Operation Homecoming is a unique documentary that explores the firsthand accounts of American troops through their own words. The film is built upon a project created by the National Endowment for the...( read more  read more... ) Arts to gather the writing of soldiers and their families who have participated in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Through interviews and dramatic readings by such actors as Robert Duvall, Josh Lucas, Beau Bridges, Blair Underwood, Justin Kirk, Aaron Eckhart, Chris Gorham and John Krasinski, the film transforms selections from this collection of writing into a deep examination of the experiences of the men and women who are serving in America’s armed forces. At the same time it provides depth and context to these experiences through a broader look at the universal themes of war literature.

Knowing that the experiences w...( read more)ere all from real people in their own words the best way they could explain how they felt just made it seem so much more like a real thing than the sometimes over-glorified portrayal Hollywood bestows upon even the most honest documentaries. This film wasn't edge-of-your-seat entertaining, but it really put a lot of the psychological aspects of war into perspective for me, someone who has never and probably will never experience anything involving fighting and artillery. I actually really appreciate all the work these soldiers do and the orders they have to accept that can sometimes contradict their own beliefs. This film really humanized the soldiers that some people think of mindless robots. I respect this movie a lot for bringing this to the public.

A documentary about the writings of soldiers during war. The stories are well written and the accompanying visuals are as equally interesting. One of the better Iraq docs of late because it has a more artistic feel.
