Although everyone thinks this situation it is ridiculous, it really isn't. Who knew a movie about 5 people floating around a boat could be so entertaining (same goes for the first movie too- minus the boat part.) If you're not too harsh on movies or completely thick to think this couldn't happen then you should enjoy this movie.

I haven't found any conclusive evidence, but I'd be willing to bet, that this film wasn't made as a sequel to the indie-shark film: Open Water - That the marketers saw a film with a similar idea, and thought that the film would get more exposure on video if it had a familiar name attached. See the poster and the teaser trailer as evidence, neither mention Open Water 2. Plus another huge thing missing from this film, that I can't believe they would do if they went into production as a sequel: THERE ARE NO SHARKS!

They hint at it at least two times; one of the girl's feels something bump against her leg, and then somebody gets badly cut with a knife and we're shown a large trail of blood, alas no sharks appear. Don't let that dissuade you from this well made little thriller.

In Adrift we meet a group of young folks who are out for a day of fun on their friend's yacht. There are three couples; Amy and James, who've just had a baby, Amy suffers from a major case of water-phobia, the reasoning is revealed throughout the film; there is Zach and Lauren who seem like a nice normal couple; and then there is Dan and Michelle, it's Dan's boat, he's a wealthy-playboy who just met Michelle a few days before; throwing the rest of the group off, since they've all known each other since high school. They set off on Dan's yacht into the Gulf of Mexico.

After they've passed well beyond being able to see any land, they decide to stop for a little dip in the ocean. Everybody but Dan and Amy frolic about in the water for a bit, Amy is content to stay on the boat with her baby due to her aforementioned phobia, until Dan, being a total jackass decides to grab her and jump in. She instantly goes into shock, ruining everybody's good mood, which is about to get much worse in a couple minutes when they realize that nobody bothered to put the yacht's ladder down, leaving them stranded in the water.

What follows next is pretty terrifying and fairly realistic. Every time I thought of a way for them to get back on the boat, the characters tried it; including standing on each other's shoulders, using their clothes as a rope and finding some sort of hatch. There was only one scene were a character does something really stupid, and it's sort of forgiven by a later explanation. So for the most part, you can believe them when it's said that this film is based on actual events. People do stupid things all the time, get themselves into bad situations, it's how you handle yourself afterwards that sets you apart. Most of the characters are dispatched in tragic, yet believable ways.

While the film is not a classic by any means, it's a fairly tight little thriller. The mostly unknown actors do a good job of conveying the terror that they're facing. The camera-work is inventive and the editing is good, keeping a good quick pace. I could have done without the repeated flashbacks to Amy's reason for hating the water, they stretch it out way too long, when it's fairly obvious what happens the first time around; but it's all shot in super-8, my favorite format, so I could forgive it. If you go into it not expecting a shark frenzy, are able to put yourself in the character's swimsuits, you might have a good time with Adrift.

This is a movie that obviously can't be a direct sequel, so why make one? The only interesting thing I felt was the end, which could actually be a supernatural one. Besides that and the appearance of some sharks, this one can be skipped.

If the first one was bad, this one was worse. The whole premise was stupid. Don't waste your time with this movie.

This film is about 6 of the dumbest people on the planet. Not only are they too dumb to remember to drop the ladder on their luxury yacht, they are too stupid to be able to figure out how to get back in their boat. It's absurd to a spectacular degree and it's also horribly depressing - though it's difficult to care about any of the soul-less and brainless characters enough to be affected by it.

I watched the first Open Water and kinda sympathize with the people trapped in the water, but still a little hard to believe. But this 2nd Open Water come on so stupid this movie I found myself fast forwarding to see how the stupid people finally managed to get out of the water...a bad movie that got even worst

I remember Open Water was about 2 people in the water... Is this more than 2 people in the water?
The other one was kind of suspenseful but ultimately a drag.

The idea of this film is great, becuase forgetting to let the ladder down is believable. The story was engaging throughout, and there were good elements of suspense and tension. I predicted the way in which they would get back on the boat though.

    "I am Jaques Cousteau!"

Adrift is an example of Hollywood studios cashing in on the success of a movie by tagging a completely unrelated film as its sequel. This movie boasts itself as the sequel to the 2004 film Open Water. I liked the 2004 movie, so I decided to give this a shot.

It comes as no shock that the movie was a complete disappointment and marketed as a sequel to get more money.

A group of 6 friends venture out in a yacht to the open ocean. They decide to go for a swim, but soon realise that no-one lowered the ladder and the boat is too big for anyone to climb on-board. So thus starts a stupendous drama that is unrealistic and quite laughably stupid at times.

The cast give it all they can, but it's clear that the screenwriter is what ultimately doomed the movie. There's no intensity to speak of, and instead of playing on human fears and using sharks we're given an episode of a dumb soap opera that's set out in the ocean.

I couldn't believe that no sharks turned up...even when there's lots of blood in the water! If only we lived in this alternate reality!

As a tale of survival, it's surprisingly unremarkable and uninteresting. The film loses steam extremely quickly, with the final 50 minutes becoming increasingly boring; forcing viewers to stare at their watches or just turn off the movie altogether.

For me, I just wanted to know what happened so I stuck with it. The hope of the group surviving maintained a bit of tension throughout. The direction was actually quite above average. It was well shot, directed and edited considering the very limited budget that the film was made on. But it's a shame some of that cash wasn't used to tidy up the script.

The film is incredibly stupid at times, but well made.

I like the whole shark idea, but this movie lacked them. I was disappointed about that but they still managed to keep it interesting.

Awesome movie. If you think about how they got stuck in the water its kind of stupid. They all jump out of the yacht, then they realize there's no ladder to get back up. The movie was good though. I can't believe the baby fell over. I was sad that everyone died, but at least the mother was alive to take care of her baby. I wish her husband would of survived in stead of thats other dude.

This movie really has nothing to do with the first one outside of the idea of people stranded in the water.

This movie seems to get bad ratings because its always compared to the first, coming from someone who has never seen the first, I didnt think it was all that bad at all. It was based on true-occurences, was funny at parts, and had some real excitement.
Though it does stretch out too long, for what it is. There's only so much time you can watch people float around in water, and wonder if there going to survive. But, for what they had to work with - I dont see why its getting such bad ratings.
It's worth watching and provides some intense moments to kill out a day of boredom.

Not a great film and I didnt really like the first one either!! I will say that out of the 2 the first film is better. Sadly, I had to see it through to the end, even though it was on telly, just to see how it ended! Not a great film.

They solved this problem on King of the Hill, and why the hell would you leave a baby alone onboard. I hope they get eaten.

This is so stupid - it's excellent!
I mean come on, is someone stupid enough to forget letting down the ladder before jumping off, when clearly, no one is on the yacht to let the ladder down except the baby?! Mind you, the child is only a few months old >_< So they're all stuck out in the ocean beside the ladder-less yacht. HOW RETARDED IS THAT?!
I kept sighing and having facial spasms due to how ridiculous the situation all was. However, I found this quite enertaining and unlike most films out there. Well is someone an idiot enough to make a film out of this? Apparently so. And it actually works!

My only criticism is the acting which definitely needs some polishing. And maybe how the story unfolds since everything just descends into stupidity. But then again, it's the whole beauty of this film :P

Watch immediately and laugh your life away!

Despite the idiotic characters, I really enjoyed this movie, which is odd since I have a major fear of water. It wasn't exactly the most intelligent movie, but it was fun.
