Plot:
Grab an econo-pack of tissues, gather your loved ones around a cozy television, and bring on the hot cocoa--it's time for a dose of Christmas spirit. The tender and charming Mary Steenburgen (Par...( read more
)) dons a sour disposition in her role as Ginny Grainger, a woman who finds little joy in life lately--let alone in the impending holiday season. Money is tight, her husband (beautifully downplayed by nice-guy Gary Basaraba) lost his job, and the family must move out of their house. Ginny cannot even bring herself to say, "Merry Christmas," despite her family's enthusiasm about the big day. With help from Ginny's brave and loving daughter (sweetly performed by Elisabeth Harnois) and a Christmas angel named Gideon (Harry Dean Stanton), Ginny undergoes a life-altering experience à la It's a Wonderful Life. The result? Happy endings, hugs and kisses, pass the tissues.
Not a light holiday entertainer by any means, the plot verges on depressing at times, as the family struggles through money issues and the tedium of daily suburban survival. While handled fairly subtly, some of the bridging story--including a shooting, a kidnapping, and a drowning--might prove disturbing to children under 6 years old. And really: if the somber Harry Dean Stanton (Paris, Texas) repeatedly appeared in your neighborhood, cloaked in a cowboy hat and overcoat, would you allow your kids outside? Still, a well-made favorite to cherish. --Liane Thomas
Likely the first movie I ever saw in a theatre and one of my fondest memories and top five Christmas movies, until I watched it again this decade and decided I wasn't as in love with it as I thought. Still it is a lovely little story packaged in a box full of tragedy.
I watched this when I was little. I cant really remember whats in it but I used to watch it all the time. Interesting when you watch movies when youre little, you wait about 5 years, then forget parts of the movie, then when you watch it again, it all comes back to you.
What a wonderful christmas movie. Something every family or warm hearted person should watch. Beautiful.
My boy friend and me found this film to be very schlocky. Moreover, the dialogue was foreseeable and lame - particularly Gideon, the angel. There are thus much the large ones - do not waste your time with this horrible film.
Oh I LOVE LOVE LOVE! this Christmas movie. I beleive this would be one of my very top fave Christmas movies. I used to love watching this on T.V at Christmas time with my mom. Such a wonderful and heart warming story.
Quite possibly my favorite full-length Christmas movie. Why? No idea. Absolutely none. All I know is the cast is awesome (especially Harry Dean Stanton as Gideon the Christmas Angel - as stupid as that title sounds, he's the best character... so mysterious... he'd make a perfect Roland if they ever turn Steven King's Dark Tower books into movies... I always pictured Roland that way... and that's the bestest Santa EVER! Anyway, back on topic...), the story is great and original (who ever thought there'd be shooting and drowning in a Christmas movie?), and the theme is... well, tearful. I can relate... I've sort of become disenchanted with Christmas in recent years too. But I still love this movie, and I think I always will.
Shockingly heavy Christmas tale about a woman who losed everything to fins the truth behind the real Christmas spirit. Very moving, but sad.
