This film is a masterpiece! You have to see this one by Dario Argento, I mean this ones great from all aspects. From the acting to the direction, to the amazing plot and plot twists, to the great atmosphere, this defently one not to miss. It starts off with a woman whos an opera singer and is doing a rehersal at the theatre. Upset with the direction, she bolts out of the theater and runs outside only to be hit by a car. Since shes the main star of the opera, they look towards a replacement, a young girl named Betty who almost doesn't take the role due to believing that doing Macbeth brings bad luck, but she goes along with it anyways. During her first performance, we see from the point of view of a man with binculors looking at the replacement during her performance. A security catches the man up in the box and tells him that hes not supposed to be up here, and the mystery man knocks off a lighing unit sending it too the ground with the entire crowd noticing and whle the crowd is busy looking at the fallin lights beside them, the mystery man up in the box then kills the security man envolving a coat hook. After the performance a policeman comes to investigate and lets Betty know what happened. Later on, that night, Betty wakes up with her boyfriend at the theatre. The boyfriend leaves to get something and out of the darkness a man with black gloves, a white trench coat, and a black mask covers her mouth with tape, ties her hands, ties her body to a pillar, and puts a set of six metal pins under each eye lid so she can't close her eyes or they stab her in the top of the eyes and also so she has to witness the brutal murder of her boyfriend without missing anything. The murderer cuts her hand ropes and leaves while Betty unties herself. I don't want to give anything else away but this movie is suspenseful and amazing. Its also really creative, but in a different way than Suspiria was. The way they find the killer is awesome as well. Overall ,a great movie that is well told and well shown. Don't miss this at all! This is now the 65th movie going on my favorite movies of all time list being the 65th movie that I gave a perfect rating and actually this is the first movie by Dario Argento. Yes thats right, I said it, Suspiria has been de-throned as the best Argento film and being replaced with Opera. Not saying that Suspiria wasn't good, Suspiria was awesome with the best lighting in cinema history in my opinion as well as one of the best horror scores ever, but Opera's plot, acting, and everything else was better in this movie, expecialy the plot making this a high recommendation from me expecially for the fact that most Dario Argento fans have missed this one. " The Ravens always remember", and I will more than remember this movie. Some of the angles in this movie like the slo mo bullet scene and others make it a movie with some of the most memberable angles of all time. SEE THIS ONE NOW! YOU WONT BELIEVE THE TWISTS!
Dario Argento beginning to slip a bit, but this is still gripping Grand Guignolish stuff in which a psychotic killer (who appears to be normal, of course) stalks and disposes of victims in various gruesome ways. As usual, the parts are greater than the whole, with the plot vaguely piling absurdity upon absurdity, but one hardly cares. Interestingly, at the very end, the director of the opera seems to be filming Argento's Phenomena, but gets killed before he can finish it. A pity. The staging of MacBeth seems to reflect Argento's own operatic stagings, which one is glad to have missed. However, the singing (by Callas and others) is just fine, even if interrupted by death metal at climactic moments. Happy ending? I'm not so sure.
Suspiria with 100% more Sabastian Bach. Had one of the best kill scenes ever, where a guy tried blocking a knife with his hands, making him the smartest person in any horror movie ever. Watch some of Argento's other stuff first.
Worth seeing for the slow mo bullet through the eye shot alone.
Overall very effective and enjoyable., but marred by a ridiculous ending. The acting and story are also a little shoddy at times, but that's par for the course in this sub genre.
Argento's moving camera in this film is stunning. Easily on par with Scorcese & Ballhau's and Coen & Levinson's work.
As usual with Argento, the plot is pointless, but also as usual with him there are some very creative camera angles and killing scenes.
quite surprised with this film. i thought it would be a bit shit but i really liked it. alot of gore and suspense and classic Dario Argento stuff.
Based on the classic story the Phantom Of The Opera, Argento's version contains some memorable set-pieces and his trademark stunning visuals and imagery.
Another great visual masterpiece of blood and terror from Dario F'N Argento. I would guarentee that the people that created the SAW franchise have seen this movie and took notes.
My favorite Argento film. Some truely memorable (horror) movie moments and a not too shaby story line.
While containing some interesting horror concepts, the plot of "Opera" is lackluster at best. It contains few of the striking visuals of Argento's previous work and much of the suspense in the film ends before it can fully impact the audience.
i'm not sure about the end and the narrative track, but everything else was great. the music was well used and there are many great scenes, especially the ones with the birds.
Not as good as I was expecting. It has some flaws but is still good. The best of this movie is the great camerawork and lighting.
The awful metal score, and the pathethic extra ending stops this film from reaching its true potential.
This movie was much better than I thought it would be. Dario Argento did an excellent job with this film with the exception of the rock & roll parts of the soundtrack which seemed out of place.
I will admit that I like Suspiria more, but this film is a little more fascinating to watch. The pov of the ravens and the way we are held back from knowing anything and the great rock'n'roll music, it's not as creative as his other films, but the shots are some of the best he has done.
Top notch Argento. Beautiful cinematography. Rich with stunning shots, making use of Argento's signature subjective camera angle. The plot is better than most Argento, which is good. The only real problem I have is the ending. The ending is ridiculous. The dubbing into English isn't great, the acting isn't great, and the soundtrack is bizarre. Fortunately the visual elements are so stunning that all problems are easy to ignore.
This was probably one of the better movies i've seen by Argento. It looked great and even though it was a little slow at points it was still very interesting. I enjoyed the soundtrack aside from that damn 80's metal song that kept playing, it was kinda distracting.
Until Argento made the recent Sleepless, Opera was at last a return to form - unknown psycho on the loose terrorises the young lead of a production of Macbeth by killing those around her and forcing her to watch by taping needles under her eyelids. Some bloodthirsty Argento killings are themselves operatic particularly the bullet through the door spyhole. Highly recommended!
This board looks lonely. Be the first to talk about "Opera" !
