Quality manga showcasing some gorgeous artwork whereby nature has taken back the world and man lives in the crumbling remnants of cities, having developed an equilibirum with the forests... that is until a girl from the past is awoken with the potential to undo everything. Aside ...( read more)from the exquisitely detailed animation, there is also a good story here and plenty of action. Recommended.

A breathless anime that keeps moving and looks great! Made by Gonzo as part of their 25th anniversary specials, this one is about a future that is in time with nature, but a ruthless society wants to get all the technology back and revert to how things use to be. Guided by Agaito...( read more), a girl recently awoken from cryogenic sleep comes furth to help stop them. Fun and action-packed, with a great score.

Mediocre (but well-dubbed) Japanese animation that prides itself in epic visuals and a good soundtrack, but that lacks in any form of decent plot or general depth. Maybe worth seeing if you have a projector and fancy something superficial and easy on the eyes, but I wouldn't both...( read more)er with it again...

"Origin" is a pedestrian, CGI-filled version of Miyazaki's Nausicaa without any of the magic. It is about a little girl who wakes up several centuries into the future, when the world is divided between three factions: "The Forest", which controls the water supply; the Neutral Cit...( read more)y, which is at peace with the Forest but dependent on it for water; and a militaristic city that uses heavily polluting industrial processes to extract its own water independent of the Forest. Of course, the girl will disrupt the balance between these three societies, as the boy she falls in love with turns into an "augmented" being with Superman-like powers...

I never felt any interest in what was going on onscreen and slept through the second half, which I then watched in fast forward to get an idea of where the whole thing was going, but I really didn't care. I much preferred "Brave Story", which Gonzo produced the same year, and the TV series "Last Exile", which they produced in 2003.

Transparent ending, predictable, but all in all very entertaining. Great philosophy, too.
