An interesting adaptation of John Steinbeck's classic novel, highlighted by strong performances from Gary Sinise and John Malkovich.

Great performances with John Malcovich as great as he always is, being the key character of the movie and keeping the thrill going. Gary Sinise does a higher-than-average job both in the acting and the directing department.

One of the novel-to-movie adaptations that remain true ...( read more)to the book to an extreme degree. Doing thus, however, it misses the elements that would belong better in the book while could have been altered in the movie for the sake of saving it.

Human, emotional, an exciting journey of life, of a beautiful friendship and of tragic death. A great movie, but just as it usually (always?) goes, not better than the John Steinbeck masterpiece.

a well done effort here, if only because the producers reached so high in attempting steinbeck's classic consideration of what could be most important after we take care of the basics, like survival...how we care for each other? sinise is better than i first thought he could be,...( read more) and walston is always a fine addition to any work he is in, but this is malkovich's show as he literally shines as the simple lenny...

I did not expect the ending. Under the circumstances, it was probably the most merciful thing his friend could do but how sad!

don't remember all of this movie...but an amazing performance of malkovich comes to mind

Based on John Steinbeck's 1937 classic tale of two travelling companions, George and Lennie, who wander the country during the Depression, dreaming of a better life for themselves. Then, just as heaven is within their grasp, it is inevitably yanked away. The film follows Steinbec...( read more)k's novel closely, exploring questions of strength, weakness, usefulness, reality and utopia, bringing Steinbeck's California vividly to life.

i love this movie, this is all about friendship..

This is a good, enjoyable adaption of Steinbeck's timeless novel but doesn't quite compare to the first adaption, Lewis Milestone's 1939 film.

The most obvious reason why is because it is changed and not nessesarily for the best. Key moments are messed with or moved around in ...( read more)structural terms, or even skipped altogether (although that rarely happens). I don't like certain ways the novel was adapted here and it seemed somewhat incomplete on several occasions.

Another reason was the portrayal of Lennie by John Malkovich. Malkaovich plays the character extremely well but he is not the Lennie I (and I expect others), envisioned. His voice is higher, he is quiter and he is played as if he is medically mentally ill and not just slow and childlike. It was disappointing to see the charcter played like this but as a performance alone, Malkovich was magnificent. However, George was given an accurate portrayal by Gary Sinise. He gives a driven performance but the emotion is less prominant that in Burgess Meredith's performance, especially in the final, tragic scene, where I just didn't feel as much as I did when I watched the 1939 version.

Although there are these bad parts, and they do hinder it, there are many fantastic factors to mention too. It is directed well by Sinise (although I think the final scene could have been made to have a better impact), the score adds a bitter sweet atmosphere and the cinematography is glorious. I also like the little addition after the saddening climax, it works wonderfully well.

As a whole, if you want to see a faithful adaption of the novel, watch the superior 1939 version but do watch this aswell, as it is still a very good film.
