  There are films that are bad because the people who made them just didn't have the talent, the money or the intelligence to make them any better, however hard they tried. Such films you can always appreciate at some level for their good intentions. Others are bad because none of ...( read more)the persons involved in their making cared a jot about what they were doing or what the final product would look like, as long as they got their paycheck. "Outlaw of Gor" belongs to the latter category. Even with the MST3K commentary you can still feel how much contempt the guys at Cannon had for you, the audience.
  
  The only good thing about this film is the love theme, but if you're a Pino Donaggio fan like me, you will have recognised the "Ruby Dawn" theme from that other (slightly less) crappy movie, "Barbarians". In fact, the film opens in a bar with the atrocious disco rendering of that theme which closed the movie, and I thought it was quite fun for a lousy swords and sandal film to make a reference to one of its predecessors. But then I realised the whole music was ripped off from "Barbarians", although there is no mention of a composer in either the opening or end credits (Donaggio probably preferred to remain anonymous.) And that's only one of the ways in which the film saved money. Another one was by considering the first shot was always good enough to be kept. So don't ask for bloopers in the Special DVD Edition. When you've seen the film, you've seen them all.
  
  It's a tribute to Jack Palance that he survived this film to make another twenty more. But John "Bud" Cardos only directed two more movies and vanished forever, while Donna Denton (as her leggyness "Queen Lara") was never seen again on the big screen and Rebecca Ferratti went on to make a career in the soft porn industry. Even the stunt coordinator only got to make two more films and was never heard of again. As for the art director (art? ART?) and the cinematographer, that was also their last film. Whoever said the free market was unfair? I wish the police had half as much success catching criminals.
  
  I read some of John Norman's "Gor" volumes in my teens, and based on what I remember of them (they were a kind of BDSM variant of "Masters of the Universe") I can say that it must have been quite a challenge to make a movie version that cheapened them. But they did. This film is currently the 16th worst film in IMDb's database, with a 1.6/10, which means it's even worse than "Laserblast". (I can't believe I got it listed on Flixster. I hope this will not be held against me on Judgment Day. My idea of a joke was to have April 1 as its release date, since I think it was never shown in the theaters and went directly to video.)
  
  My favorite line from the MST3K commentary was: "Umberto Barberini. That's Italian for Adrienne Barbeau!"
  
  Oh, and iron age cultures do not have hair-driers and hair-sprays. Those came later.
