I found this film much better then The Godfather, something about it was just amazing and easy to watch and when it does not feel like a 'epic' film you know you are watching a good film, great watch and really one of Robert De Niro's best or at least greatests performance, it was moving but most of all a great story.
wow what a great gangster movie...i have just seen this movie 4 the 1st time ever in ages n think its sheer brilliant....this has got a really good cast of actors/actressess throughout this movie...i think that james woods n robert de niro are both so brilliant throughout this movie..joe pesci is brilliant throughout this movie as well.....the settings throughout the movie are all really good as well..this is a great gangster movie 2 watch n its brilliant..the gun shoot outs are pretty kewl as well throughout this movie
The Most Underrated Gangster Film Ever and second only in brilliance to The Godfather. Sergio Leone Directing, Ennio Morricone music and Robert De Niro On Fire what more is there to ask for in an epic 4 hour long movie?
Besides The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, Sergio Leone's finest work and is above and beyond other crime films of its type--except Goodfellas of course. Nobody beats that.
L'epopea gangster romantica per eccellenza, con i tempi dilatati, in cui con un abile incastro temporale si altenano passato, presente e sogno. Magistrale.
Obviously, a very well done movie. Leone certainly knows how to create a dramatic moment. This movie has been labeled as epic, I'm guessing because it is almost four hours long. I was not disappointed, but I did expect more.
this is Sergio Leone's epic gangster masterpiece starring Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. it took Sergio Leone almost 10 years to write this film. possibly one of the best mob films ever made.
Epic drama from Sergio Leone, with a strong performance from Robert De Niro. Certainly leaves you thinking, and well worth watching again after a period of time, to find yourself presented with more cause for thought
The first Sergio Leone film I've seen, and by god it's just sensational.
He captures the life of "Noodles", played by Robert De Niro, and his gang in three different periods of their lives.
Playing at approximately 4 hours, you never get tired of it because it's rich and doesn't slow down.
Lovely Jennifer Connely made her debut playing the young Deborah.
A movie about gangs of New York that actually delivers good acting and storytelling. (Later Gangs of New York evidenly used the idea, but not as well).
Sergio Leone's epic gangster masterpiece that needed almost 10 years in writing, the one that made Robert De Niro a star. This movie makes you want to cry and think hard about life.Everytime after I watched it, I felt exhausted and extremely sad. There is just so much stuff in this movie and it's basically impossible for me to compare this movie to any other single movie

Sergio Leone's last film is an epic so grand in scope, so enormous in concept, and so unbelievably ambitious that it should never have worked. However, the 227 minute cut as intended by the director is a feast for the senses. Often compared Copolla's "The Godfather", Once Upon a Time In America explores similar themes of betrayal, ambition, greed, and lust as Coppolla, but does so through friendship rather than family. It is a marvel to watch a film maintain a level of excellence for almost 4 hours but somehow Leone manages to do so. His signature close ups are in fine form but it is the exquisite wide shots and set design that stand apart. The original narrative form, butchered in the American edit is both fascinating and difficult to watch as the film jumps seamlessly between 3 different time periods spanning 5 decades. Ennio Morricone's score is on par with Nino Rota's from the Godfather and is among his finest. There are not enough superlatives for this film, and I haven't even got to the acting yet, which was uniformly excellent, except for a wasted Joe Pesci.
Leone's enigmatic masterpiece deserves a place as one of the top three crime saga's of all time next to the operatic Godfather, and Scorsese's visceral Goodfellas.
extremely poetic visually, and with an extremely touching score. but there are a few bread and butter flaws with the film. the real plot does not begin until the final hour of the nearly four-hour movie, and the first half is like a giant flashback to explain character relationships, many of which seem unplausible. finally, the conclusion doesn't exactly wrap things up. instead, the movie should be seen as a technical masterpiece.
Comparing this to The Godfather or GoodFellas is an insult to both of them and Once Upon a Time in America. The score is genius, but simple, just like the Godfather. That's where the similarities end however, because you could argue this is the grittiest and most real gangster film ever. The cast is all on their A-game in this masterpiece.
