  • November 26, 2009
Nothing more than just your average low-brain comedy, that is as visual stunning, as it is visual painfull!
  • November 24, 2009
    Ha quite a funny film.
  • November 24, 2009
Some good funny stuff. Light-hearted movie that didn't try too hard. As usual, Jack Black never fails to make me laugh. Overall, a 3 and a half out of five for me.

If you're a Jack Black freak like me, I'm sure you've already seen this. But, If you're not and you haven't, listen up. The screenplay was written by Mike White, the twisted genius who also brought us School of Rock, The Good Girl and Nacho Libre (nobody's perfect). And, believe ...( read more)it or not, Orange County actually out-performs SOR on the guffaw meter. Colin Hanks (son of Tom) is perfect as Shaun Brumder, the poor schlub who gets screwed out of attending Stanford, when the school Guidance Counselor (Lily Tomlin) accidentally sends in the wrong transcript. He spends the rest of the movie trying to correct the mistake, so he can study under his favourite writer Marcus Skinner (Kevin Kline). Of course, the more he tries, the worse things get, since he has his stoner brother Lance (the aforementioned Mr. Black) ostensibly 'helping' him. Also along for the screamingly funny ride is Schuyler Fisk (daughter of Sissy Spacek), as Shaun's girlfriend Ashley, Catherine O'Hara as his loopy alcoholic mother, and John Lithgow as his work-obsessed father. Chevy Chase is hilarious in a brief cameo as the school principal, as is Mike White himself, as the English teacher with Shakespeare issues. The direction by Jake Kasdan (son of Lawrence) is smashingly good, and the soundtrack is used to perfectly enhance the craziness. Check out the scene where the cheerleaders are practicing to 'Butterfly' by Crazy Town, and you'll see what I mean. Beautiful, man. I almost forgot to give props to Kyle Howard and R.J. Knoll as Shaun's surfer dude buddies, who are absolutely priceless. And pay very close attention to the wonderful performance of the dog (uncredited) who plays the poor, homeless 'puppy' that Ashley rescues from certain death on the PCH. Pure, comedic genius. Actually that statement can be applied to the whole film. An unqualified triumph for White, Black and everyone in between. I'm not kidding, "this is the real story, dude".

Thought it was pretty awesome. Best movie Ive seen Junior Hanks in and a role made perfectly for Jack Black. Pretty decent cast, with a lot of familiar faces. Great story and some good humour to go with it. Kick ass soundtrack as well.

A good film with some good laughs but ultimately I was a little disappointed as I'd been told it was the greatest film ever and it isn't.

Surprisingly good coming-of-age film. It really makes you miss that brief period in the early 2000s when nothing was going on.
  • July 12, 2009
    interesting story line but lacking
  • July 10, 2009
Colin Hanks sucks, sucks, sucks, sucks, sucks... Jack Black is the only good thing about this movie. Which isn't saying much, it still blows.

Ah, the joys and trials of families and friends so dysfunctional that only they can love eachother - believe me I know first hand about both ;P
Rad performances from the mom in home alone (as the mom); the hilarious, insane, and chronically underappreciated John Lithgow (as the ...( read more)dad); Tom Hanks' son (as the lead character and aspiring writer); and Jack Black (as the reprostonerbate brother).
Awesomely awesome storyline, which gave me hope that there really is meaning and reason in suffering, no matter how difficult it is to see it at the time, and that everything really does happen for a reason - "You can't always get what you want, but if you try some times, you just might find, you get what you need"

Colin Hanks is severly underrated as an actor. Love how he's fighting his roots against his dream career. Great soundtrack too!

    this sounds oober good~!~!~LOL
  • May 28, 2009
Nothing entirely special here but it's got the offspring of Tom Hanks as the lead role which was exciting. Also Jack Black always plays a good stoner/bum. Looks like Tom Hanks' baby isn't starting out in wild comedies like "Bosom Buddies" or "Bachelor Party" in the footsteps of...( read more) Mr. Hanks. This film is a simple MTV produced comedy with a pretty good script and casting.

  • March 1, 2009
Much more enjoyable than I expected, the first half was pretty good but it eventually sort of unravelled. It tells a story that's easily related to though, and the characters are all interesting. A decent script scores this film more points than its formulaic filming, and while I...( read more) don't need to see it again, I don't regret watching it either.
