This movie completely blew me away. Its simple and sweet, optimistic and charming. Personally, I love musicals and movies like this with lots of music in them; So, i was kind of hooked from the start. That is really all there is to it. Once is not complicated in any way. Satisfying modern-day musical.

Very small, very cute, with fantastic music and a very un-Hollywood feel to it. I liked it, but unfortunately wasn't as amazed as I excpected. It is warm though, it's got a real, true, genuine warmth to it that completely melted my heart in a couple of scenes.

Great music, simple and touching storyline.

The movie won an Oscar for Best Original Song or something, beating Enchanted (which I totally love!!). No doubt the songs lived up to my expectation. :) LOVE EVERY SINGLE SONG IN THE SOUNDTRACK. :)
    They both rocked. :)
(OK. The plot is kinda dry but the music make it up. )

Anyone who didn't know about this film and saw it would absolutely believe it's a documentary. There's no other film in Hollywood that's quite like this, with the same charm and ease and chemistry. Such a treat.

"Falling Slowly" is fantastic song. FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC. The rest of the music is good too. Other than that I'm not sure there was much of a script.
  • September 30, 2009
Beautiful movie. The performances from the 2 leads are so truthful and honest that you feel the impact of their amazing songs full on.
  • September 28, 2009
    thoroughly fresh, original and entertaining!!
  • September 28, 2009
Its predominant simplicity makes it a very special modern gem with a solid screenplay and an "anti-Hollywood" ending. This suddenly felt like a porn film: you no longer care about the plot, but you keep waiting for the song scenes to start. That means it has a beautiful soundtrac...( read more)k. The setting of Once is astonishing, and its overall premise proves that no big budgets are required for making decent films.

The music was great the story was OK.
  • September 23, 2009
A nice story very well told - they didn't try to get clever, there's no ridiculous twists, & none of the essential cliches are even annoying! A little too heavy on the music for me, but I'm not a fan of musicals.

John Carney's film is winsome yet sometimes profane, heartwarming yet bittersweet; the tiny Irish musical that could. The "plot" is simplicity itself: The "Guy" (Glen Hansard of the Frames) meets the "Girl" (Czech immigrant Marketa Irglova) and they make beautiful music together....( read more) But the Devil's in the details: The "Guy" (Hansard), who alternates his time between working in his father's vacuum repair shop and singing for pennies on the street with his knowledge of "established songs," as well as his trusty guitar to guide his original efforts, is a heartbroken Irish troubadour on the streets of Dublin. The "Girl", a young beauty who has more than one surprise up her sleeve, quickly takes to the sad "old man" who is enchanted by her as well. They decide to at least have a musical relationship, collaborating on some songs; she plays piano, sings background and writes a few lovely lyrics and he bangs out a mean guitar string. But is it meant to be? Writer-director John Carney doesn't interfere with fancy camerawork or even the typical jittery nature of digital video - despite a heart-stoppingly accelerated shooting schedule and an excruciatingly shoe-string budget. Hansard and Irglova are something approaching magical as two ordinary people in an ordinary world with extraordinary gifts who find each other. The music these two make together is adorable, catchy, and memorable. The results are an utterly lovely experience you won't soon forget.

NOTE: Winner of the 2007 Oscar for Best Song ("Falling Slowly").

This movie was very beautiful, but also very sad. I just loved the music and the whole story is beautiful. It was very hard not to cry when watching this. So was she really married in real life then, right? This was based off of a true story, wasn't it? The little girl was so cute too, I suppose that maybe it was just so hard for her because her husband was gone all the time and it doesn't sound like she got much attention from him either. It was just a very moving story and the music was wonderful.

What a good. Simply cool picture.
Using a director friend (John Carney) he used to play music with and a skeleton crew with a megre budget, they make a great musical/doco/feature film that has extravergentile tastes in quality and household entertainment.

Finally, a good movie! Well, after watching piles of mediocre to bad movies this past week, Once broke the curse.

This film was really interesting. It's even more interesting to find out that the lead actors are the ones who wrote all this wonderful music. The songs were real...( read more)ly powerful and the relationship unconventionable. I thought it was a breath of fresh air, especially given the garbage I've been watching lately.

If you enjoy good music and a casual, non-pretentious story as well as a gentle way of storytelling, Once is well worth watching. I think we've all had moments in our history like this.

One more thing: I know it's Irish but I stil don't understand why it's rated R.
  • July 27, 2009
One of the best films to come out of Ireland. Thats not to say it's excellent or anything but it did strike a chord.

This film could have easily been a corny run of the mill boy meets girl outing in Cameron Crowe territory, but luckily it's put together by talented young people bored with conventional relationship fair.

Director John Carney's craft on the film is appropriately Dogme at times ...( read more)with aesthetic similarities --hand held digital, deliberate long takes in real-time, sparse editing -- used to great cinematic effect.

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova's reflective songwriting is great and it's a nice alternative to the current use of indie pop in many a Sundancer quirkfest.

The acting in ONCE is very naturalistic and wouldn't be too out of place in the realm of Cassavetes. I assume Carney's advantage there is the amount of coverage digital enables and the luxury it provides in post to cut to. The film probably also has the most poignant use of home video footage I've seen in a feature since Wender's PARIS, TEXAS (1984).

I am sure a lot of the hype surrounding this film in many social circles is mostly due to the success of it's original music, but thankfully I don't feel John Carney ever uses it as a narrative crutch for bad storytelling, just as a drive. ONCE at its romantic best unfolds like an engrossing documentary and I think it would still be damn good as a legit drama if you took out the musical aspect, it's just the sugar-coating that makes the film a lot better in my eyes.

I feel the sentimentalism in this movie has some truth to it and comes across as organic. Certainly never becomes the exploitive banality of a Nicholas Sparks-esque estrogen fest.

It's a real shame more small films like this dont catch on as big as this one has. See ONCE for its human characters and love of folk music.

It goes to show that you don't need alot of money, special effects, or big name celebrities to make an amazing movie. Perfect in every way!
