A smart, savage and original comedy. An outragious, gut-busting and flat-out funny movie from start to finish. A sharp, well-written and clever movie. This is a great comedy, made well before 'The Office' and much funnier!

Peter Gibbons: So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that's on the worst day of my life.
Dr. Swanson: What about t...( read more)oday? Is today the worst day of your life?
    Peter Gibbons: Yeah.
Dr. Swanson: Wow, that's messed up.

A very funny movie that provides both a true and hilarious look into an office environment. While the eventual plot that centers the film is just ok, its the characters that truly make this film work.

Ron Livingston is awesome as Peter. A nice enough guy being destroyed daily by his job. It is a mundane office job full of annoying people, sounds, and activities. The best example are his bosses, namely Lumbergh, played great by Gary Cole, who has a horrible delivery to all situations that is both hilarious and irritating.

Peter Gibbons: The thing is, Bob, it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care.
    Bob Porter: Don't... don't care?
Peter Gibbons: It's a problem of motivation, all right? Now if I work my ass off and Initech ships a few extra units, I don't see another dime; so where's the motivation? And here's something else, Bob, I have eight different bosses right now.
Bob Slydell: I beg your pardon?
    Peter Gibbons: Eight bosses.
    Bob Slydell: Eight?
Peter Gibbons: Eight, Bob. So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my only real motivation is not to be hassled; that, and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.

The story sort of surrounds Peter and how he is hypnotized into just not caring about work anymore. This causes him to do what makes him happy, basically upsetting the social order of the office. It couldn't comes at a better time however though, because consultants have come to the office to make some layoffs, but see perfect potential in Peter for higher employment.

These are just simple plot points though, the movie also features a number of supporting players all working in the office, with some dealing with simple stuff such as fax paper jams and others holding onto their staplers. And then you also have Jennifer Aniston as the cute waitress.

Bill Lumbergh: Milt, we're gonna need to go ahead and move you downstairs into storage B. We have some new people coming in, and we need all the space we can get. So if you could just go ahead and pack up your stuff and move it down there, that would be terrific, OK?
Milton Waddams: Excuse me, I believe you have my stapler...

Directed by Mike Judge, this movie is not a big budget but is certainly made well enough to have a certain style, especially given that its main location is in an office full of cubicles. The use of rap music certainly brings a counter balance to much of the activities going on.

The movie achieves its cult status through its memorable moments and characters. Its very funny and well written.

Peter Gibbons: Our high school guidance counselor used to ask us what you'd do if you had a million dollars and you didn't have to work. And invariably what you'd say was supposed to be your career. So, if you wanted to fix old cars then you're supposed to be an auto mechanic.
Samir: So what did you say?
Peter Gibbons: I never had an answer. I guess that's why I'm working at Initech.
Michael Bolton: No, you're working at Initech because that question is bullshit to begin with. If everyone listened to her, there'd be no janitors, because no one would clean shit up if they had a million dollars.
Samir: You know what I would do if I had a million dollars? I would invest half of it in low risk mutual funds and then take the other half over to my friend Asadulah who works in securities...
Michael Bolton: Samir, you're missing the point. The point of the exercise is that you're supposed to figure out what you would want to do if...

Milton Waddams: [talking on the phone] "And I said, I don't care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Bill that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I'm, I'm quitting, I'm going to quit. Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston) works for a big corporate computer firm named Initech, another one of those companies where they do a lot of business, but you're never exactly sure what it is they do. Peter slaves 9-5 in a small cubicle fixing software code. Livingston perfectly captures Peter's complacency, then his frustration, and finally his everyman disinterest in his job. "Office Space", written, directed and produced by Mike Judge, was one of the best comedies of 1999, and that's mainly because the plot is actually as important than the comedy itself, and the comedy is based on jokes that while being funny, they aren't stupid or gross. Office Space is funniest when Judge focuses on the rampant pettiness and politicking in the workplace.

A nice movie about the monotonocity of corporate 9-to-5 workers in the IT sector. It isn't funny, but is witty, and that makes you smile quite a few times through the movie. Recommended watch if you're in the IT sector.
