Another great western starring and directed by Clint Eastwood. A preacher comes to the aid of a small town where the locals are hoping to strike gold. One of the better westerns around with a great shoot-out finale.

Well, it is a western. Clint Eastwood is his regular badass self. The story is as always good vs evil. What else can we wish for?

Not one of Mr. Eastwood's best westerns but still very watchable. Certain elements of the plot owe a great deal to the superior High Plains Drifter.

A triumphant remake of the classic "Shane". If anyone could do it, Clint Eastwood could, and he did it supremely well.

With a better cast and some more work on the end sequence, this could have been much better.
Carrie Snodgress makes Richard Keil look like a top class actor.

A classy western about a mysterious preacher who protects a humble prospector village from a greedy mining company trying to encroach on their land. Clint Eastwood is great in this!

I gave this movie a little extra rating due to the fact that I really like the character Eastwood plays in the flick even though we know very little about him.
It's a very basic western story with a group trying to defend their land from the rich people who want it. Eastwood comes in and helps them keep what is theirs.
One of the things that makes this a little different is that much of the story is left out. There are hints that there is more to what we are seeing but the movie isn't here to tell that story. It focuses on the task at hand.
Normally I wouldn't care for that but it works here and I think it makes for a good watch.
Eastwood directs well and he should seeing how many westerns he has made over the years. He is one of the great film actors and directors of his time and I don't see him slowing up anytime soon.

Classic tale of good verses evil and a guardian angel of death ? Character development reminds me of 3:10 to Yuma.

I personally feel that this is one of Clint Eastwood?s greatest performances. The story line is great and the mystery about Eastwood?s character is hugely intriguing and is guaranteed to keep you fix to your seats.

As usual Eastwood plays the quiet and mysterious stranger, this time he comes to the aid of a group of gold prospectors who are being threatened to abandon their claim. Although at a slower place than his more famous Westerns, this is still an enjoyable film and Eastwood gets to do what he does best.

A satisfying Western starring one of the greatest western stars of all time, Clint Eastwood. It is so good how Eastwood can turn such a straight forward plot and make the viewers feel involved with the overall outcome. Eastwood kicks ass like always and you root for him up until the very end. There are some better western films besides this and most of them involved Eastwood as well (Unforgiven, Good, Bad and the Ugly) but this was also one of Clint's good films. Overall, a solid film with the king of Westerns at the helm and as the lead, you cant go wrong.

Somewhat slow at parts, but it also has some very good scenes mixed in there. Clint Eastwood is great as usual. And a young Chris Penn does a good job as well. Not Clint Eastwood's best western, but still a descent flick.

Not the best one for Clint, but it is alright. It is still the formula of the guy who rides in town, nameless, and rights the wrongs. I guess I just like other films of Eastwood better.

Clint rocks as an actor and is a very good director...this wonderful mystic western sits nicely between High Plains drifter and the Dollars trilogy on your DVD shelves

Eastwood as usual in his stoic, somber role as the somewhat reluctant hero, once again saves the day..

A very good western this time directed by the man himself. I'm a sucker for all of Eastwood's westerns.

The "Trench Coat Bounty Hunters" were pretty cool but obviously not enough to handle Eastwood. Could've had a better (prettier) lead actress though.

Great movie. Eastwood hadnt done a western for a long time until he made this one. It definitly harkens back to his old westerns.

One of my favorite Eastwood movies. It is so full of satire, and real life situations of the old west.

A decent western. Eastwood is his usually badass self. Some of the acting felt a little forced and parts of the movie dragged but it was still pretty good and an enjoyable movie. I'd give it a 7.5/10.

Similar to High Plains Drifter in the fact that you're not quite sure who, or what, The Stranger might be, or where he's from. No matter...he's here to make a point and you'd better be paying attention when he speaks. Excellent ensemble cast, too!
