and see the movie as just another movie without all its comparing to a true classic you might find this very interesting. Jealousy is everywhere you can't run from it, you can't hide from it but you do find yourself reacting to it. I agree this movie has a powerful performance to it. Good Job.
such a amazing movie to watch.. this is a movie im able to watch all day everyday if i wanted 2.. every1 who hasent seen it should take the time to actually see it
I love this movie. Its good but also very sad because of what happens. It should not of happened like that and I think everyone should see this movie!!
This wasn't a bad drama/thriller. I was pretty shocked at some of the things that happened in this film (I've never read the book). I thought all the actors, were well cast here. Even Julia Stiles, though it pains me to say that.
This is one of those movies I thought I was going to like because generally I like Sheakspearian plays updated. However, I wasn't able to watch it past the first 30 minutes it was like slow torture. It might have gotten better toward the end, but I don't know.
