For a movie about the apocalypse, Panic in Year Zero came across as claustrophobic. It's reasonably groundbreaking for its time on a gruesomeness level with a rape scene and by actually showing dead bodies. This movie reminded me of a modern zombie movie without the zombies. Alth...( read more)ough nothing truly stands out as far as acting or direction's concerned and everything seems to inexplicably get wrapped up conveniently, Panic in Year Zero isn't a bad watch. The worst thing about this movie is undoubtedly Les Baxter's Mancini-esque score that couldn't be more distracting or inappropriate if it was performed entirely with kazoos. If nothing else it made me anticipate the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" all the more.

The Grapes of Wrath meets Xenophon's Persian Expedition, with healthy amounts of Cold-War propaganda mixed in, and diluted down into a campy 1950's morality tale about what it means to be civilized.

You have your characteristic no-good greasers, a young woman in need of rescuing...( read more), a nagging and worrysome housewife, and a father who knows best.

When their afternoon fishing trip is interrupted by a small-scale nuclear war which drives the populace into barbarism and cruelty, they begin resorting to equally brutal tactics to defend themselves.

While tension and fear are prime motivators, the actual expression of that tension is lacking. The films script and acting admirably give life to a truly catastrophic event, but the surroundings never seem as threatening as everyone lets on: the only truly despicable characters are a recurring band of outrageously villainous teenage hoodlums, and a few price-gouging storeclerks.

In the end, it is the family themselves who interact with the world in panicked and barbaric ways... and this is where the film shines.

A promising film that ends up being dragged down by silly 1950's value judgments and stereotypes, and a poorly budgeted and fleshed-out setting.

Have to give this one 4 1/2 stars, its a great survival movie. And they snuck Frankie Avalon in there on me. And with actors with the first name of Rex, Willis, O.Z., How can a movie be that bad. This movie came out right around the time of the Cuban Missile crisis, and I am su...( read more)re it frighten a few people. Its a good film with lessons learned for today as you never know with the way things are in the world, survival may become our lifestyle soon. I got this on a MGM Double feature for $6.95, worth every penny. And I would add it to any collection.

This was really pretty good for an old '62 black and white about a family who does what they have to do to survive after a nuclear bombing in the U.S. It was interesting enough to keep my attention and was pretty good except for some of the musical score which didn't seem to fit...( read more). It was weird seeing Frankie Avalon in something other than a beach movie :) I remember when I was a kid it was a big talked about deal to have a bomb shelter, my Aunt and Uncle had one.....everyone thought the big bomb would drop at any minute.

A family during his week-end trip has to face an 'extreme' situation: there's the beginning of nuclear bombing ! Society and Order are collapsing. Other humans (young teddy boys are a main danger ,for sure) they are a continous obstacle in the race for survival of the Family. ...( read more)
Good, moral, peaceful father (R.Milland) realizes very quicky there are no other ways to survive, he's breaking his moral barriers as well: it's the jungle's law! Many high tension scenes and an excellent 50s vs 60s mood for a very nice movie.

Nuclear war causes society's morals to disentegrate quickly. It's a post apocolyptic world in "year zero" when everyone is still supposed to be civilized. Lots of looting and raping. Fathers teaching their sons to use guns to their advantage - gas stations raising their prices...( read more) to $3 a gallon. Regular folk turning on their neighbors. Hooligans kidnapping girls for their sex slaves. And Frankie Avalon in the middle of all of it. It was really interesting to see 1962's take on moral disentegration. But the film is primed to run through MST3K's grinder.

Aside from the Lex Baxter score, Panic in Year Zero is top notch. Watching this it was a bit of a shocker seeing the adult themes it presented. It was a shocker because your not used to seeing this type of 1962 fare with rape in it. And thats were the score fails. Lex Baxter uses...( read more) this jazzy swing type music over what is really intence scenes. The musics cool, its just doesnt fit, and it takes away the impact of the scene.
But the script is intelligent. I was suprised by how true the situatons would probably really play out. This isnt low grade b movie cheez here. Its a damn fine film with a ultra cool story. I love post apocalyptic films and this one is tops.

    Actually this movie wasn't bad.
  • December 13, 2007
Wow gas is all the way up to $2.75 a gallon! Those poor bastards.

"Panic" is a great post-apocalyptic paranoid nuclear fantasy. You can't beat a nuclear war flick that's got Frankie Avalon in it! It's actually a pretty tense story, or at least it would be if they didn't daddy-o beach party music playing during all the action sequences. Were ...( read more)it not for the music, this would be a pretty solid B-movie drama, but it's hard to take things too seriously when you're waiting for Frankie and Ray to drop their rifles and start doing the Watusi.
