An incredible film about faith. While similar thematically to The Passion of Joan of Arc, Ordet offers a much broader and deeper scope than Dreyer's earlier masterpiece. In a rural and very religious town in the 1920's, the Borgens is a simple family of peasants. The proud pat...( read more)riarch of the family Morten Borgen lives with his three sons. The eldest son, Mikkel, is an agnostic whose wife Inger is pregnant. The 2nd son Johannes has gone mad from his relgious studies and now believes that he is Jesus. The youngest son Anders is in love with the daughter of a Christian fundamentalist who refuses to offer his daughter to Anders due to his disagreements with Morten on their approach to faith. Tragedy ensues as Inger dies from complication of giving birth, leading to an unforgettable ending. Dreyer pits the concept of religion against the concept of faith and spirituality. True faith as it turns out is in conflict with the beliefs of even the most religious people.

Ordet is a film, based on a 1925 play, about the power of faith when all else fails. It's about a Danish family on a farm, their clashes in faith with another sect in their own, and what happens when a family member falls ill during childbirth. Being a person completely lacking ...( read more)in faith myself, I took in this film with a sort of outsider's perspective. Be that as it may, I found it to be deeply moving and genuine, and though it's steeped in theological discussion and crises, it doesn't get too heavy handed, nor does it talk down to the viewer. It's an allegorical story about each person coming to terms with their own faith, which is filmed (beautifully) just like a stage-play for the most part, and well acted and adapted. Definite must-see.

Could very well be the saddest movie I've ever seen, but at the same time uplifting. Like most Karl Dreyer films it takes a while to get to the point, but the trip is so worth it. A good lesson about pre-judging people's behavior.

The ending is so bad it's almost comical, but the film up to that point is stunningly well-made and just dowright beautiful. It's also quite sad. I think you could probably press the stop button about five minutes before the end and be much more satisfied.

It's hard to speak about this film. Its power is humbling. Dreyer doesn't waste any time and what he has to say is as profound as any film artist gets. It's deeply spiritual and starkly breathtaking. I feel as if I'm just beginning to skim the surface of this riveting, thought-pr...( read more)ovoking and enigmatic masterpiece. If you have the patience it may very well move you beyond expression.

    C. T. Dreyer used to say that he wanted to produce a movie about Jesus Christ. According to me Ordet is this kind of movie. Ordet is a masterpiece for the way the subject of the movie is developed, and also for the way Dreyer uses his camera and the lights. Some picture of this m...( read more)ovie are just like Rembrant's paintings.
