Another Kim Ki-duk film, another slap on the back from me. Again he takes complex relations and conflicting emotions and sets them up in an arena of great simplicity. It only goes to fully enhance the strengths, mainly being the performances and directing. A tad more dialogue tha...( read more)n is usual from a Ki-duk film also helps for a more accessible piece. It's like another piece of chilled out poetry, completely absorbing without being brash and loud.

    THE BIRDCAGE INN (1998)
    directed by Ki-Duk Kim
    starring Ji-eun Lee, Hae-eun Lee, Jae-mo Ahn

In Korea, a young woman is hired by a family to clean a small hotel but also to act as «the girl» whenever male clients require some fun
    ...( read more).

Birdcage Inn is Ki-Duk Kim's third film and yet another one with a small budget. He didnt have all the accessories required to make his film work as he wanted. I get where he is going but it simply doesnt work, but I forgive him cause he later made a film sort of similar, Samaria, and that one worked.

We dont know where the girl is from, all we know is everyone is taking advantage of her, even her brother - or ex-husband, I saw a badly subtitled version with some sentence making no sense - wether its her boos, the boss's son, the guy at the beach, the clients, everyone wants to fuck her and even further than that, its pretty much rape. She is a very tortured character and, usually in films when you have that sorta characters, they fight back, but here she never does except for one badly rendered scene. Its annoying cause there is no point in making her go through all of that and stay the nice little girl who never asks for anything.

Ki-Duk Kim once again shows a bit of his lvoe for the arts but not as much as in his previous film, Wild Animals, and thats when he bagan with his attempt on beautiful poetic shots.

Birdcage Inn isnt a bad film, but its not a great one. It has a point but never reach it. I wont say its dissapointing cause I did expect lower quality from an earlier Ki-Duk Kim film. Again, it is always interesting to witness how another culture works and maybe everything that annoyed me with the film comes from my lack of knowledge about how people really live over there, but I dont think so.
