Saw this 5 years ago n got hooked on spanish cinema. It's my fave. Love the movie. wish too see Eduardo Noriega a lot more. Also loved Thesis, by the same actor/director double
A great story and I love the actor Eduardo Noriega ...I highly recommend it. I have not seen Vanilla Sky but would be interested to see the likeness and differences in the movies.
I liked the ending better than Vanilla Sky. Even with the far out plot, I found this one to much more coherent and relatable. I think the only thing Vanilla Sky has over this are visuals.
Shakespeare said something like:"Life is a dream dreamt by a fool, full of sound and fury meaning absolutely nothing".And let's not forget Calderon's "La vida es sueno/Life is a dream".Yes,nothing is new under the sun but it's important how you tell the story and Amenabar does a fine job (until a point). An interesting blend of drama, mystery, romance, thriller, sci fi, conflicts and dualities, reality, illusion and paranoia, first class acting and directing...I probably would have rated it higher if I haven't read UBIK by Philip K Dick. Therefore the end wasn't as surprising for me,I saw it coming from the moment they mentioned Life Extension. That's maybe the reason I'm not too enthusiastic about it...
PD. amo a Eduardo Noriega.
I remember liking the American version "Vanilla Sky" but after it ended, I came away from it confused. While the two films were very similar in characters and plot, the story progression in the original Spanish version felt more logical, and and the...(read more) end less forced and abrupt. Overall, the movie posed interesting questions on the subjects of choice, happiness, friendship, and second chances. I can't remember "Vanilla Sky" well enough to judge if P. Cruz did a better job the first time around, but I think both versions warrant a watch to see for yourself.
I wish I had time to watch every movie out there but since I don't I have to be picky about what I choose to watch. This one didn't make the cut because I don't think I'll like it or don't know enough about it to think I might like it.
This is the movie I believe inspired Vanilla Sky, but, though it's english dubbed, I liked it better than 'nilla. After I watched it I wanted to call everyone I knew to watch it!
How much are you capable of realizing that you're living a dream? How often are you capable of it? If you do, what decisions do you take in that dream? Why? Can you distinguish dettach easily the world of dreams from the world of reality? How can you be sure that you're not dreaming right now, and that this world you're living in at this very moment is the truest reality?
Amenabar plays with a totally original, awesome and mindblowing concept that involves human morality, the power of decision, the human condition and psyche, and the concepts of time and existencialism themselves.
This Spanish sample of a modern masterpiece in cinema plays with very important thematic elements of life, and poses more questions to the viewer (inviting them to reflection) than answering them. This brilliant gem is the one you definitely need to see before the FAR WAY INFERIOR Vanilla Sky (2001), or it will ruin the magic of Amenabar's original work and vision. Free your mind a little bit and expect something beyond your preconceptions of life and existence. BRILLIANT.
Not too bad. I was expecting something completely different based on what I read, but I still liked it.
"Abre los Ojos" has a lot of twists that could've made for a kick-ass mind****, and often, it had some new concepts (Treading on some old ones), but it's the ending that saves it. And Penelope Cruz.... 'nuff said.
Abre los Ojos has an interesting story with a few twist and great performance by Eduardo Noriega and Penelope Cruz. The direction and the music by Anemabar is excellent. A worth of watch.
After a handsome playboy suffers a disfiguring accident, he finds it increasingly difficult to distibguish reality from his nightmares. Well-scripted mindbender has emotional depth and carries the viewer along to a conclusion that successfully ties up loose ends. In Spanish with subtitles.
I'm glad that it's been several years since I saw Vanilla Sky (the American remake), and that it wasn't especially memorable, because having forgotten most of the plot I could enjoy the original without having to compare them (as such I won't compare them in this review, either). The beauty of this film is that, along with the excellent script, it's made exceptionally well in that: although certain points of the plot do get somewhat complicated, the director never allows the details to overpower the essence of the story, or to convolute the beauty of what is on screen. Indeed, though there is science involved and it's somewhat of a mystery film, it remains very ethereal and exists on a higher plane than the typical thriller/mystery fare. The film stars Eduardo Noriega as a very dashing, wealthy man who, after finding the love of his love (in the form of Penelope Cruz, who played the same role in the remake), is involved in a car crash and has his face, which for him is his livelihood, largely destroyed. The film raises a ton of questions in its running, but has the good sense to answer them to some degree, but also to leave the film very much up to interpretation. Such ambiguousness really permeates the entire film and gives it an existential twinge. As I said, the film is often exquisitely beautiful, and the soundtrack matches its aesthetic very well. The acting from both leads (and several of the supporting actors) is top-notch, though I had the same problem I've had with every film starring Penelope Cruz: she's just so damned beautiful I'm often in danger of being distracted from the rest of the film completely! My own fault, though. So this is a great film, and since I can barely remember anything about Vanilla Sky, I think it's pretty safe to say the original is very much superior.
Um...there's penelope cruz nudie scene! That's worth something! Other than that...this is worse than the remake, Vanilla Sky, which REALLY says something. Two stars for each of Penelope's boobays shown.
It has got an exciting, and original, story for sure. Wasn't too much a fan of the "scifi" twist at the end, but Alejandro Amenabar deserves credit both for the writing and direction that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats, and constantly guessing. Eduardo Noriega is good in handling his complex role, but there is a sense of 'good-boy' feel about him that prevented me from entirely feeling the dark sides of his character. Penelope Cruz looks gorgeous! All in all, a good thriller to capture your attention.
