Not my favorite but still a good western. Kevin Costner once again does a good job in directing. A nice treat if you love watching western movies or if you're a fan of Robert Duvall.
So what's it about? A former gunslinger is forced to take up arms again when he and his cattle crew are threatened by a corrupt lawman.
My thoughts on the movie? One again Kevin Costner shows that his directorial skills are just as good as his acting skills if not better. This movie kept a nice steady pace and was concluded very well i thought, there was some amazing cinematography at times and all members of the cast put in solid performances with Robert Duvall excelling the most while looking very comfortable in his part. A very solid modern day western movie that seems to get overlooked, it is quite an old fashioned type of western which doesnt really spring into life until the end but it was an enjoyable watch none the less.
Most memorable quote:"We come for justice, not vengeance. Now them is two different things. "
A nearly perfect movie, and an excellent western. The craft on display in this film is a thing to marvel at. The story hits in lots of places--enough romance to keep my wife interested and enough conflict to keep me interested. The final gunfight is something. Duvall is in great form here.
I know I watched this edited, but I can't remember how good of a movie it was...if I remember right, despite the serious theme, it was quite hilarious in parts...
This is an excellent movie. One of the best jobs by Kevin Costner and Annette Bening. Duvall always is the best. This was supremely cast, as was Lonesome Dove starring Robert Duvall.
Though there are some fine performances in several scenes, as westerns go this had far too many lulls between scenes. The Costner/Duvall team was a nice one though, they just could have done with a better script. Nice to see Michael Jeter in this in a role a little diferent for him and? A great shoot-out towards the end that earns it's 3 stars here.
Getting to see this in the theater was a treat. The thunderous sound of shotguns and the wide view of the beautiful West. I'm not the biggest Costner fan on the planet but the man knows westerns. Step one: cast Robert Duvall. This movie was for Duvall what the video for "Hurt" was for Johnny Cash to me.
Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner star in this classic western about a group of free grazers who pass by the area of some corrupt sheriff and his lawman, and the trouble begins!!! They are forced to go to war against these trouble makers hiding behind a badge. Top 10 western movie and top 25 movie!
I didn;t expect much from this being as it both starred Kevin Costner and was directed by him in a time where most his recent flicks were dire. I was very pleasently suprised by Open Range it featured not only string and warming performances by both Costner and Duvall but a good story and one which you really get into.
Very enjoyable film. Proves Dances With Wolves wasn't a fluke. It holds the distinction of being the last film score by Michael Kamen before he died. Kamen provides a wonderful score, very Band of Brothers - like, western style.
Editing could have been better, but ultimately this is my favorite western of all time. the anticipation built up during a slow but eventful film sets the perfect scene for one of the best sequences in film history at the end of the film. accurate and thoughtful, this is a must see film.
Kevin costner really took a chance by making this gem out of his own wallet. The landscapes are visually stunning, the cast is an obvious and good choice, and the story is a real man's man tale.
Robert Duvall is superb, one of his best performances. Kevin Costner is excellent. triumph. Some of his finest work as a director. A gripping, compelling and great western. Wonderful settings and awsome action. Some of the best and well-crafted gunfights on film.
I really enjoyed this. Costner actually was back to acting properly reather than the mush he'd been churning out. Robert Duvall is usually good value for money, and was again here. Scenery was out of this world.
I was surprised I liked it as much as I did. Sure it's Rio Bravo meets Unforgiven meets every other western plot ever, but it's still done well enough that I was never bored. It's not masterful filmmaking like Costern's 'Dances With Wolves' but he does fare much better here than 'The Postman' or his uncredited work as a director in 'Waterworld.' As an actor, Costner holds the screen well enough, yet it's his few comedic moments that shows he return to something more light, a la 'Bull Durham' and 'Tin Cup'.
PS - Just when I thought the sound wasn't very good for a DTS track, the thunder from a storm scene kicked in -- the subwoofer nearly blew me right off the sofa (granted the sub sits directly behind the sofa, but still...) Just a reminder to everyone that DTS rules!
