Note: Making a low-budget horror with cheap special effects nowadays is like wanting to make a porn with a interesting story and characters. From the first moment, it is destined to failure. No different it looks when it comes to "Parasomnia", which, from looking at its concept, ...( read more)had some potential to be fairly entertaining.

No special effects are better than cheap ones, everyone should know it by now.

OMG....If you can picture a Friday afternoon TV movie mixed with a really weird sex pests dream you have something resembling this rubbish. One minute this lassie (Wilson) cant stay awake the next she is knifing cops dressed as a bloody cheerleader and getting her bussoms out at ...( read more)the drop of a hat. The only saving grace is Kilpatrick who puts in quite a good performance as the baddy with the ability to make people do whatever he wishes. I was wracking my brain to try and remember where I had saw the detective in this one played by Combs. It was only as I was typing it I remembered he played the mad scientist in Re-animator and some weird alien in one of the Star Trek spin offs......absolutely silly and the ending was just ....well daft.

Parasomnia is a condition where the sufferer spends almost all their time asleep, with only brief periods of waking, and with no knowing when, or for how long, they will be awake.

Danny is a young, geeky guy visiting his friend in rehab. His friend tells him about the serial ki...( read more)ller (Volpe) who is kept in isolation on the psychiatric ward because of his ability to control other people into committing crimes for him. Danny can't help going for a look but is more interested in the pretty, young parasomniac girl called Laura, in the next room. He becomes obsessed with her and her condition and keeps visiting her and she starts to wake more often when he is there. On learning that she is about to be transferred to another hospital, he kidnaps/rescues her and takes her home.

Things seem to be going quite well until he wakes up to find her covered in blood, leaning over him, about to plunge a kitchen knife into his chest. That's his first clue that he might have bitten off more than he can chew.

It soon becomes apparent that Volpe is able to control Laura's mind from inside his cell and he is not happy about someone else having an interest in what he sees as his girlfriend. Danny is trying to cover up for Laura but the Police now think he is killing the people who keep turning up dead because they don't believe Volpe can be behind it. He decides that the only way to free Laura is to kill Volpe but only succeeds in helping him escape. This leaves him on the run from the Police, and from Volpe, while trying to stop Laura killing anyone else.

It sounds confusing and sometimes it is. There are surrealist dream sequences and flashbacks which you don't know have been flashbacks until later on. This also has one of the weirdest (but strangely cool) sequences involving the overture from Romeo and Juliet, played by blindfolded musicians in Victorian costume, some automatons and a girl with wings sewn on. It's almost like a Boschian nightmare and it's total arty-farty nonsense, but I did like it nonetheless.

The main problem this film has is that it's not really a horror, although it's meant to be. It tries hard with some blood and gore and a couple of brief shots of boobs but it's just never scary or creepy enough. Surreally weird, well acted and well made but not scary in the slightest.

I would recommend it as a psychological thriller but if you are looking for real scares then you might want to give it a miss.

This has official become my #1 favorite horror movie as of right now. If you can get pass the cheesey acting you'll see a really beautiful horror movie inside it. Also pay close attention to the story. You might miss something. I highly recommend it!
