On the Waterfront Reviews and Ratings

Elia Kazan used this film as his argument on why he got some people blacklisted. It is a tautly directed movie, and brilliantly acted.
  • July 5, 2007
This is Brando's best performance and Elia Kazan's greatest film, and both of those are saying more than a lot.
  • July 1, 2007
One of the best films ever made. Nothing like a movie with a tough priest! One of Karl Malden's finest performances, and Marlon Brando is great!
  • June 29, 2007
They just don't seem to make too many like this one any more. And in the 50's, you got about 30 of these gems. Oh yeah, Elia Kazan was still directing back then.

I hate mob movies. I don't find that whole lifestyle fascinating like many people do... the idiots should know they're going to end up dead and just get away. having said that, this one wasn't as awful as others I've seen.

Now, that's some fabulous acting by an amazing man. "I coulda been a contender! I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am!"

An American masterpiece. Brando in his prime. Hollywood began its transformation to grittier more realistic filmmaking here.
  • June 22, 2007
Brando completely and utterly breaks your heart. Great acting, directing, story, and dialogue. Everyone must see this movie.

If you haven't see this, you should leave this website and never return because you obvious prefer dreck over a work of art. And this film is a work of art. It is also a stupendously affecting human and family drama, a political statement, and a suspense tale. Brando's performanc...( read more)e is one of the most defining performances ever captured on film. See it today.

Terry: You don't understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let's face it. It was you, Charley.

like a bunch of other kazan films, its like a play and it relies on the amazing performances. luckily, this happens to be a masterwork story, so between the two, kazan stages one of the ebst films of all time.

Wow I don't know yet but Brando is this movie may be better than Stewart in Mr. Smith. An excellent movie and I'm partly ashamed it took me so long to see it. Parts of it almost brought me to tears, the classic cab scene, the dead pigeon scene, and the end. An amazing movie and o...( read more)ne of the best ever.

amazing story. terry was such a fascinating character, brought to life flawlessly by marlon brando. this movie has everything...drama, romance, and even some laughs. so much attention has been brought to the conversation between the two brothers, terry and charlie, which i agree ...( read more), is an amazing scene. however, i find the final part of the movie, with terry's confrontation with johnny friendly and his crew, to be some of brando's finest acting moments.

Okay, so Kazan was an asshole and I can't give this a full five star rating. But, it's still a great story and Marlon Brando is incredible.

"This ain't your night!! My night" This is my night.. my night for a great movie.. I can't help myself shaking and shivering. What a performance!! Marlon Brando was God on the waterfront.. his character was really deep and classic. I can say i've never seen such a performance li...( read more)ke this in my whole life.. where was i?? where?? why i didn't pick this incredible movie up and washed some so-so trash out of my brain!! I'm the fan of Raging Bull.. and i can see connectin' between Robert De Niro in "Raging Bull" and Terry Mulloy in "On The Waterfront".. The way they acted the way they talk the way even they moved their mouths.. it's creative and epic acting!!

The Story is interestin'!! Moral test.. do the right thing or ignore it.. so up to date content in this material world! i don't care some of the people and critic said that.. On the waterfront was something Elia Kazan created it to be the excuse about political problems in that time.. but i really don't care!! Who care if i don't fuck my wife for years to create such piece of Art!! forget about it.. what i'm trying to say is don't ever connect this movie with some point that doesn't effect art creating!! It's nothing to do with that!!

The Scene in the car between Terry and Charley.. is breathtaking'.. classic dialogue.. super performance.. great score from Bernstein.. i can say this is one of the most powerful scenes and most powerful dialogues in my life.. "You don't understand! I could have had class! I could have been a contender. I could have been somebody..!!" Terry explored his anger and inner need in great way.. the way Marlon Brando talk is outstanding and unique! he acted with his eyes his mouth his voice.. God i love him!! This movie wouldn't be this great without him.. The Most powerful acting ever. and lot of great scenes.. like Father Barry Statement in the front of workers!! The scene Terry carried a gun to Johnny Friendly's Bar!! and the last confrontation at the endin' scene!!

Lord, it's Great to watch it.. superb experience of cinema!! All time favorite ....Salute Marlon Brando & Elia Kazan!!
