48% from critics? I'm not sure what their problems is, but this is a fun movie to watch!

Sure it's no masterpiece, but a great time capsule, us being able to look into the 60's in the with the Rat Packers.

In comparison to the Clooney Ocean's 11: Other than both heist leaders a...( read more)re named Danny Ocean, nothing else is the same. I enjoyed the new one (still haven't watched the sequels), but it was overly complicated and hard to watch if you don't keep up.

the 60's original on the other, is straightforward, and a little less complicated, but given that security wasn't that hightech at the time either. :P

the ending, i say, was quite funny.

one thing I'll say for this film, Las Vegas was a lot easier to knock off in 1960...I enjoy the actual heist a lot more in Soderbergh's remake simply because the execution is a lot more detailed and complex, and it makes for a really fun puzzle. this film is focuses more on the ...( read more)characters than what they're doing. while the Rat Pack and folks like Norman Fell and Caesar Romero are enjoyable to watch, their characters never really go anywhere, nor really does the plot--it's a 2 hour movie that could be seen in 1 hour with about the same effect. the genre is also pretty hard to define--it's not a drama, it's not much of a comedy, it's sort of an action flick...it's just kind of stuck in mediocrityland as a Rat Pack movie that should have been a lot better-executed. nonetheless, it's both classy and classic and manages to entertain despite its flaws.

A whole generation of people don't realize that Sinatra did it before Clooney did. That being said, this version is a lot different from the "remake," but just as much fun. The Rat Pack is all there, trying to rob a couple of casinos on New Year's Eve. Of course, there are circum...( read more)stances that make the heist challenging, and the ending may not please some. However, the irony makes it all worth it. If you want a fun throwback to the time when Frank, Dean, and Sammy owned the Sands and Vegas was controlled by the Mob, Ocean's 11 is recommended.

When Daniel Ocean is released from prison in New Jersey, his next heist is already planned. Danny's target are three Las Vegas casinos: The Bellagio, the Mirage and the MGM Grand. They all belong to ruthless entrepreneur Terry Benedict, who, by the way, also shows a certain inter...( read more)est in Danny's beautiful ex-wife Tess. During a much-anticipated boxing event (Lennox Lewis vs. Wladimir Klitschko), there will be $150 million in the safe, 70 yards below the strip. So, Danny starts to hire professionals from all over the country: There's the card magician Rusty Ryan, the perfect pickpocket Linus Caldwell and the ingenious pyrotechnician Basher Tarr. Reuben Tishkoff, who lost a casino to Benedict, provides funding, the brothers Virgil and Turk Malloy will drive and help, and Frank Catton, a professional card dealer, gets a job at the casino to watch the routines. Saul Bloom, already retired, will play the rich heavy weaponry dealer and live in the hotel, while Livingston Dell bugs the place to have a look over the shoulders of the security personnel. Finally, the chinese acrobat artist Yen will be the one to move inside the safe before the motion detectors are turned off. There are three rules to be followed: First: no blood. Second: Rob only who deserves it. Third: Do it as if you have nothing to lose. When the day of the boxing event finally draws near, all is set, and Benedict doesn't have a clue - or does he?

When it comes to movies, I'm the opposite of old-fashioned. Old movies always seem to me artificial and condescending. This also happened with this original Ocean's 11 (that it's also way more sexist than the remake...hey, I'm an activist, it's a curse)
  • August 24, 2009
