Oxen (The Ox)
Sven Nykvist, Ingmar Bergman's cinematographer, uses his knowledge of ambiance to create and sustain mood in this simple tale. Based on a true incident, this is the story of a tenant farmer who slaughters his landlord's ox to feed his family during the 1860 famine in rural Sweden. Quickly suspect because of his obvious feelings of guilt, the man is sent to jail for six years. When he returns he discovers that his wife has survived without him by doing things that he cannot forgive.
