With all hormone and surgical enhancements banned from the competition, contestants rely entirely on tricks of makeup and wardrobe, graded on their ingenuity as well as beauty. Following the individual experiences of five top contenders, the film examines the work that goes into striving for the title, as well as the motivations that drive each pageantee. ~ Cammila Collar, Rovi

Critic Reviews
-
Martin Tsai, Village Voice
Pageant sorely misses the socioeconomic context of Paris Is Burning, which took seven years to complete. When one of the film's subjects indeed becomes Miss Gay America 2009, Davis and Halpern-Fingerhut's camera has long since stopped rolling.

Nathan Lee, New York Times
This classicism is not without its charm, and it's touching, in a goofy sort of way, to see how seriously everyone takes it.
-
Fr. Chris Carpenter, Movie Dearest
Inspiring...Even if one isn't a fan of drag, "Pageant" is definitely worth a view.
-
Avi Offer, NYC Movie Guru
A diverting and uplifting experience.
